Witcher dev wants to take series beyond games

Thursday, 8th November 2012 11:40 GMT By Dave Cook

The Witcher series could go beyond the realm of gaming, according to developer CD Projekt RED. The RPG series is already based on a 1986 book penned by author Andrzej Sapkowski, but the game’s developer hopes to take the series back to other media in future.

Responding to a Eurogamer interview with Sapkowski, CD Projekt RED’s managing director Adam Badowski stated, “It’s true that the game was based on the popularity of the Witcher novels, so there’s no sense in wondering what came first, the chicken or the egg. In this case, the books and the author are both of those things.

“Our cooperation has a strict and defined direction. I can’t imagine Andrzej Sapkowski playing a game to do research for the new novels. This is unlikely and would look like writing a book for a game or movie release, which ends badly in most cases; the novel winds up in a collector’s edition and then covers with dust somewhere on the gamer’s shelf.

“We want to develop The Witcher’s universe in other media, not only video games. We have Mr. Sapkowsk’s blessing and what we create is in line with his vision of the world, no matter how the saga will evolve.

“We want The Witcher’s universe to be a part of pop-culture like Star Wars or The Lord of the Rings, and for our fanbase to expand rapidly. We just have to carefully and diligently do our thing.”

Would you be interested in seeing The Witcher adapted for the big screen, or perhaps moulded in to a new series of books? Let us know what you think below.

    Was I the only one who was really disappointed by the second game?

    @1 Yes!

    @Dave I’ve read both the books and I’m expecting the translated version of the 3rd one at the moment. I enjoyed them. And the answers to your questions are yes and yes. :)

    The second game was one of the best games in 2011 and by far much better than the first game. Disappointed? Fuck no.

    I doubt The Witcher can get as popular as Star Wars and LOTR, but I personally wouldn’t mind an animated feature. Some well-made Youtube fanfilm would be pretty awesome as well. Of course, comics would be appropriate also.

    EDIT: Lol, already people working on a fan film: http://youtu.be/2wEFq_puDWQ
