Sony Santa Monica outline reasons for sticking to God of War franchise

Sony’s God of War team say it still has more story to tell when discussing why the team have never moved away from the franchise.

Improving the systems further from God of War 3, which was tools and engine focused in development, as well as the addition of the multiplayer, essentially a different game and not without its challenges, add to the reasons for staying with the title.

Shacknews has further comments from Studio Director Shannon Studstill, who manages to dodge any comments on Orbis, maintaining PS3′s power still surprises.

I really hope to see an Action-RPG game from Santa Monica.
but it seems it’s not going to happen any time soon.

I’m probably not the first person to think this, but why doesn’t Sony Santa Monica or some offshoot of that studio release a game about Jason and the argonauts. It could have the god of war violence and built in multiplayer with the argonauts.

I think they should go do a series based on Norse mythology.

New hero, new combat mechanics (they’ve been doing the dual chain thing for a good long while now), new story.

Move to Norse Mythology already! Make Kratos the Bad Guy!

@3: Ups, guess i’m slow. But really, Norse Mythology should be next. There’s so much material they could work with. So many creatures to design, so many different weapons and environments, so many stories to tell and so many gods to kill.

This is the difference between Santa Monica and Naughty Dog.

Maybe someday God of War 13-2 will be coming.

I really enjoyed the franchise, but I agree completely with @3, we need a new mithology, a new hero, new story with the essence that made god of war great. And enough with prequels, come on.

Seems to me like half this story is missing.

Lost in formatting, Naren?

Which half? Not much else was revealed.

There seems to be a weird disconnect between the first paragraph and the second, like there was more to be told between them. Maybe I’m just reading it funny. =P

You’re right, unfortunately they didn’t delve into more of what story to they will tell. Sorry about that, it should have transitioned better.

@10 Not your fault at all. Keep up the good work!

They really need to bring the series up to date.

Fixed cameras and QTE’s reek of lazy game design. It’s faceroll gaming.

And the sex mini-games? Really? In 2012 (outside of Japan) this is just laughable.

How they get away producing such shallow misogynistic garbage I don’t know.

@12 That’s because gamers without a critic sense appreciate it, when god of war 1 was realeased if you didn’t had one you were stupid among your friends. Thinking of it now, they all grew up and are these people “filled with swag, videogames are for losers”…

But, I’m still going to buy this game, and god of war saga, oh the irony…

I will love the idea of the nordic mithology or any other mightologies out there for that matter, but i do believe there is a lot of the greek mythology that was not cover, therefore i dont mind if they stick to greek, i just hope the spice things up changing/evolving the gameplay, i really dont mind god of war 13, if they do them one different from the other, it is time they make something new with this game, and story will not be enough IMHO.

The original GoW was a technical showcase, and quite innovative at the time, so I can see where the acclaim stems from.

The same static backdrops, limited play area, tits and tired gameplay just don’t cut it anymore. The series is becoming a parody of itself.

@14: Fuck that. I for one am completely sick of Greek Mythology. We’ve seen all the monsters, the important stories have been told already and frankly Kratos as a character is just not that interesting.
