NPD - Q3 digital sales in US up 22% to $1.4 billion

NPD Group Q3 2012 Games Market Dynamics report has been released for the US, and the data shows a 22% increase in digital sales.

According to the report, digital brought in $1.4 billion in sales at retail for the period of July - September 2012.

NPD notes the $1.4 billion spent on digital content brought consumer spend to $2.87 billion for Q3 in all sectors tracked.

"When including overall consumer content spending across both digital and physical formats in Q3 2012, there was a positive story for the industry,” said NPD analyst Liam Callahan.

“Despite declines in physical format spending of 16% from Q3 2011, strong growth in digital format spending, up 22 percent, helped offset this decline and led to 1% decline in content spending from the same quarter last year.

"Mobile App spending, digital full game downloads, and downloadable add-on content were the areas within digital format spending that helped drive this increase.”

New physical console and PC title spend came in at $1.07 billion in the US and another $399 million was spent on used and rental titles.
