Halo 4 – “nothing’s even close” to sequel’s development cost

Friday, 26 October 2012 05:20 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Halo 4 is the most expensive game Microsoft has ever produced.

Speaking with Polygon, Microsoft Studios head Phil Spencer said Halo is a $3 billion franchise.

He described it as the “most important entertainment product in the company” and when asked whether it was also the most expensive, answered: “Absolutely. Nothing’s even close.”

Although Spender didn’t give any indication of how much halo 4 has cost, Joystiq reports Halo 3 cost in the ballpark of $60 million, including marketing. The 2007 release became what was, to date, the fastest-selling game, with $300 million global sales in its first week.

Halo 4, apparently more expensive than this behemoth, is due on November 6, exclusively – of course – for Xbox 360.

after bungies contract with ms was over i was really sceptical about the future of halo…and i am still kind of. it all looks great though and halo 4 really seems to become the best halo yet while bungie are working on their next huge faction based mmofps DESTINY. in the end it was a win win for the gamer i guess.
looks like ms and bungie did part in a rather good way and that´s great.
that said: halo deserves all the praise. it is one of the biggest gaming franchises because it simply is one of the best. it has a great story in a huge and interesting universe and the gameplay is on another level, almost perfect. it is a real game. gameplay is king here. this has become very rare in gaming. in halo though it´s not only insaneley good gameplay, it also tells one of the best stories and the music and atmosphere of the halo games is also beyond words. yes this is mass market, but it´s one of those cases where this is totally deserved. bring on halo sequels and prequels as long as they fit in the universe and feel fresh while keeping what halo makes so great. it will never get old on the mp side anyway. how can you get bored from putting a sticky greande on your opponent, while he´s running away from you, then killing one or two of his teammates too, swordoverkill a whole team or just giving ´em the needler here and there before you are jumping in the next banshee…halo. i love you.

I’m not suprised its the most expensive Mircosoft game yet, you seen the GFX compared to reach? They must have gotten some of the best Engineers around to Stip down the engine and rebuild it the game looks Stunning.
Also if the Cost of all the Live action advertisment and Forward unto dawn are factured in no wonder, the development cost of not only the main game but also the Massive amount of work to put out weekly DLC in the form Spartan Ops.

$60 million including marketing. Considering how expansive marketing is I think the real development cost is much smaller, maybe even close to 50%.

    #8 3 years ago
  9. Kuwabara

58 million marketing, 2 million to make the game. Judging from the latest multiplayer vid the game is just avergage. environment doesn’t look that great, the snow and trees, meh.

@13 I love and appreciate good graphics, whether it’s the art or technical stuff. But i’m sick of people who keep saying how amazing each halo that comes out looks. It looks crap compared to other great looking exclusives. Some of the screenshots of the in game graphics look last gen, and none of the vids look impressive. Anyone show me a link of impressive halo 4 ingame campaign footage please!

    #14 3 years ago
  15. Da Man

Kuwa, H4 screenshots look amazing for current gen, run along and play your scripted corridor tech demos, retard.

I hope Kaz gives you crabs.

    #15 3 years ago
  16. Erthazus

Yeah, they really look amazing for current gen. Like almost no grass, no furniture at all, static trees from 2004. A lot of blur and post processing effects for no reason at all.

and of course my personal favourite: Giant buildings with one-two textures on them and devs are trying to compensate this with “long distance view”.

But whatever really, because for Halo fanboys that plays Halo… Halo 4 is indeed probably next gen… compared to Halo 3 obv. Lol

