PS3: 5 million consoles sold in the UK

Thursday, 11 October 2012 09:22 GMT By Dave Cook

Sony has sold more than five million PS3 consoles in the UK alone, the company can reveal.

MCV reports that Sony UKs managing director Fergal Gara said, “It is fantastic that we passed the 5m mark. But most importantly to me is not the milestone itself, but the fact that there is momentum behind it. And with the new chassis, and the way the market is panning out this year, PlayStation definitely has the momentum.”

On the subject of Sony’s ever-expanding family of execs from around the business, Gara continued, “I am pleased with the talent we’ve got on board. You can actually feel the energy going through the business.”

“These guys know that they have a lot to do to make sure the Christmas plans are sharp and focused, and they have come to them relatively late. So they are working at a hell of a pace. I can already feel a positive buzz that wasn’t there only a few weeks ago.”

It comes after Sony released its new PS3 Super Slim model, which rejuvenated the UK retail sector when it launched September 28th, bumping up PS3 sales in the UK by 138% – a large leap we’re sure you’ll agree.

Sony’s acquisition of Gaikai also points to a potentially earth-shaking direction for the company, as the cloud-streaming company’s new website suggests. The relaunched portal is full of Sony IP, hinting at bigger things to come.

With how Sony are championing the success of their new even slimmer models, I get the feeling I won’t be seeing the PS4 till crimbo 2015 :-(

    Wait a minute, only 5 million…
Wait, and they sold 1 million in Russia, yet they shit all over it and Eastern Europe overall when it comes to content and services. I thought in UK they sold like 20 millions, hence they only care about UK. Well, turns out SCEE are simply genuine assholes.

On a side note, Europe overall was always biggest Sony market. Yet it now gets worst content by far, UK included. Vita games are just plain not getting released for example. Something is fucked up at Sony…

    #5 3 years ago
  6. mistermogul

Yeah traditionally Europe (UK in particular) are Sony’s strongest markets so this is no surprise.

However their “sold” figures usually represent sold into supplier/retail channel, not to the consumer. I wonder which this 5 million refers to?

When companies champion the fact that their sales have increased 138%, it’s a highly irrelevant statistic unless actual sales totals are given. While 138% increase sounds impressive – it’s not if only 100 PS3′s where sold in the first place…

@1 ps3 is still in the lead idiot. Oh you forgot about the 1 year lead didint you. No other console can do what sony has done and sell that many consoles till date being so expensive from release date, and while reduced over the eyars still more expensive than other consoles. I’d like to see xbox 720 sell even half of what ps3 has managed if it follows the same price tag as sony over the years.

@10 You delusional nob head, It’s because of the established user base That ps3 managed to sell well while being expensive! And you are actually brining the wii into this.. lol. neither sony or nintendo can achieve what sony did with the same conditions. If the situation was reversed the xbox would be so far behind, infact it would be dead. But your too stupid to comprehend that playstation is the most recognised console brand name worldwide. The only reason why xbox 360 outsells ps3 in usa is because of the cheap 4 gig version. But world wide who keeps leading week by week? ps3 you idiot.

@12 you still buthurt over the god of war/twisted metal arguement? get over it. Am i wrong for arguing the console race when an idiot xbox 360 fanboy brings it up?

  16. Da Man

^Just to piss you off, deluded fanboy… (obviously)

YOU ARE WRONG. PS3 IS IN THE LAST PLACE AND NEXT GEN WILL BE THE LAST FOR SONY. YOU KNOW IT’S TRUE.

Their brand is steadily dying, and the only reason (in addition to customer zealosy) PS3 outsold 360 in past years is the blu-ray player.

    #16 3 years ago
  17. Ireland Michael

@15 My favourite games of this gen of consoles are all exclusive to the PS3 or Wii.

    #17 3 years ago
  18. Da Man

Just imagine what would happen if Ps2 didn’t launch before Xbox..

No Gta timed exclusivity, all titles multiplatform..

With superior online and durability, Xbox would’ve easily grinded Ps2 into dust..

    Not even joking.

Ps3 half-arsed ‘success’ is an industry misunderstanding, a sad customer miscalculation. All based on predecessors’ marketshare.

Oh well, as soon as Ps4 pulls a second ‘Vita’ it’s all over anyway.

Hmm, pointless question, I wouldn’t expect an insane person to be aware of their condition. Seriously buddy, seek help.

    #21 3 years ago
  22. zinc

@20, You raise interesting points, especially regarding “customer zealously”, I mean you sound quite zealous yourself :-)

Brand loyalty has saved PS3, its late start, high price & hacking scandal, would have killed a lesser brand. And Sony are actively buying loyalty, with their game giveaways. Not many will be willing to jump ship if they know their getting 24+ games a year for £30.

