Source Engine 2 in the works at Valve – report

Sunday, 11th November 2012 22:59 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Valve boss Gabe Newell has reportedly confirmed that the developer is working on a new version of its lauded Source engine.

The confirmation came during a visit to Valve headquarters by members of 4Chan’s /v/ board, via a video of Newell meeting his birthday well-wishers which has appeared on YouTube.

According to captions supplied by the uploader, included a short Q&A where Newell was asked whether Source Engine 2 is in development.

“We’ve been working on new engine stuff for a while. We’ve just been waiting for a game to roll it out with,” the subtitles say, although the audio is not clear.

Another visitor asked if it is an entirely new engine, and Newell confirmed; this runs counter to the developer’s previous stance on iterative engine improvements.

A Source 2 reveal has been expected since mid 2010.

Thanks, Joystiq.

    They’ve been holding it off so that Source 2 can make its debut on the new console generation with Half Life 3. That’s been my theory. :P

    All Rumors, I smell BS, Valve have it so easy, they wait for things to be cheaper, theres no point making a game people can’t run, because only a handful of gamer will buy it. The sucess to valve games on PC is how easy they are to run even on old systems, and source is easy to mod for. Valve is all about the masses.

    I never started guessing when it came to Valve rumors, and I’m not starting now. So all I can say is 3 things about this;
    1. Maybe
    2. It’ll basically print money
    3. Valve is a true enigma in this industry (compared to everyone else), so figuring them out before they let info slip is impossible.

    It’s good news, it seems to suggest strongly that Half-Life 3 is also in the pipe and may come out as soon as 2015! ^-^

    Pieces are coming into place. This was expected. While Source 1 looks decent and runs great it loads slow and can’t handle high-res textures. They needed a new engine for Half-Life 3 and the new space game.

    halo 4, bungies destiny and HL3 are my most anticipated games….now that halo 4 is out, the next contender will be??