    #16 3 years ago
  17. polygem

just take the e3 trailer…it does look fantastic. it´s not just hype.
reach is one of the best looking games this gen for sure and it has a timeless look as well. i am pretty sure that it will be more fun to play halo reach 10 years from now than playing killzone 3 with all those snow effects and stuff. they both will look dated but reach will still be more enjoyable because it will have aged much better due to it´s clean look. yea, halo has a much cleaner look and artdesign, that doesn´t make the graphics bad though, and that´s exactly what makes me mad about the halo graphics haters. they fail to see the whole package imho.
you are sick of people saying how amazing each halo game looks, well and i am sick of people praising the shit out of some graphics reference titles but seem to forget that those games lack other stuff or made some weird sacrifices to accomplish those looks. halo achieves great graphics and some of the best, most fluid and therefore fun gameplay in the industry.
(EDIT: if you take a map like spire for example, a multiplayer map, that detailed, that runs smooth as butter, with all those vehicles, elevator portals…it´s over the top really. just compare it to the clunkyness of a battlefield 3. halo is the better multiplayer game AND better looking. technically all the halo games are pretty damn well made.
for halo 4 it looks like they have some of the best engineers in videogaming under contract. the game looks stunning. halo has some of the best animations as well…)

    #17 3 years ago
  18. polygem

@16: i certainly don´t think the more realistic a game looks the more impressive are the graphics. imho this attitude is pretty much 2002.
there´s so much more than that to make a game look stunning or not. do you want a crysis jungle in halo reach multiplayer??? i certainly don´t. the artdesign is perfect as it is with the clean look. it looks great but is not distracting too much from the gameplay/ combat.
killzone 3 mp for example was way too crowded with effects. i think that´s a bad choice in graphic “DESIGN”.

Clean look must have substance. Halo levels are way too huge in my opinion.

“you want a crysis jungle in halo reach multiplayer???”

But it has one in Halo 4. E3 Demo and it looks static and horrible for the jungle.

    #20 3 years ago

    @25

Well you must be blind. Or you’ve only been stuck with an xbox and wii for too long.

Low res textures ( trees, rocks, grass, landscape) blury textures( some of the ground, water). Kinda going the mass effect route, aside from some good particle effects everything else was bad, only hidden back by depth of field and motion blur. Some jaggies here and there. Lighting aint good, and the color palette looks like straight out of metroid prime on the game cube and wii. Nothing detailed or amazing looking, just plain design shown in these screenshot. It’s all been done before but better. For a game releasing this far into the console’s life and that much money invested in, i’d expect something amazing. State of the art engine, at least comparable to other great looking games. Do the graphics need to be that dumbed down to have it run in a certain way.

Are you just a PS3 fanboy trolling or do you genuinely need your vision checked? Have you even looked at the screens? The gameplay? I’m so confused right now as to how you could even remotely think these graphics look dumbed down or last gen in any way, shape, or form.

Halo 4 is one of the most graphically detailed and polished looking games I’ve ever seen, ever. So you are either a liar and a troll, or you truly truly have vision problems and need to head to the eye doctor asap.

Here’s some food for thought, to help prove how massively wrong you are, why don’t you personally find the most detailed Halo 2 screens you can find from last gen, and hold them next to ANY Halo 4 screen.

    There, I’ve fed the troll.

@28 You have got to be the biggest idiot on this site. Halo 4 among the best? lol. Some parts of halo 4 do look early gen, because of poor texture work and bland design in areas, especially multiplayer. The sky and outdoor lighting looks OK, but everything else looks like it has been surpassed 5 years ago. Yes i saw jungle level, but it all looks reused as you move through it, other games have done it better already. It looks like a fusion of haze, halo odst and abit of resistance mixed in to it. I don’t like what ive seen from the enemies so far, it’s all been done before and better! Maybe get your eyes checked, or have you heard of a console other than xbox, maybe ps3?

@27, why would i have a cat? lol. And nice pics you put up, especially the first one, really bad, on par with psp graphics, no ps2.

  33. Erthazus

@polygem, you are a huge fan of Halo franchise and you are on the same boat as Kuwabara with his PS3.

I won’t defend Kuwabara because he is worthless PS3 fanboy and Killzone 3 in the graphical department is a mess with post processing effects with horrible models and poor textures.

But Halo 4 looks not really great. Bland textures. Huge buildings with 1-2 textures on them and devs are trying to compensate this with the “long distance view”. Halo design is not bad at all. Sky is beautiful as always, art style is very nice but graphically it’s not really great. As much as you like Halo, 343 industries have poor engineers.

