Nintendo 3DS software sales up 89% on last year

Nintendo 3DS game sales are booming, according to the latest figures revealed by the company. Among the biggest hitter are Mario Kart 7, Kid Icarus: Uprising and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D.

Recent marquee release New Super Mario Bros. 2 has sold over 295,000 in its second month, and joins Mario Kart 7, Star Fox 64 3D, Kid Icarus: Uprising and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D as games that have all seen a recent increase in sales. However, Nintendo did not mention specific numbers.

Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing, said of the statement, “Nintendo 3DS XL continues to galvanize our Nintendo 3DS business. Hardware sales are up, software sales are increasing exponentially and the attach rate is growing stronger every month.”

“With a great slate of upcoming games, including Paper Mario: Sticker Star, which arrives exactly one month from today, we like our position heading into the crucial holiday selling season.”

So software sales are up 89% but other numbers are thin on the ground. Is this announcement from Nintendo too vague? Do you want to see actual numbers? Share your thoughts below.

While some people laugh at statements like “Nintendo isn’t competing with (insert platform holders name here)” This is an example.

What are the actual comparison periods? I.e. when are we comparing to when?

@2 Did you read the article properly – not being cheeky – because I did call the stat into question myself. I said that the details are sketchy at best.

I mean they operate in their own self contained world. The trends, ups and downs of other platforms don’t directly impact them.

Yeah, wondered whether there is a context I was missing though. I noticed you said you had no numbers. Just asking if you knew what the actual comparison was aside from raw figures. This month in 2011 to this month 2012? Up to October 2011 to up to October 2012? Given the extra numbers of machines sold since October 2011 I expect software to sales to have grown by more than 89% – but they aren’t clear on what the comparison is.

Errr didn’t 3DS launch last year.

Software sales for a machine which struggled until the price drop up 89 percent? Unbelievable.
