Fils-Aime: third-party games look “dramatically better” on Wii U

Sunday, 25th November 2012 23:42 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Nintendo of America boss Reggis Fils-Aime has said the Wii U is graphically superior to other current-gen systems.

Speaking to CNN, Fils-Aime defended the Wii U against claims that its specs are on par with the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

“The specs are quite different than the competitive systems; much more graphically intensive,” he said.

“If you do a side-by-side comparison you would see that third-party games like Call of Duty look dramatically better on our system.”

Asked what Nintendo would do when Microsoft and Sony release more powerful next-generation hardware, Fils-Aime was dismissive.

“In terms of what competition’s going to do in the future: we’ll see. We know based on our own development this two screen experience really is the next innovation that consumers are gravitating to,” he said.

“It’s selling extremely well here in the Americas. Already stocks are quite low in the marketplace; we’re rapidly replenishing. So for us, certainly the consumer’s deciding that the innovation is well worth their investment.”

Nintendo has been justified in this approach before; the low-powered but technically innovative Wii and DS both went gangbusters, outstripping rivals to become the best-selling consoles in their class and generation.

Well, that’s not strictly true Reggie, Is it?

Although, give it 6 months and I’m sure things will look more healthy.

    DF would disagree.

Hmm, no. They COULD, but they currently don’t.

Batman: AC sure doesn’t, but it’s still great.

Quite ridiculous that he dares to mention Call of Duty when Digital Foundry has proven them SO wrong.

Leave him alone… he’s lying because he’s trying to make himself feel better.

    But Nintendo… seriously… Make a console that’s truly revolutionary. :P

Let him have his fun. In six months or so, the 361 and PS4 will be revealed, and the Wii U’s hardware will be relegated back into 2006 where it belongs.

Reggie, thanks for that factoid. I think that may prove decisive in my decision to buy either a 360, a PS3, or a Wii U.

If he lies about this, he’s probably lying about so much more…

That’s TV I guess, he cant really go on and say, “Well Kristie its looks exactly the same as does on the seven year old consoles and runs a bit slower too”

What’s funny is how the PS3 is the only system with true 1080p resolution output on games (admittedly only some). So apparently Reggie was hoping that every single techie in the world wasn’t paying attention when he spoke.

@14 Indeed, or that nobody who had a vested interest in Call of Duty (as he obviously does) had taken a look at the Digital Foundry face-off in which the Wii U version performed rather poorly:

    Dramatically better eh Reggie?

Well Reggie is half correct, or maybe a quarter correct.

WiiU version does look better than the PS3 version and in some circumstances even matches the superior 360 version.

In multiplayer it matches performance of the PS3 version while still looking better.

It’s only the campaign where it really falls down. Who gives a shit about CoD campaigns though. They are beyond awful.

So it sits in the gulf between 360 and PS versions.

Not bad for a launch title vs. 6-7 year optimised versions.

    Not bad at all.

Fair enough, I’ll certainly concede that a middle of the road effort is not bad at all this early in the Wii U’s lifetime.

But anybody who says its ‘dramatically better’ has clearly taken one too many bites from an XL Bullshit Sandwich.

Oh absolutely, multiplats on WiiU are barely at parity so far so Reggie is clearly either ill-informed or spinning.

It won’t be all that long before he can back up his claim though. Give it 6 months or so for improved tools and optimisations and WiiU games will be outperforming PS360 games. Maybe not by much though, certainly not the degree Reggie believes!

Come on guys, what did you expect him to say? “Oh the Wii U looks somewhat better than the PS3 and the Xbox 360 version of COD”

Stop being fucking stupid, COD is far from the best looking game this generation and for some of you to think Reggie (a millionaire by the way) made this statement because of the video that DF put up are fucking stupider than I thought.

You guys really need to grow the fuck up.

This is approaching asinine, but of course he would say this. The Wii U version of COD Black Ops II looks very good, but it’s not that much better, let alone what he’s suggesting.

But yes, give it a year or so and you might start to see the Wii U pull ahead. It depends largely on the support they get. If there is an incentive to put more into the visuals of multiplatform games, i.e a decent and growing core base to market your game to, then they will do so.