Look, even their previous games were not in 720p image. Halo 4 (2012) is the first game in the series that has 720p in it (Maybe it’s not. digitalfoundry will show us it’s true colors) and you are saying about Great engineering? Come on. Lol.

    Also, you said that

“killzone 3 mp for example was way too crowded with effects. i think that´s a bad choice in graphic “DESIGN”.”

Yeah. It’s true. Post processing effects all over the place, but now this is happening with Halo 4 :D

“just compare it to the clunkyness of a battlefield 3. halo is the better multiplayer game AND better looking. ”

sorry, what? All Halo’s are not even close to Battlefield or shitty Call Of Duty.
Battlefield for your information first of all not falls in to the running and gunning category. It should feel diferent and it’s physics are very accurate and maps support the gameplay.

Halo is a slow running and gunning gameplay. It’s gameplay is a weak rip off from Unreal Tournament and Quake which were huge in the past and still people play them to this day. Halo is slow.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfF7M6Qxyxk this is played by XIM3 (mouse adapter for Xbox 360) and it shows that the game is clunky as hell and oh yeah AUTOMATIC headshots for the running and gunning game? Well, sorry. Goodbye with “the best shooter evar!”
Halo is slow, clunky with “automatic stuff” and regeneration on it.

    #33 3 years ago
  34. polygem

i am a huge halo fan, sure and i prefer 360 over ps3 but i am not in the same boat as a ps3 drone. i try to be as unbiased as possible but i play games since the 80´s really, so i know what i like and what not. i have an opinion.

As you said: the skyboxes in halo games have ever been fantastic. in halo 4 they look better than ever. that alone speaks volumes about good or bad engineering.
Halo 4 looks crisp and clean, yea, AND extremeley well put together. it´s meant to look that way. it´s not meant to look like crysis and that´s a good thing. it looks like halo. By no means you can see bad engineering here. where the hell do you see it? i certainly can´t. it all looks brilliant. the artdesign, the clean halo look, the animations….i don´t know what you guys are talking about really.

BF3 feels like a clunky mess compared to any halo game.to describe halo as something clunky is just pureley wrong. it is the smoothest shooter experience you can get and you know that. i mean play a conquest game on bf3 and then a round BTB on halo reach. then come back here telling me about smoothness and clunkyness.
halo is not about running and gunning. couldn´t be less about that. maybe you don´t know, but there are tons of vehicles in halo too. just running and gunning in halo would make you extremeley frustrated, you wouldn´t stand a chance. you need several shots to take down shields and then a shot to the head to get the kill. this means a lot of tactical thinking, probably a lot more than many people who don´t play halo can imagine.
halo is more about teamwork and map controll. it is a tactical and very intelligent shooter really.
it´s not slow either. it is a very tactical game even more so depending on gametype.
it is a huge game too. it has the most mp modes and they all work extremeley well and are all very unique. playing Big Team Battle and Infection is a totally different experience than playing oddball or rumblepit or swat and so on.
well then there´s forge….oh yeah and firefight…don´t let me start with spartan ops for halo 4.
halo offers so much more than any – ANY other shooter yet.

some of the best heads in gaming are working to make halo 4 one of the most stunning looking (and sounding by the way) games we have seen on a console.

i don´t care much abou you liking it or not though. if you guys think it´s a shabby game not worth playing. fine. in the end it´s your loss really. keep playing killzone3 or bf3 online then. those aint bad games.
i for one dare to say that halo 4 alone will be totally worth picking up a 360 for.

@33 Erth you idiot, killzone 3 a mess, really? it has some beautiful environments, such as the snow , jungle and space environments, generally consistent except for a few areas maybe.