MS have North America. That’s a given. Plus they are ruthless when it comes to exclusives and I expect to see more of that. Also it’s *common knowledge* that theirs is the best online service, so when it cones to streaming content, who you gonna trust?

Now Ninty is a hard one. Yes it’s got the franchises, but that didn’t help the GameCube and how many people have a Wii just sitting in the cupboard? But seeing as almost every other house has a ds of some kind, brand familiarity should see them ok.

    #22 3 years ago
  23. Da Man

I bet if it was Apple instead of Sony written there, you would politely ignore me.

    That’s what’s insane tbh.

    I think you’re a sad person though.

“Fanboy” & “butthurt” are 2 of the most ridiculous and juvenile words in existence…

    Pat <3 Apple

    #25 3 years ago
  26. Christopher Jack

@23, How so? Your comment would make a little more sense if it were aimed at Apple given their current status but I’d still think you’re insane hating that people enjoy things that you yourself cannot enjoy. I guess it’k okay to hate a product or brand but insulting their owners because you see them as below you due to your superiority complex is awfully pathetic.

@24, Agreed, especially on ‘butthurt’, it’s the troll’s defense mechanism in their attempt to defend their insane jibber-jabber.

    #26 3 years ago
  27. Da Man

Hmm, I think you’re insane since Apple are currently the most valued company. But hey.

Wipe the tears now, Playstation is dying and everyone knows it.

As for hating, hating what and insulting whom? I said that the established brand obv helped the sales.

As I said, you really are a sad person. You really give a shit about Sony.

    #25 Lol.

    #27 3 years ago
  28. Christopher Jack

@27, I really don’t give a shit about any manufacturer, I of course like or dislike some more than others but unlike you, I don’t go into every article saying “hail Apple!” or “Sony sucks”. I know you really don’t say that but you may as well, I mean you rushed into this article as an attempt to troll.

    #28 3 years ago
  29. Dragon246

Dudes, why are you feeding trolls here. They live on replies. Ignore them and they will vanish.
Despite major missteps early, I think sony has done a great job in regaining much of the goodwill it lost. Now, if they dont commit the mistakes again (which they wont probably), they can regain the lead next-gen.
Also ps3 will overcome 360 in sales in 1-2 years. But replicating ps or ps2 sales will be difficult.

    #29 3 years ago
  30. Da Man

I also don’t go into every article. if I really were a troll, and wanted to do that, there’s an excellent opportunity to troll yet another maintenance a few posts down the page.

Also, Sony zealots ‘ve been preaching about Ps3 ‘overcoming’ Xbox for about 4 years. It’s not going to happen.

    #30 3 years ago
  31. Christopher Jack

@30, It will happen but Microsoft will still have “won” from software sales, kinect, Gold subscriptions, etc

    #31 3 years ago
  32. Da Man

Nope, not going to materialize. X360 isn’t going to be discontinued because there’re no fees to pay and no rush like with the original. it’s going to live a healthy, long life, probably coming close to PSX lifetime figures eventually.

  33. monkeygourmet

They didn’t make the same mistakes with the Vita… Oh wait…

    #33 3 years ago
  34. Christopher Jack

The Wii’s the only home console that will get close to the PS1. The difference between the 360 & PS3 isn’t even a couple million, if it weren’t for Halo 4, the PS3 may have been able to close that gap by the end of the year. I expect Sony to have overtaken the 360 by the first quarter of next year, Q2 by the latest. I also expect the PS3 to have some life in it after the PS4′s been released, heck I believe the PS2 is still being manufactured.

    #34 3 years ago
  35. Da Man

What? PS1 sold 100 million in a decade.. Wii is currently about the same being six years old (same as PS2).. It’s going to sell about the same as PS2, if any.

    Expect the unexpected!

Show me a link which says the current difference in figures.

    #35 3 years ago
  36. Kuwabara

@30 You have shit for brains and a skull as thick as rock! If you are going to to talk about a race, any race, it has to be legitimate! If you want to assess how well a console has done compared to other consoles, you look at the sales from when it ENTERED the competition and what it has achieved in the same time frame as another console. But you love ignoring the 1 year head start from xbox. You are trying to say xbox 360 has sold more and so is better, but the reality ps3 is leading the sales in the time frame ps3 has been out. But because you have no brain you will ignore this, again. And you can’t put the wii in the same category , it’s not like ps2 vs gamecube here. the wii is much less powerfull than xbox 360/ps3, and cheaper , so it will sell more.

