Project Copernicus lead joins SOE’s Vanguard team

Monday, 29th October 2012 23:42 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Ex-38 Studios staffer Steve Danuser has rejoined Sony Online Entertainment. Danuser was part of the Everquest fold before jumping ship to become lead developer on Project Copernicus, the ill-fated MMO based on the Kingdoms of Amalur IP. Happily, SOE seems pleased to have Danuser back following 38 Studios’ closure, as he’s now taken on the role of creative director of Vanguard; read a little about his philosophy and approach to MMOs in a developer profile on Vanguard’s site.

Thanks, Massively.

I really wanted to like Vanguard.

I dug the diplomacy system. Oh did I ever. I can’t tell you how much I did. I mean, it was a system where you could go from place to place without fighting and killing, you could be a diplomat, you could level up via a card game which was built around creating alliances – via a card game. This amused and pleased me. I loved it.

I enjoyed being a vulmane diplomat. But I just couldn’t get over how much the beast races had been shafted, and if I feel that I’m a lower priority and that I’m going to be the runt no matter what, then I’m going to lose interest. The beast races were so low on the priority order that they couldn’t even be bothered to give them tails.

This is compared to Everquest II, where the bestial characters not only have tails, but the armour has all been adjusted to look really good with tails. That pleases me.

Vanguard, we could have gotten along so well… but sadly, I didn’t feel respected at all by Sigil. So I moved on.

    I do miss diplomacy, though.
