Wii U is “good, but it’s not great”, says Molyneux

Thursday, 29th November 2012 22:02 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Peter Molyneux seems a little disappointed in what he’s seen of the Wii U so far.

The legendary designer and 22 Cans co-founder told GamesIndustry he likes the Wii U, but isn’t blown away by it.

“I think the Wii U is good, but I don’t feel it’s great,” he said.

“I find holding the device in my hand – looking up at the screen and looking down at the device – slightly confusing as a consumer.”

Molyneux said he’d enjoyed the games he’d played so far but repeated that they were “not great”.

“And we really need these new pieces of hardware to be great in today’s world, because the competition is not just consoles anymore,” he said.

“The competition is everything, all the technology. When you’re holding a Kindle Fire or an iPad in your hand, it’s just amazing technology. It really is. It’s expensive, but it’s amazing technology. And people like Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft need to match that. They need to match that in my mind, and exceed it. And I’m not sure the Wii U really did that.”

Molyneux isn’t the first to air doubts regarding the console’s capacity to wow consumers; Gamasutra noted that new devices really need to “sing” straight out of the box. But the 22 Cans creative lead isn’t ready to give up on the Big N just yet – it’s surprised us all before.

“I can remember everybody in the industry laughing and giggling about how stupid the Wii was, what a stupid name it was, and who would want motion control,” he noted.

“And then it went on to sell what, 60, 70 million copies? It got people who never considered computer games to play them.”

Molyneux is becoming less and less relevant.

I just can’t trust opinions of someone who keeps making shitty predictions and games.

What was once a refreshing view of the industry, has now become useless speculation without a solid hit to back it up…

Considering he made games like Dungeon Keeper, Populous & Black & White yet can’t see the benefits of Nintendo including a tablet pad in each package speaks volumes about his ingenuity when it comes to gaming these days.

This could be the first console that allows games like this to be playable on a home console…

What an egotistical, short sighted idiot.

Funny, I was just thinking the same about his games……

Hopefully he doesn’t pump out any of his shit on Wii U.

@1: are you that thick, or just not that insightful? PM is more relevant now than ever, everytime his name pops-up, and it day in day ou, it’s hordes of comments. Not relevant in your own imaginary world.

But the more he “the persona and his antics” becomes relevant, the lesser his games and old efforts become noteworthy.

All publicity is good publicity you mean?

Fine if you want to take that view, but he hasn’t made a decent game in years. That’s a fact.

His comments are ill informed considering how much he ‘should’ understand the industry and gaming in general.

“The legendary designer”??? He’s legendary now? Maybe his bullshit is, but he’s not legendary surely. That’s Miyamoto you’re talkin’ about there…

@7: Nobody denies that he’s entitled to his opinion, as are we.

No need to insult someone just because they don’t love the Wii U, find that sort of reaction bizarre

Is that what you think we’re doing? Just defending the Wii U?

No but as I said insulting the man because of what he said about a console is bizarre imo

“I find holding the device in my hand – looking up at the screen and looking down at the device – slightly confusing as a consumer.”

“as a consumer”? Who talks like that? Does he find it any LESS confusing as a game designer, or an individual?

And he’s only off by about 30 million units for Wii’s sold. I wasn’t aware that consoles could be referred to as “copies” Did he just make that up?
