Wii U will support in-game chat, but only through licensed headsets
To use in-game chat in those few Wii U games which support the feature, you’ll need a headset plugged into the Game Pad – even when you’re not using the controller.

Nintendo told Kotaku that “select games” including Assassin’s Creed 3, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and Mass Effect 3 will support in-game chat.
Rather than utilising the Game Pad’s built-in mic, chat requires a licensed stereo headset from Turtle Beach or Mad Catz plugged into the Game Pad; there’s no jack on the Pro Controller which is likely to be the input method of choice for serious multiplayer fans.
Nintendo has given no indication of a wireless headset option any time soon, and has not implemented universal support for in-game chat.
The Wii U launches worldwide in November and December; get full launch details here.

@4 – Don’t worry. He’s just buying time before he finds a way to try to turn this into a positive. I’m sure pretty soon it’ll be “Why would anyone want to play with anything but the GamePad, anyway?”

@6: LOL
this truly blows. i certainly don“t want to buy another audio system!
i have 3 consoles hooked to the tv atm and the least thing i need is another headset lying around.
@5: there never was such a thing like people defending nintendo for the sake of defending them…only for good reasons, which there are plenty of, or if people piss over them with the kids games argument or other crap which just needs to be clarified. your imagination is running riot again here i guess.

Well this is massively foolish.
The thing has a mic on it but you have to buy another mic? foolish
There’s no wireless headset support of any type? foolish
Having to use “Licensed” products? foolish
It absolutely has to plug in to a controller you’re not necessarily using as opposed to directly hooking up to the console? foolish

@6 – I’d say it’s been way longer than 2006. I’d say it was since the moment they decided to stick with cartridges instead of CD’s, back with the N64.

This isn’t important. No one is going to use the pro controller on launch anyway.
Everyone will be preoccupied using the sweet tablet controller to play NIntendoland anyway. I’m also sure that you’ll be able to use unlicensed options too, seeing as its just going to be a mic. Prob similar to PS3.

Sooo…
…being able to use voice chat in-game isn’t important?
Is that what you’re trying to say?

I think this is more important than the have-to-be-plugged-into-gamepad story:
“has not implemented universal support for in-game chat”
So I can’t chat to one of my friends when we’re both online? Does this mean there’s no party system either?
This was hinted at before (with Nintendo saying it was up to third parties to implement online), but I didn’t they they were that clueless.

The online will probably suck, now that all doubts are blown away .
A system with 3 sets of controllers (each working separately) and a non-unified online and no trophies/achievements. Yup, next 6 months will be amazing to watch, hearing how desperately NDF will try to spin this into something positive, but cant.

@17:
What this means is that Nintendo’s ‘new’ online system is as half baked and last-gen as it ever was.
Only a “select” group of titles are going to have something as basic as voice chat??
What a joke.
What makes it even more ridiculous is the token Miiverse, which is supposed to be some sort of serious attempt at a decent online system, where you can read people’s noobie questions about which button makes Mario jump, or something like that.
No wonder Elite doesn’t work! Don’t expect basic features from PS360 games to be available on Wii U any time soon.

@19, Say that to Sony with their PS3 when that brick launched for 600$ without anything.
@20, have you ever thought beyond your Call Of Duty fanboyism and Nintendo-hate that Elite can’t be launched there when WiiU have no decent CoD fanbase not to mention that Elite supports old CoD’s which again WiiU does not support. First of all Elite must offer decent value to the player which right now it can’t do obv on WiiU.
For your info, WiiU has more memory to support any current gen online infrastructure better than the competition right now.
But whatever really, your brain is infected with Latvia and Call Of Duty anyway.

I was just responding in that way for Clupulas benefit.
This is pretty shitty if it’s the only way it’ll work.
It’s more likely it will change over time. There putting a lot into mii verse so they prob want people to use that at launch, it’s still a strange choice though.
Im pretty sure a wireless headset will be available pretty soon after launch to use with the pro controller.

Ur, you’ve nothing to back up either of those statements. Sony never added cross-title voice chat to PS3. They would’ve announced a wireless headset to use with the pro if it existed, no?

No, but there’s it’s not a problem from a technical perspective, that’s the difference.
I think it’d be good to wait and see what features Mii Universe has before getting your panties in a twist.
There’s some obvious steps in the right direction with the online on the 3DS and things like Unity on the Wii U.
Also a COD developer thinks you can use any headphone with a MIC, that hasn’t been confirmed, but NIntendo would want you to use licensed products anyway, so it’s prob true.

Because it easily contains enough memory to get cross game chat working.
Judging by the video that G1GAHURTZ just posted, it looks like the tablet pad and Miiverse is the main focus for a while.

Btw, Kotaku speculate that the reason for wired headsets is that wireless ones may interfere with the gamepad signal, as it has a whole load of data to send. Way more than a normal controller.
If that’s the case, then you can forget about any official wireless controllers.

Iwata looks like he knows that the video!
I bet their crapping their pants at Nintendo Network, I hope their ready for a metric shit-ton of:
Cock and Balls
F-Bombs
Swastika’s
Pictures of Mario banging Peach
etc.. etc..
Maybe we should have a VG247 competition:
Who can get the first classic ‘cock and balls’ picture on Miiverse!?
