Sony selling convertible bonds worth $1.9 billion to help fund Gaikai acquisition

Thursday, 15th November 2012 09:16 GMT By Nick Akerman

Sony is making a little extra cash by selling $1.9 billion worth of convertible bonds. Some of the figure will be used to finance the company’s purchase of Gaikai, while up to a third will be invested into Japanese optics group Olympus Corp.

Sony is also looking to repay debts and heighten its focus on CMOS image sensors. A net loss of $198 in Q1 2012 has forced a major rethink, as the gaming division continues to suffer a year-on-year decline in profit.

Sony has already lowered its yearly sales expectations from 16 million to 10 million for the PSP and PS Vita, with PS3 hardware sales also down from 4.9 million to 3.5 million in the last report.

Still, Black Ops: Declassified should help shift a few more handhelds, right? Oh.

Thanks, Joystiq.

Who knows, the reviewers are shitting all over that game. Sony needs a killer app for the Vita. The vita is going thru the same cycle as the 3DS when it came out. The only major difference is that Nintendo had crazy support from third party developers, the vita has next to none.

It’s a shame really, the vita is such a great product and I hope Sony makes the system more attractive in the future.

Yeah, BO-Declassified sounds like the laziest most cynical cash-in attempt ever. Such a wasted opportunity.

It seems like it’s déjà vu all over again. The vita is having the same exact experience as the PS3 when it was released back in 2006.

As far as BO: D goes, it’s activision…..I didn’t expect them to do anything creative with that game. I can’t wait until the market wakes up and realize that they’re buying the same shit over and over again, so we can finally be rid of that company.

Regardless of any ‘killer app’ it might help sales a little if they actually advertised the thing properly! Outside of the core gaming circle people know very little if anything about the Vita.

Sony really need to take a long hard look at their marketing department as they seem to completely miss the mark every time. Only thing they do right is Bravia adverts! And even they tell you next to nothing about the products, they’re just pretty cool adverts!

@1 & 2, Can’t help but agree with you both about Black Ops: Declassified, could’ve been something great if it had been handled right, same with Resistance Burning Skies. Hope KillZone Mercenaries turns out better than these two, cause that looks like it’s got real potential.
Can’t really argue with any of the business moves they’re making. They need capital, so they’re raising it by selling off bonds, and I’m curious to see if the investment in Olympus optic sensory tech will carry over to any of Sony’s other tech divisions (I’m eying you Playstation).

Wow only a net loss of $198 in Q1? Thought it as more than that! ;)

Where it is wasted? What’s the difference between Declassified and current CoD?

    They have the same quality.

In overall I think that Hirai is doing some nice things there.Olympus was a decent move and so is gaikai.I think any gamer with some tech-geek DNA can look forward to CES 2013 to see what changes they make to their product lines.
On Vita, I think that the whole thing can be simpler. There is PS+ which gives buyers the games. If they cut the price of Memory cards, then it will make sense to buy Vita.Add a few bundles, another two great colors and it can sell a lot.

Hirai is so awesome. Can’t wait for PS4 that will make Sony bankrupt completely. Yaay!

Kotaku seem fairly sure that Sony’s damage is already beyond repair: Linky linklink.

    It’s a very interesting read.

Even if they do file for bankruptcy it will be to cut back on their TVs and other divisions where they are not doing so great. I don’t know why people have this misconception on bankruptcy like its the worst thing in the world, major companies do it all the time. Even Nintendo file for it way back.

But I hope they do pull out of the market all together, because that’s what you’re hoping for right? Plus it will save the gamer community from your ignorance and stupidity.

Its amazing how haters manage to hate without any proof what so ever.
    @11
Do you know what condition sharp and panasonic are in? Bet you dont, because you only hate sony.
    @12
Well said. They could make instant profits of billions if they cut out some businesses, but if they can maintain it the hardware business, why not do it? Unlike what haters say, sony isn’t going bankrupt anytime soon.

I agree with you. The amount hate and negative attention Sony gets from the gaming media and community this gen, is beyond human comprehension.

Forgive me for saying this, but Erthazus is just dumb or playing dumb. The other manufacturers in his/her eyes can do no wrong. But if it’s Sony…..just read his past comments and you will see my point.

It would great if once, just once, you didn’t sound like a precious little crybaby when you post. So delicate, so hurt by someone else’s opinion. It’s truly pathetic. YOU are truly pathetic.

Grow the fuck up kid. Learn that people have differing opinions. Accept it. When you leave school that knowledge will serve you well.

Oh, and when Sharp or Panasonic are a major player in the console business and make as many fuckups as Sony, then you’ll here me complain about them too.

“Its amazing how haters manage to hate without any proof what so ever.”

Indeed. So amazing it almost makes me sick thinking about it.

…Oh wait, we aren’t talking about Nintendo and WiiU?

    Nevermind then.

As far as Sony goes, haven’t I been saying they are in deep trouble for a while now? Can they recover and get back on track? I don’t know. Everything, it would seem is riding on Vita and PS4 launch. For Sony the future is right now.
