PlayStation 3 sales reach 70 million units worldwide

Friday, 16 November 2012 06:33 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Sony Computer Entertainment has announced a significant milestone for the PlayStation 3, with similar impressive feats from the PlayStation Move controller system.

Since its launch in November 2006, 70 million PlayStation 3 consoles have been sold worldwide, SCE announced today. The milestone was officially pipped on November 4.

There are now over 3,590 games published for the PlayStation 3, with over 595 million units sold worldwide.

The PlayStation Move motion controller system has managed 15 million sales since its own launch in September 2010. It is now supported by over 400 compatible titles, including the recently released Wonderbook system.

Sony took the time to note that the PlayStation 3 has evolved through multiple hardwar revisions, culminating in the September release of the Super Slim model, the smallest and most energy-efficient version to date, boasting the largest HDD sizes.

The PlayStation Network launched alongside the PlayStation 3 in November 2006 and now operates in 59 territories, offering 170,000 pieces of downloadable content, of which just 57,000 are game-related, the rest being entertainment applications including movies, music and sports. The PlayStation store was re-launched in October in Europe, South America and the US.

    So this puts it neck and neck with the 360 then, seeing as MS reported 70 million sales less than 20 days ago.

    And despite this, all I ever hear from people around me is “PS3 sucks, I play games on my Xbox”, fuckin fanboys.
    Anyhow, congrats Sony, wish you well, and if recently released sales figures for physical media is anything to go by, Day 1 Digital just might be one of the wisest business moves yet.

    @TD_Monstrous69
    I agree with you. X360 is one year older then the PS3, and they have the same sales. This is great news, and all the stories that SONY has lost this gen are just a big piece of crap.

    Very impressive from Sony, I think we only hear the negative comments about Sony sales because are journalism intake is focused on US & UK.

    While a vast majority of countries are very Sony lead, like Spain, Germany, South America, and parts of Asia and Africa.

    *Ahem* Sorry, about that. Just figured I’d give it a try, before the actual posts saying that sort of nonsense appeared. I figured it must feel good since so many people seem to get their jollies writing premature epitaphs for Sony. They’ve been doing it since 2007, after all.

    Nope, don’t feel any different.

    PS3′s a bit shite, innit?

    Nope, that didn’t do it, either.

    Oh well.

    But yeah, I’m not surprised by this. The United States is the only market where Sony is behind and I still think a lot of that has to do with how much better at marketing Microsoft are than Sony.

    #10 2 years ago
  11. Mike W

    @10

    I agree, but I don’t understand why anyone would want to see anyone one of these manufacturers back out of the market?

    This is good news, if it’s one thing this generation showed us between the big 3, is that it was an even playing ground. It wasn’t like the last two generations where Sony dominated. Like tezzer said I don’t see know how anybody can be upset over this. But never under estimate stupidity, because it never ceases to amaze me. There’s going to be one or several media outlets that try to downplay it.

    how much better at marketing Microsoft are than Sony.
    Hardly. Sony are much better at converting idiots convincing themselves they’re somehow better because they play another toy though.

    Have you ever seen an xbox fanboy belittling themselves to defend MS on the internet? That’s beyond advertising, brah. That’s devotion.

    My point is simple – they both advertise, and they both have idiotic pseudo-followers. What I was pointing out is how these fans try and differentiate between conflicting camps.

    #16 2 years ago
  17. Mike W

    @16

    Good point, it’s a no-brainer that a consumer will try to justify their purchase to their last breath, which is expected. But this type of “devotion” has move onto the media as well.

    For example, and for the record this is just my opinion. R. Leadbetter from Eurogamer/DF has to be the biggest undercover fanboy I’ve ever seen. I think all the adults here can agree that their face offs are subjective and its clearly for the fanboys that don’t have multiple consoles. With that being said, there are several articles that I read from him where he clearly contradicts himself.

    The point I’m trying to make is that it’s bigger than just the fans that purchase the console of their choice. The media has the mindset as one of these damn loyalists to these manufacturers.

  18. ManuOtaku

    I happy with this, this will be the first generation, when all three manufactures produced good numbers, it is very equal, i like that all have success, now sony did lose some market comparing it with their previous consoles, for a couple reasons, is not worht mentioning here, it is time of celebration rather than criticizing time, well done at the end of the day they bounce back with decent numbers, so good that we might have a tie in the end of this gen for the second place, great job for all manufacturers, and i hope next gen it will be the same case, i mean that all of them do good numbers and that the winner, whoever ends up being number one, doenst have a hughe lead like in the ps2 period.

