Steam Halloween sale tempts headline writers

Tuesday, 30th October 2012 02:37 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Steam is throwing a huge sale to celebrate Halloween. Sixty games either directly horror-themed or with Halloween content have been discounted by between 25% and 80%, with a good range of triple-A and indie, old and new. It is exceptionally difficult to continue talking about this and not fall back on terrible puns and sad cliché, so let’s stop.

Speaking of brilliant headlines. Have a fistful of candy corn for that one Brenna.

You do realize you just indirectly insulted the entire staff of Rock, Paper, Shotgun though, right? Once you take away the terrible puns and sad clichés..

… Better write a retraction before you end up in one of them there internet dramas.

Once you take away the terrible puns you still have some good articles left was the rest of that sentence by the way.

@1 @2 the RPS teams are great at puns. I am the exact opposite of great and have sworn off. Holidays make it terrible, terrible tempting though.

@4 Yeah, no. I think someone forgot to explain to them that there’s a defining difference between being punny, and being funny. They are not the same thing, and no amount of conveniently distant hipster irony will ever change that.

No, sorry. RPS is an ego blog. That’s what bugs me about it. For most of them it’s just a soap box for them to shout about how great they are. The only last bastion of them not being that was John Walker, but I think even he’s falling prey to it now, given his company.

It’s a testament to how great they are, how flawless their opinions are. Which means that they can often do things like rant about those console owning troglodytes. And because RPS is such a cult of personality, you end up with a Life of Brian scenario. You’ll have hordes of people begging RPS to tell them what idiots they or other people are.

RPS reminds me too much of politics in that regard.

There are insidious layers to it which just bug me. It’s just a way for each writer there to push their particular agenda. And you have the readers who’ll do absolutely anything to get in good with the cool kids, even participating in pun threads to be noticed. It’s a really sad state of affairs.

So you have this sense of the decadent lords on high telling the low and worthless plebians what they should be thinking, because those plebians are too ill of mind to form their own opinions.

One of the best examples of this is that they react badly to people pointing out errors in their articles. They can get passive-aggressive about it, and they can even randomly delete or make fun of comments that raise very obviously incorrect points if it pleases them. It’s just so arrogant, and they’re so full of themselves.

I like VG24/7 because they know they’re human. They make mistakes. And they present articles to you as objectively as they can, without revelling in intellectual dishonesty. So… if you ask me? We get better articles here. Sure, they’re not trying to sound all clever and pseudo-intellectual, but that’s a bonus, not a caveat.
