PS All-Stars Battle Royale: smashing, bro?

PS All-Stars: Battle Royale reviews are here. Are we looking at a clone of Nintendo’s Smash Bros. or does it offer a different take on the mascot mash-up? Dave Cook enters the fight to find out.

It’s entirely understandable why someone would take a fleeting glance at SuperBot and Sony Santa Monica’s PS All-Stars Battle Royale and let rip a barrage of Super Smash Bros. comparisons. The concept is exactly the same. There’s no escaping the fact.

However, if Super Mario Kart can come along and prompt a wave of shameless clones back in the 90s then why cant history repeat itself? In fact, Sony is the only platform holder capable of following the template, as it has the stock to bulk out its character roster.

Microsoft certainly isn’t up to the task, unless Master Chief and Marcus Fenix fighting the Ferrari Testarossa from Forza Motorsport 4 is your idea of a fun time. Well now that you see it on paper, maybe that’d be incredible, but still, this format is a natural fit for Sony.

But right away I have to admit – and I’ve seen many gamers share in this sentiment – that this doesn’t really feel like a celebration of all things PlayStation without the whirling antics of Crash Bandicoot. Both he and his fire-breathing cohort Spyro are currently filed away Activision’s vault of broken IP, waiting for an inevitable dust off.

But for now it’s up to the likes of Ratchet and Clank, Nathan Drake, Parappa the Rapper and Kratos to fill the Bandicoot-sized holed in our hearts and take to the battle arena. It doesn’t take long for you to realise that the similarities to Smash Bros. run rampant throughout the game.

When PS All-Stars reviews started hitting the net I read Destructoid’s glowing appraisal, and the review started with a disclaimer of sorts that stated the game should be judged on its own merits, not by a side-by-side comparison to Nintendo’s game.

I agree entirely, but it’s so hard to overlook the fact that the combat mechanic is identical to Smash Bros., save for the conditions of victory. There are three attack buttons that each do different things depending on what direction you press in tandem.

Some attacks can be charged for greater impact, others act as counters, and some drop hazards around the map like Sackboy’s electric flooring, or Drake’s rolling oil drums. It is identical to the Smash Bros. method, as is holding the left trigger to block and dodge roll.

I should be crying foul right now, except the format works so bloody well that it’s hard to see how else the game’s fluid mix of chaotic fisticuffs could have been achieved in a 2D perspective. It just works, even it is familiar, and Smash Bros. fans will be able to pick it up and dive in with little hassle.

But as I mentioned earlier, the big difference here is in the conditions for victory. In Smash Bros. your aim was to raise the percentage of each player by hitting them, making them more susceptible to a ring out. Here, you build up meter by hitting opponents and once full, you can unleash super attacks.

Land one of these signature moves and you will KO your target. The aim is to land as many of these super moves as possible within the time limit, while other rounds may task you with being the first to land three supers and so on.

There is a neat bit of risk reward at play however, as you can forego your level one super and keep chaining hits to earn a level two move, which is capable of knocking out more opponents, or you can chain big until you hit a screen-consuming level three finisher that affects everyone on-screen.

For example, Parappa’s level one super is a simple heavy strike that can KO two fighters if you time it right, while his level two super sees him zipping around on his skateboard, instantly knocking out anyone in his path. Finally, his third super sees him entering a rap battle in his own game’s trademark style before instantly knocking out every player with a triumphant shout of ‘I gotta believe!’

You can even throw enemies using the right stick, which knocks super gems out of them, depleting their gauge and giving you a chance to steal it for yourself. It’s a neat mechanic as it gives you a chance to suppress fighters dangerously close to hitting their level three super.

That’s the mechanics, but how does it handle? Well it’s a tad scrappy at the outset, but once you start figuring out attack ranges, the way combo strikes work, and the importance of blocking and air dodging, the whole format broadens considerably.

Like its Nintendo counterpart, anyone can get in on the fun by mashing buttons, but considered players can break away from the pack and really dish out some smart moves. Dante is a good example, as you can use his standard combo to hammer people into the screen’s edge, and use his Osiris whirlwind attack to catch them as they bounce back.