    #18 2 years ago
  19. ps3fanboy

    at this junction of junctions its a fact that xboxfanboys are a bit more stupid than ps3fanboys. xboxfanboys pay to play online while they get forced advertisement. this advertisement already pay for the online gaming. micro$oft have been double dipping, right in these xboxfanboys faces for years now. while ps3fanboys have been playing online for free for years. they also have a choice of paying if they want to. the service is called ‘psplus’ you get free older games and can pay half the price for new games. this without any advertisement at all..

    they also live in denial of the rrod that plagued the xbox360 for 5 years, with a xbox360 failure rate of 80% at its peak.

    other things with xbox is these insane silly prices for hd upgrade, and nearly none exclusive games. the latest now in the news is that the kinetic are going to be used as a spycam for micro$oft that will monitoring their users…

    these xboxfanboys can try to defend their gaming rig as much they want but its futile. the rest of the world outside of usa that, just laugh at them…

    #19 2 years ago
  20. ManuOtaku

    #19 “with a xbox360 failure rate of 80% at its peak”

    Not to start a discussion here but any particular reference or source for the above indicated number, iam quite amaze as such higher failure rates, when my 2005 white 20GB model is still playing till this day, and my other two xbox from 2008 and 2011 are also in great shape, all my xbox consoles worked fine without any reparations, i know iam not everybody and that people did in fact presented failures with their consoles, but that high numbers, i doub it.

    #20 2 years ago
  21. ps3fanboy

    @20

    heres one article about it…

    Xbox 360 failure rate is the highest among consoles in 2011
    http://www.lensoftruth.com/xbox-360-failure-rate-is-the-highest-among-consoles-in-2011/

    and that is just the tip on the iceberg… the years before that and that and that… way back to the start. so for 5 years constant on top of the failure rate list every year, you can easily see a 80% fail rate. its not published official of course, that would be a suicide for micro$oft, to admit they have released a junk of a product for years..

    #21 thanks for the link, i dont know is for my filters at work, but i didnt saw the 80% fail rate reference on the article or in the survey, i did only saw they were the highest among all consoles, and that those failure rates did drop with every new revision of their SKU, but not an 80% reference.

    #23 2 years ago
  24. TheOutcastWolf

    @10 Oh my god you are one of those commenters…

    You see, Microsoft only appears to have such good marketing because they just care about the games, not the console overall… a smart gamer would go search for what the X360 may offer and then grab it at his own wish…

    Sony’s market goes beyond that, like Nintendo’s… First they give you a rundown on the console, then they jump into its games, which mostly works for both companies!

    And I have to say, more X360 are being sold or have already been sold due to Microsoft’s strategy to ban the console not only the accounts for gamers who attempt to mod or even are reported for ‘abusive gaming’, forcing you to buy a new machine… And the cases of ’3RL’ have a bigger percentage towards the cases of ‘Yellow Light’

    The other numbers are: Which machines are more connected? PC, then PS3 and X360, followed, sadly by Nintendo, which deserves much more atention by the so called ‘gamers’

    @21 seriously, you are twisted minded… some times you defend the 360, then you defend the PS3 and not a single time you defended Nintendo… but when you do defend the PS3, you sound more like a troll than a normal fanboy…

    Well I’m on my 3rd PS3 after 2 failures… So a little thankyou from Kaz for helping Sony achieve this milestone would be nice ;-)

  26. Clupula

    @24 – I don’t know about other countries, but in the U.S., I frequently see commercials for games where if you didn’t have any sort of knowledge of the actual games, you’d think the game was exclusive to the 360. For example, I remember the Final Fantasy XIII commercials which didn’t even mention the PS3 version and had the big X-Box 360 logo at the end. More recently, the Resident Evil 6 commercials do the same thing.

    Plus, Microsoft know how to make a game an event. As mediocre as I think the Halo series is, Microsoft have been #1 at knowing how to hype something up. When Halo 4 came out, that was an event. There’s no denying that. When God of War 3 came out, it was a big deal to people who owned PS3′s, but it wasn’t like the outside media covered, at least, here. If Sony were half as good at marketing and advertising as Microsoft are, they would probably sell twice as many systems.

    Microsoft are probably second to none with their ability to make people see stuff and think, “I need to have that.”

  30. OlderGamer

    I recently read that upto 70% of new console purcheses are made up of replacment units or gamers going multi system owners or even budget gamers.