    @34
I haven’t played halo multiplayer, it may be really good. And yes graphics aren’t necessarily that important, for instance i loved played warhawk, wasn’t concerned about the graphics. I have however played halo 3 and i saw no greatness, mind you i only played single player. And unfortunately i got some motion sickness during that game.. i blamed it on design. My issue here is people who talk about how amazing it looks, visually. It’s been the case since halo 3.I don’t know why halo fans think they can get away with talking about how great it looks, and being among the best. It’s as though they don’t want to accept any faults with the game. The problem with halo is the building or landscapes with one or two textures, being flat, and the color palette. Not looking realistic. And behind it is motion blur and depth of field, which may make a clean looking image, as done in gears and mass effect ,but in reality its just tricks to cover the texture detail and design. There are other games that are clearly ahead in the graphics department. For once i want someone to realize the game looks average, besides erth. When the visual bar keeps getting raised, such as on the ps3, then you look at footage of halo4, it is easy to pick out faults. i would buy a xbox 360 if they can actually make halo 4 look better than any game on that system and have a great campaign mode. You say that halo is intentionally meant to look that way, but when u see in game cinematics or trailers, its shown in a dam cool realistic way. Then in game is different. For a $50 million budget, the game should look mind blowing.

    @Polygem,

“BF3 feels like a clunky mess compared to any halo game.to describe halo as something clunky is just pureley wrong”

For fuck sake. What Battlefield 3 has to do with the running and gunning game i ask you again?

About mechanics? So know this. HALO has simple running and gunning mechanics. That game offers nothing more then other games in it’s genre. There is no strategy, there is nothing, it’s pure shooting in which it fails in comparison compared even to Call Of Duty.
I don’t know about right now, but in the past you could turn yourself by 180 or 360 degree in the multiplayer by using just one button, crazy.

” it is the smoothest shooter experience you can get and you know that.”

Counter-Strike:Global Offensive right now is by far much smoother and without AUTO-AIM.

“halo is not about running and gunning. ”

Now you really don’t even understand the game’s mechanics. AT. ALL.
It is a running and gunning game like TRIBES/Quake, Unreal tournament or Call Of Duty. That does not make it a bad game at all, but the fact that you don’t know what the shooting genre Halo has is hillarious.

“maybe you don´t know, but there are tons of vehicles in halo too.”

Vehicles does not make it a less running and gunning game.

you don’t even know the genre at all. Do you know that Unreal Tournament had vehicles? And it is a running and gunning game.. ahh well, of course you don’t because you never played FPS games then.

    “well then there´s forge….oh yeah and firefight…”

That is an Unreal Tournament 2004 Invasion mode.

Don’t forget that Halo:Reach have Headhunter mode………. Oh yeah, it’s Unreal Tournament 3 mode that is called “Greed”.

“halo is more about teamwork and map controll. it is a tactical and very intelligent shooter really.”

you know what the game is about tactics? ArmA 2-3, Halo is not because it does not have even a basic communication functions or macro buttons for commands.

Even UT and Quake had macros but even they are not very tactical despite some game modes.

Seriously, i won’t continue because you are just a biased Halo fanboy at it’s best form. Good luck man. You are a huge fan of Halo and that is good and helps Microsoft and 343 industries but stop saying that Halo is a Jesus’s work.

@Kuwabara, “Erth you idiot, killzone 3 a mess, really? it has some beautiful environments, such as the snow , jungle and space environments, generally consistent except for a few areas maybe.”

It has shitty post processing effects and generic landscapes with PS2 textures on them.

  37. Da Man

Erzatwat full of it as usual. HR was in 720p.

    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-halo-reach-tech-analysis-article?page=1

(I posted it before, but just like any other topic featuring this nutcase you have to refresh his 2Kb memory).

quote Native resolution for the game remains as per the alpha and beta code we previously analysed – 1152×720, with just a mild horizontal scaling up to 1280 pixels wide that is extremely difficult to detect by eye in most circumstances.

Someone like you, Erza isn’t in the position to say what’s bland textures and what’s not. Just because you are insecure about console fps ruining your existence doesn’t mean you can have an opinion.

Every respectable source agrees that H4 looks spectacular so far, your fabricated walls of bla bla bla are irrelevant.

it’s amazing, isn’t it? Ethazus, who never ever.. programmed anything beyond some university exercises, states that 343 has ‘poor engineers’. What’s sad is how he actually believes he can have that kind of opinion.

    Haloperidol, fast.

polygem, this neurotic is merely butthurt that Cliffy B being a generic hack that he is, stole Marathon’s King of The Hill and called it Domination subsequently.