Raiden is also capable of some pretty neat combo strings as he unleashes his high frequency blade up high before attaching it to his foot and sweeping enemies to the ground down low. If you put in the practice you can become capable of some really painful tricks, and this is where Sony’s brawler starts to propose a deeper experience.

There are also tons of playercard decals, emblems and mascots to unlock in Arcade Mode, giving you a chance to show off your skills before a bout has even begun.”

Street Fighter maestro Seth Killian’s presence during development is especially noticeable in the extensive practice mode, which offers up a wide range of adjustable parameters and CPU activity geared towards helping you improve your game.

All of this effort is tangible in the experience, but the fan service on offer here simply doesn’t stack up to the mascot might of Nintendo. Sure Sony fans will get a kick out of seeing Jak & Daxter pounding on Sweet Tooth during Uncharted 3′s plane stage, but other stages fail to offer any real thrill, even though SuperBot has opted to mash stages together.

For example, the God of War stage sees a giant Hades in the background. He randomly swipes at players, adding a dynamic edge to the fight. About mid-way through the round clock, the backdrop shatters and blends with PSP title Patapon, as a funky beat kicks segues with the sweeping orchestral track.

Then, every so often, the Patapon in the background will take up arms and hurl their spears into the area, battering any players silly enough to get in the way. These moments are superb, but many arenas just feel weak by comparison.

For example, the brown hues of the San Francisco Resistance arena offer little in the way of character, aside from the odd tray missile that obliterates part of the scenery. The same can be said for Sly Racoon’s Paris backdrop. They simply aren’t as memorable or as fun as Smash Bros. Mushroom Kingdom stage or the hazardous racetrack of F-Zero’s ‘Big Blue’.

There are notable exceptions however, such as Master Onion’s dojo from Parappa the Rapper, or a brilliant mash-up between Loco Roco and Metal Gear Solid 2, that sees a hulking Metal Gear RAY stomping around a colourful garden paradise.

Online play is where Battle Royale trumps Smash Bros. however, as it’s a superb format full of monthly ‘season’ challenges and ranked battles. There are also tons of playercard decals, emblems and mascots to unlock in Arcade Mode, giving you a chance to show off your skills before a bout has even begun.

The net code is – at review stage – rock solid, although that may change once the public get their mitts on the game. Playing against humans is as you’d expect, much more fun that battling AI opponents, as brutal as they may be on top tier difficulty. It’s a scrappy mess that serves to enthuse and excite, even if the source material lacks spark.

If I had to pick one other thing that sums up Battle Royale’s varying levels of fan service, I’d have to pick the items. In Smash Bros. you had identifiable objects from Nintendo history such as mushrooms, Pokeballs and more.

Here you have giant fish, rocket launchers and the occasional God of War melee weapon. They rarely appear, so only offer a mild distraction at times. In a way that’s a good thing as it means people are focusing on combat, rather than hurling shit across the screen in the hope of scoring lucky hits.

Is this game worth playing? Well yes absolutely. It’s a solid fighter that is simple to play, doesn’t ask you much from you, but offers hidden depth if you want to take your experience that little bit further.

The PS Vita build is also a superb showcase of visuals, with chunky character models and lots of madness going on without any frame rate issues or any nonsense like that. It’s just a fun, guilt-free experience that offers a quick dose of carnage.

Now come on Microsoft: Master Chief versus Marcus Fenix versus the Ferrari Testarossa from Forza 4. Make it happen, yeah?

    It’s a competent clone then, certainly better than others that have been attempted over the years, but nothing more than that. Clearly the PlayStation deserves a vastly more significant game to honour its influence on gaming. Copying Nintendo’s own celebration seems not only wrong-headed but borderline offensive. In this case fans definitely deserve better.

    @1 I’d say that ‘borderline offensive’ is way too strong. It’s a competent game that is fun. The reviewer perhaps has a Smash Bros-shaped stick up their ass.

    I love Smash Bros. but this isn’t a bad game, even if it does copy that format to a tee.

    @5 I’m not sure and it’s a perfectly valid question, but the game is fun regardless. I can’t fault it in that department in my appraisal. It works, and Sony fans will likely lap it up.