    In all three cases, the article claimed, that none of the purchases will have an impact on actual game sales. Because replacement system, for obvious reasons. While buyers buying a competers system is nice, esp for exclsuives, mostly those gamers will still buy their mulitplate games on the first system, plus not like they are going to increase their spending just because they have a new system. And the budget gamers aren’t high dollor comsumers that spend much on games to begin with.

    My point is that in terms of systems sold in the last couple of years, the industry is mostly spinning their tires. In otherwords, the sales, while seemingly nice on paper, don’t mean much.

    #30 2 years ago
  31. OlderGamer

    Because someone will undoubtibly question my claim:

    http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2012-11-12-games-retail-in-decline-can-industry-recover-this-holiday

    “”We are late in a console cycle and 71 percent of new console purchases are done by consumers who are either replacing a broken console or are purchase a competing console–turning them into multi-console homes. In either case, these consumers are already part of the ecosystem, so their contribution is minimal. Those that are buying their first console, so late in the cycle, are generally extremely price sensitive and contribute little to software and digital sales,” EEDAR’s Jesse Divnich told us.”

    Just like the large number of film reviewers who panned Shawshank on original release and the many hundreds of Liverpool fans who walked out before the end of 90 minutes in the Champions’ League final, at the end of this generation you won’t find many journalists, analysts or gamers who’ll admit they said the PS3 would either flop and get pulled or end in a distant third place. And as for those who said the PS3 would bring down Sony? Well, time for your medication.

    @32 Except it *is* in a distant third place. Not only is it still behind in sales in comparison to the Xbox 360, but far more significantly… it has a lower attach rate of games sales, it’s digital marketplace is nowhere near as profitable for developers, and the division is hemorrhaging money its going out of fashion or something.

    And this point in its lifespan, the PS2 had already sold over 100 million units.

    On a purely financial level, the only truly successful console this generation has been the Wii.

    Thank god the format you own means absolutely nothing though, right?

    #34 2 years ago
  35. zinc

    Well, fourth place if you include the pc…

    But PS3 owners are scientifically proven to be much cooler nerds.

    #35 2 years ago
  36. Gekidami

    @34
    I’d love to see a source for the attach rate, seeing as MS dont actually release software sales (only the NPD do and its for US only) whilst Sony themselves do. Whilst you’re at it, a source for devs making less money off PSN & a source saying the PlayStation brand is “haemorrhaging money” -thats PlayStation, btw, not their DVD players or mobile phones- would be great too.

    Oh, and by the hey; According to the actual financial reports, the PS3 is already ahead of the 360 by 0.2:

    As Dragon pointed out (though without a source) the PS brand that apparently doesnt make any money as we’re constantly told, made more operating profit than the Xbox brand according to each platform holders last quarterly figures:

    http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/01/sony-posts-net-loss-of-198-million-for-q2-playstation-profits/

    http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2012-10-18-xbox-business-sees-operating-income-plunge-94-percent-in-q1

    Thats $29 million PS, $19 million Xbox. But please, keep grasping at staws, i’ll just keep pumping the facts.

    ^Thank you for the reply. Next time please try and respond within a minute, to ensure that quotesoothes your acking bottom refers to a proper person.

    Your fanboy hysteria and allegedly currently not so abysmal gaming division doesn’t change the fact that Sony are on the right track..

    @34

    MS shipped its 70 millionth in September. Sony about six weeks later. MS’ 70 million includes – by nearly every account – at least a million retail-replaced RRoDs and possibly many more (so a single sale in these cases is counted twice; MS have always refused to acknowledge that specific question let alone provide the answer). I’d say the evidence is that Sony has now sold more PS3s than MS has 360s globally. All that is without pointing out their relative release dates, prices and media coverage.

    In the “rest of the world” outside of the US, I’ll hazard a guess the PS3 passed the 360 early last year. Unfortunately however it’s all about the US for the media and many gamers. Month after month we had the NPDs reported globally, which contributed to the negative perceptions of the PS3. Never mind that at the time the PS3 was usually selling more everywhere else.

    Just accept it, MS will finish this gen in last place. Why is that such a problem? It is a statement of fact, albeit a predicted one.

    “Thank god the format you own means absolutely nothing though, right?”

    Format? Singular? Are you saying I’m a Sony PS3 fanboi or comment with a particular bias? I own seven different consoles and handhelds, only two of which are Sony.
