Star Citizen funding closes with $6.2 million

Star Citizen has completed its crowd-funding period with a record-breaking $6,271,458 raised.

Of this total, $2,134,374 was garnered through Kickstarter and another $137,084 directly through Roberts Space Industries. In total, 90,185 backers contributed at an average of just over $69 each.

"Our gratitude is immeasurable; we owe you our livelihoods and will not soon forget it," the developer said in an update to the Kickstarter page.

From here on in, the project will still accept donations, but new backers will miss out most of the rewards offered earlier. Roberts Space Industries will become a community-focused site, and will eventually allow only backers from either stream entry to regularly scheduled updates.

Backers met and exceeded every stretch goal the company could think up, hugely surpassing its now modest-seeming $2 million goal.

Star Citizen will also receive traditional investor funding, and aims to deliver the most ambitious PC space sim yet conceived. Check out some new footage released yesterday. In addition to the core game, Star Citizen will include a multiplayer military title called Squadron 42. Both are expected in late 2014.