    I think the clone nature of the game could be the topic of an editorial. Cloning happens a lot these days, especially in the mobile market. It’s shameful practice at times.

    @8 I’d say that it’s pretty close to a clone man, sorry. But it’s handled well. I think it works very well. It does a few small things different that work well – more combos, more technical moves, better online etc.

    It’s not unique, but then shall we also call out PES for being too similar to FIFA? Where does it end?

    I played the Vita PS Plus beta.

    I see this game like that guy who ghost-writes Bond novels in the style of Flemming. It might be perfectly fine and good in isolation but Jesus is it depressing.

    Its entirely possible to create something like this game without ripping off another (pretty much unique) games style.

    Sony Smash Bros could have been a pile up of Power Stone, Smash Bros, possibly the scrolling things from Tekken. Hell look at the upcoming Jojo game.

    I cant say I think basing the entire combat around power moves should be called “risk reward”. Anyone who has ever played SSB will know the intensity around having over 100% health with the last life, while dodging attacks. Sounds kinda strange to complain about something that differs them from Nintendo’s fighter game, but in my opinion it makes the game a tad hollow.

    I’ve seen plenty of gameplay videos of this and that’s enough for me to know i won’t bother with this one at all. I’ve never been a hardcore Smash Bros fan but the times that i played it, i really enjoyed it. But that was because of the cool characters, it really was Nintendo’s own game, their own thing. Of course that wasn’t to last.

    Not a big Smash Brothers fan, so not a big fan of this game, even though I waaaaaaaaaaaaaay prefer these characters to the Nintendo ones (being I am not a child, anymore). However, I’m actually recommending it to my more casual PS3 owning friends.

    BUT I do have to take issue with one part of the article, as an American…

    That is NOT Los Angeles, but San Francisco. That’s the Golden Gate Bridge in the background. I thought you Europeans were supposed to be better than us at geography. lol

    I really thought this game was gonna be bad… turns out it wasn’t… I really want to grab it and play on my Vita for all eternity!

    Now to those calling it a COMPLETE clone, I’d say many games came out that just rip off SMB, this one actually have a great gap between that classic… A true RO would be Jumps’ fighting game, it was 100% equal to SB but I love that game… Okay, this game might have the crit-system and points of Smash Bros, but the gameplay and the levels are so different, the specials and such make this game a solid and great arcade fighting game… If it had more characters such as Cloud and Crash, then it would be head-to-head on SB, but now it just shows that Sony might just know what they are doing… might

    Oh and I could picture Raiden X FP X Parrapa X Big Daddy miles away, and I somehow could see it working…

    I’m hooked on the game. I just downloaded the vita version after I had been playing on the console the last 2 days. And, It’s extremely fun. It has all the components I wished Smash had because I don’t really like the knock off method. I also, like how each character has a unique play style even the Coles are different.

    Only issue I have is the cheesiness of the rival intro’s. It’s just stand and talk. They could have done a lot more with those giving a quick battle sequence or changing environment. This game really feels like a fighter as opposed to a party.

    Have been doing online/offline 1v1 and the intensity is crazy on stock. Trying to avoid that super. Evading at the right time. Making sure the bored doesn’t screw you over. It definitely has it’s own charm and uniqueness from smash.

    Really glad I bought it and pretty much a third of my friendslist has it(I maxed out 100 :’( and they are ssf4 or umvc3 buddies)

    @21 – Honestly, I wish the BETA had had 1v1. It might have changed my mind a bit towards the game. From what I played, it was very similar to a game I didn’t like in the first place (Smash Brothers), with too many characters on screen and too much going on in the background.

    As I’ve said many times, though, I still think Sony should have just gone with a full-on fighting game, instead of this. Smash Brothers’ dumbed down style works on Nintendo systems because of who the audience generally is. The PS3 is pretty much where the majority of the current FGC is, so a well-done 2.5D 1v1 fighter probably would have been received better than this. This was pretty much just asking for the Nintendo magic crowd to pick it apart and people like myself who don’t like the Smash games to not be that interested in.

