Japanese PlayStation Awards demonstrate gloomy sales year

Sony Japan’s annual PlayStation Awards failed to produce a Platinum winner this year, as no PlayStation format games managed to shift the required 1 million units over a calendar year.

The awards are a double-barrelled affair, congratulating games on official shipment figures and presenting user’s choice awards voted on by players.

Five PlayStation 3 games received a Gold prize this year, which goes to games which have shipped over 500,000 units, but there were no Platinum (1 million) or Double Platinum (2 million) entries.

Depressingly, the Vita didn’t front a single Gold award, with Sony introducing a special category for the top five shipped games. A similar category exists for downloaded games.

In the user’s choice categories, Japanese gamers had no trouble choosing ten Japanese games to be honoured, with a good mix of genres and both current platforms represented. Sadly, only three international titles got a look in, which must be disappointing for western publishers – but note that most of the recent release system titles would have missed the voting period.

Here’s the full list of winners, courtesy of Siliconera.

I don’t even think any game except ninty 3ds games sold more than a million games this year.
Just shows how poor vita performance has been and that console gaming is on decline in japan.

Not surprising in any way, shape, or form. Sony have let the majority of their games (I’d go so far as to say 99%) be created by the Western divisions, and have yet to release a first party JRPG outside of White Knight Chronicles, and let’s be honest, Level 5 do not have a big sales track record in Japan.

I just keep thinking that if Sony and Mistwalker could actually collaborate on a PS3 JRPG, it’d sell Final Fantasy numbers.