Hence now this insane person tries to trick his mind into fabricating something about Halo games.

It’s gameplay is a weak rip off from Unreal Tournament and Quake
    Sad isn’t it?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EQtYmD7Tw0

Erthazus is insane and he’s in denial. Much like he is with any other subject.

  39. Da Man

    Also

    A bit off-topic, but

this is an excellent example demonstrating denial. Nerd actually thought he was right, as usual.

Lmao. Keep fighting the fight, Erthazus. I look forward to the tech analysis of H4 from DF in November. I’m sure they’ll agree with you.

    #39 3 years ago
  40. polygem

    this is definiteley denial. true.
erth, like i said, i play games since the 80´s and i promise you that i played quake, doom and unreal like a maniac back in the days. you are the one who should do the homework first. seriously. you are pretendig stuff that just isnt there. it´s kinda weird really.

  41. bitsnark

After seeing the playthrough of one of the campaign missions (I don’t think it was shown before then) at the EG Expo, I was pretty well fucking blown away by the advancements they’ve made with that engine.

Graphically, H4 is some serious shit.

  44. OlderGamer

Fellas, you can’t play graphics. I am just going to remind you the gameplay is where it counts. Next to high end PC, yes this gens consoles stink. But that isn’t the point. Sure some game have better graphics on PS3. But that isn’t the point. And yes some game run smoother on xb360. But, again, that isn’t the point.

It is just a video game, if you want to play it, good for you. If you don’t want to play, leave people alone that do. If you don’t like Halo, this entire thread is mute for you.

It would be like me trying to break down the subtle differences in CoD games or in FIFA games. I don’t play them. I don’t like them. But I don’t put down players that do.

    #44 3 years ago
  45. Dragon246

For someone who plays mostly on PC, its not surprising that most console games look shit. PC had, has and always will have the best graphics.

Also in the end, all games mentioned here sell millions. They must have something good in them due to which such large numbers of gamers pledge their loyalty to it.

    #45 3 years ago
  46. Erthazus

@Tardman, thanks for proving my point cause you know it’s not in 720p image. It’s 1152×720 FACT.

1152×720 is not 720p. You can launch every PC game for example and choose 720p and everything that is below 1280×720 is not HD. Simple fact.

    Next,

    “Every respectable source”

Like your shitty Halo fanboy blogs or IGN? M’kay. They also say that CoD looks specacular and every game is 9/10

“who never ever.. programmed anything beyond some university exercises, states that 343 has ‘poor engineers’. ”

So what? That means i can’t have an opinion? Fact is that guys could not make a new engine for the game until Halo:Reach and it is still not in 720p. this is bad engineering at it’s best and you can say anything you want here really.

@polygem, “erth, like i said, i play games since the 80´s”

That’s why you called Halo an intelligent shooter and not a running and gunning game. Brilliant. I don’t play games since 80s that’s for sure, but I know genres and I know FPS games definetily better than you. But something tells me that you are lying.

@Dragon246, “For someone who plays mostly on PC”

and PS3 and I can’t wait for Dust 514 from CCP.

    #46 3 years ago
  47. Night Hunter

@46: Well, maybe he called Halo an intelligent shooter because it is. The enemies are pretty smart after all. ;)

In fact I can’t recall many FPS/TPS which are more intelligent when it comes to kicking your ass. Crysis, maybe, or F.E.A.R. But other than that …

You do know though, that run and gun is actually a sub-genre of Shoot ‘Em Ups, right, Metal Slug and the like. Those games that you mentioned, aren’t they all Arena Shooters?

    #47 3 years ago
  48. Da Man

^Unfortunately for you, as DF eloquently stated

quote difficult to detect by eye in most circumstances.

And DF>your uneducated hysteria. You are irrelevant, patient.

As for your angsty objections, of course you can’t. For starters, you can check out this very comment section, since anyone on this website was caught telling lies and/or bs less than you.

