Shuhei Yoshida, Sony’s worldwide studios boss, has explained why the PS Store operates on a multi-regional system instead of one single entity such as Xbox Live.
Speaking in the comments section on the PS Blog Yoshida explained why there are sometimes huge disparities between the content offered on the service’s US, EU and Japan stores.
“There are both positives and negatives in the current regional approach, and I admit I have 3 PSN IDs for Japan, US and Europe, ” said Yoshida.
“Managing multiple small countries with multiple languages is much more inefficient than managing a large single country. You should be careful what you wish for. If you want all regions managed by one perspective, one view of the largest country, then you are not in for a good ride.
“Having strong regional representation with regional operation is a great thing to be able to cater to the needs of the market.”
PlayStation owners in Europe have long lamented the differences in content between the regions, and due to each Sony division operating independently, the store released vary by region.
The most notable content disparities of late were Retro City Rampage, and the absence of Valve’s Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. The Walking Dead: Episode 4 – Around Every Corner was also released in the US a week before it was released on PSN in Europe.