    I do like, however, that when one of the typical Nintendo fanboys on here tries to put down the roster, they pick the characters that nobody is buying the game for to pick on. No one is buying it to play as Fat Princess. It’d be like me making fun of Smash Brothers for having Mr. Game and Watch or whatever his name was.

    It’s the cheapest attempt at an insult.

    Look, Nintendo even did it with Metroid. They needed a FPS to go up against Sony & MS, hence Prime was born on the Gamecube.

    Thing is, when Nintendo (or Retro in this case) do it, they tend to make a better game than the one they are copying.

    Another example which was met with exactly the same way from Sony fans was Quantum Redshift on Xbox. In this case it was trying to be MS’s answer to Wipeout:

    It happens all the time, but to blindly refuse this situation is just silly.

    Also, it’s not just Fat Princess, most of the selection is weak. So weak Sony shouldn’t have bothered with this. The one saving grace is the dual platform option, I guess they need something to help shift it.

    Loving the marketing too, send it out to die in front of Black Ops 2 and a new console launch. Smooooooth move again Sony.

    This happens all the time, it just seems to happen more with Nintendo.

    Mario, Mario in 3D, Smash Brothers, F-Zero, Pikmin, Pokemon, Mario Kart, Mario Party, Zelda, etc etc…

    As I said before, it’s nothing to be ashamed of, just respect history! ;)

    Games are constantly ‘cloned’ from other games. Why does it bother you so much that people are enjoying this and defending it from those who deem it unworthy or shite?

    I dont see the problem of this game being made to compete neck to neck with smash brothers, because thats how this industry goes, for every Gran turismo, we have the forzas; for every mario kart we have our modnations little big planet kart game, or the sonic kart racing game, for all the metal gears we have the splinter cell, and this for almost of type of genres and games, the only problem if its the game that they are based on, and for that the game they are trying to compete with, is not good, if it can stands on its own, while copying some ideas, then is good, because we have more of the games we like.

    What i dont understand is the people that like smash bros, but not this game or that like all stars but not smash bros, becuase that says only one thing, they dont like the company that makes the game, not the game on itself, which is quite amusing and funny if you ask me.

I think it’s taking a lot of flack mainly due to the fact that NO-ONE ELSE has really created a Smash Bros clone yet, so this is the first blatant imitation of that format, whereas all other genres have seen many clones come and go over the years (as you rightly said).

    Smash Bros has had a fair few clones only no one was trying to deny they were complete lifts of the Smash template.

    Theres the Jump Super/Ultimate Star games for the DS which is Smash with Shounen Jump characters. Then theres this : DreamMix TV World Fighters

    It has some of the same stylistic, minor changes thats been added into Sony Smash. In those three cases though no one was ever pretending that they were’nt just Smash Brothers games with different characters.

    I’m sure Sony Smash is different, I’m sure its a perfectly fun game but jesus stop trying to pretend its not just a straight of a specific games design. Its not one game being in the same genre as another its one game directly coping another. Which is ok to a degree, its depressing but its not the end of the world.

    From the experience I’ve had playing the PS3 version of the game, it’s garbage.

    Aesthetically, it’s an utter mess. Its a fairly horrendous mishmash of completely unconnected art-styles, with absolutely no attempt to blend them together. It’s overall design lacks absolutely any charm whatsoever – menus are dull, animation is devoid of character. Its all lifeless and boring.

    Gameplay is weak. Balance is all over the shop, there’s little to no actual tactical depth, and victory is a facerolling race to the finish line. There’s just no thought to the mechanics at all. Using a controller or arcade stick makes also little difference. I doubt they even put any consideration into that area. There’s absolutely nothing in this game that gives it any potential for a strong competitive future.

    Hey, if you enjoy the game, good for you. This is all just our opinions, and at the end of the day opinions are incapable of being facts, so there’s absolutely no point in getting butthurt about them.

    I will agree the menus are downright bad, but in terms of gameplay, its the deepest and the best 4-person brawl I have ever played, many agree with it. I for one, hated those big percentages on ssb games. And all-stars beats every other game in it genre to dust with its awesome stages and superb graphics. Until a better ssb arrives on wiiu, all-stars is the best 4-person fighting game anyone can get.
