Neverwinter Paris Games Week demo nets beta access

Tuesday, 30th October 2012 01:57 GMT By Brenna Hillier

If you can make it to Paris Games Week, which kicks off on October 31 and runs through November 4, stop by one of Perfect World Entertainment’s 20 booths to have a go at the playable Neverwinter demo on offer to the public. As well as scoring a sneak peek at the MMO, you’ll also be guaranteed access to an upcoming beta, which is a pretty sweet deal. Neverwinter, a free-to-play action MMORPG effort from Cryptic Studios based on the classic Dungeons and Dragons property, has not yet been dated beyond early 2013.

I’m still hoping I can get into the beta of this.

Cryptic have what it takes to make a really great game. They do. It’s just that they desperately need focus. They’re all over the place at the moment with Champions and Star Trek Online. And there’s been a lot of reshuffling and restructuring. So I’m not sure whether the Perfect World influence has been a good one or not.

But still, Champions continues to be incredibly fun, even after all this time. And one of the important elements of it is that it isn’t at all a cynical experience. To the contrary, it’s a very generous one. Same for Star Trek Online. They want you to have fun.

Neverwinter has the potential to be something amazingly special. They just have to handle it right, and market it right. The thing with Cryptic is that their games are for a casual audience, one that wants to have fun rather than grind mindlessly. A GW2-style audience, then. But they forget to market their games that way, so people don’t know.

That’s where they shoot themselves in the foot.

I really hope though that Neverwinter proves to be a grand success for them. They deserve it.