Fact is, even Odst was graphically noticeably superior to H3, besides their AI has always been superior to almost anything similar. Their engineers included industry defining people like Jason Jones and Natalya Tatarchuk, whose papers on r&d you couldn’t possibly decipher with the help of your university rector.

Unfortunately for you, ‘at it’s best’ is another demonstration of your equally pathetic attempts at conveying non-existent points in engrish. hence, on the contrary you can continue to agonize between Halo comment sections and 500 hours on videogames you hate.

Erzatwat, did you ever notice that your walls of misspelled bla bla bla could all be summed up in one sentence. Like so:

@erth: maybe i am just not half as much nitpicking as you are. who tells you that you know shooters better than me? your own ego i suppose. i am 36 and i play games since i was a kid. in some years more in others less. i don´t care if you believe that or not. a friend of mine who i also played in bands with works at crytek these days as an audio engineer. we all played games a lot without becoming pc nerds arguing about bullshit noone cares about. i switched to consoles pretty early. we played games because we loved playing games no matter which genre or platform. thats what i am still doing these days. don´t give me that smart ass shit please. running and gunning genre…haha that stuff is hilarious dude and it´s not making you an expert, not at all. you said halo stole from UT. you know the shooter genre really well. in the early 90´s i was a teen, twen and i still played on pc a lot…you really don´t have to tell me about those games but you sure have forgotten to namedrop others here. halo IS an intelligent shooter and halo 4 looks stunning.

    EDIT:
if you really are loving games and shooters only half as much as you pretend to do, then i really cannot understand that you don´t play halo. it makes no sense. but it goes further. you do not play it but you say you still are an expert for it…but it goes even further than that. you don´t play it, you are an expert and your conclusion is that it´s an ugly looking shit UT clone running and gunning game which is really slow. i don´t understand a word but i really don´t think that´s my fault. well, you can babble about that and plater the internet with pseudo proof like a madman. still repeating shit does not turn it into gold.

@49, You lose credibility when you say the game looks stunning. Can’t you just say it looks decent. I’ve seen every single game play footage from E3 to EG expo and i havn’t seen anything “STUNNING” yet. Would you like to post a link to footage i may have missed that will make my eyes drop.

It was amusing for a little while but it’s become seriously predictable and tedious now.

  53. Dragon246

    @Erth
No offence. I only meant console games don’t stand a chance against their pc compatriots.
And I agree with you on dust 514. I haven’t been as excited for a game for a long time as I am for dust. The concept is awesome and I believe ccp would make the best fps available for consoles. Eve universe is easily the best setting for a fps. No other game can match that imo.

  54. Kuwabara

@53 Amusing am i? Because i am stating my opinion from my observation. I am sorry if i put a halt on your halo 4 hype train, but when someone says how amazing it looks, i want the proof. Too many fan boys hold halo so dear to their heart they can’t accept any criticism.

  56. Kuwabara

@56, irk? call me what you like but atleast im honest with my facts. i would have stopped along time ago but i keep hearing how great the graphics are. That ” irs” me. Another thing that irs me is the money they spend on advertising and showing off cg cinematics yet can’t produce amazing graphics.

  57. polygem

kuwabara: just google it yourself man, there´s no damn need to give you links to prove things with facts. i already tried but you are in denial. saying halo 4 isn´t a good looking game is just pure denial. what is there to proof. everyone with a healthy mind would agree about this.
i believe you are the kind of ps3 fan that doesn´t own a 360. if halo was on the ps3 you would praise the shit out of it for being the best shooter ever. trust me, you would and you know that. now be honest to yourself and don´t plaster your shit on here and then even complain if people call you out to be the mad man you obviously are…it´s pathetic.

@ 58 I’m not talking about gameplay and how good it does as a shooter, i said so called stunning graphics people seem to be dreaming about. So back your shit up. I already said the sky box looks good, but that’s it. I saw your vid. I personally think the explosions should look a lot better. And the textures and everything else looks ordinary. Nothing stunning though don’t you think? I won’t be buying an xbox for this because of the potential that could be made to this game isn’t quiet there. Even from what ive seen of the enemies and gameplay, i don’t see this at game of the year material. Only time will tell.