The majority of sales this gen i believe was due to pricing, and not people knowing what console does what. And you say ps is dying? lol. Firstly the only thing driving the xbox sales right now is the kinect bundle packs and 4 gig version. without them ill bet they’d barely hit 20000 sales for the week. Again everything comes down to pricing. Now imagine a $50 cheaper ps3, and you can say bye bye to xbox 360. All sony needs to do is lower the 12 gig console to the price of a 4 gig xbox 360 and match the bundle. When it comes to next gen, ps4 will be in the same price range as xbox 720, and obviously will take the world wide lead, even in the US. Not only that but a great majority of current xbox 360 owners who are sick of kinect and not getting exclusives will make a shift over to ps4, if they aren’t already doing so for ps3. By the end of each year ps4 will be ahead by a few million. So as for ps4 dying , keep dreaming. What else will the ps4 have that is keeping xbox 360 players or willing buyers away from ps3? cross game chat.

That is reality, ps4 will dominate world wide even more so than this gen. It’s not possible for sony to emulate the success it had on ps2, because of the xbox. I would love to see ps4 release for around $499/599, but because of xbox which will ship cheaper consoles. It’s sad majority of people wont pay that bit of extra for something really great. It’s because of the xbox the ps4 won’t be what it could be.

    @36
I may not share your optimism completely as I am yet to see the next-gen offerings, but you may be completely right.
Although whatever you said about present-gen is completely true, and these are the very facts sony haters blissfully ignore.
MS and Ninty trolls just like to shit on sony cuz their brands arent so hot now.
Smear campaign as they say :)

Kuwa, you just keep telling me how Wii isn’t a current gen console and how it has nothing to do with this. It doesn’t take a genius to see what you have instead of erm, brains..

PS2 was miles behind Xbox in terms of graphical power, so it was practically last gen’s Wii, deluded tool

PS3 is in the third place, fact. In spite of what your unstable, handicapped imagination is painting right now. It really is the last one. Wii is in the lead, and 360 is in the second place.

    If if if.

    if Xbox launched before Ps2.

If Nintendo wouldn’t cancel the Snes cd add-on.

If your mom was your dad she would have a pair of balls.

You are tragically wrong and so is your devoted Sony friendo.

By the way, is Phill Harrison a Sony hater and an xbot now that he jumped ship? No, this is a question.

Since you call anyone who disses Sony ‘trolls’ I figure he might as well be called a traitor. Funnily enough, if someone posts ignorant bullshit complimenting some Sony pos, you never call him out. Do you have Sony branded clothes and only eat at a Sony sponsored restaurant? Do you have Ken Kutaragi’s picture in your room?

    I bet yo do.

As for PS brand, you only have to look at the massively failed piece of shit called PSV. Sales speak for themselves. It’s a dying brand of a struggling company.

If PlayStation died it wouldn’t be because of people abandoning the brand. PlayStation is still the most profitable arm of Sony, despite being *Third*.

From what I hear it’ll be the Bravia Tv’s, tablets & other ventures that would drag Sony down, and PlayStation with them.

    PS2:

    - inferior online (even Dc which came before beat it, let alone Xbox)

    - inferior graphics (even Dc which came before had anti-aliasing, let alone GCN/Xbox)

-inferior interface (even Dc which came before had a proper dashboard)

It was last gen’s Wii and a piece of shit (but that’s beside the point).

    Your bullshit criteria is irrelevant.

@41 like i said the shit for brains ignores the 1 year head start and is in denial, lol. Open ur eyes and check the charts for yourself, as usual ps3 leading worldwide week in week out! hard ware wise, now look at world wide software and you will see ps3 at number 1! and as for ps2 being so called vastly inferior to xbox, no game on xbox tops mgs3 or god of war 2, both on gamecube or xbox.
Let me guess when ps3 , next year, is “officially” ahead in sales, even though xbox 360 had a year infront, are you going to commit suicide?

You don’t make reality, reality made you, hence you should just admit that you were born full of shit, Kuwa.

Mgs2 looks as good as late 90s PC games. And so does Mgs3 but with a shitty fake blurry filter. Riddick, Halo, KotoR or Fable and a dozen of other titles look better than that retardation. God of War doesn’t even touch the aforementioned too.

God of War.. oh dear. Come back to me when Ps2 will be able to run Big Team Battle in Halo2, idiotic person.

But please do continue to post random excuses for corporate failures.

I can’t wait for Sony hardware to go the way of Dodo, I bet you and your POSLifestyle buddies will have a rocking good time playing your shitty teh bosses dramas on evil anti-bushido Xboxes.

Next year you’re going to spend your shitty existence commenting on Xbox threads, as usual. Waiting for your mentally handicapped fantasies to materialize. You really are a nutcase, Kuwa. You really are.

    @46?

@47 Idiot. Mgs3 is the best looking title last gen and one of the best games ever made! Also read the reviews and awards god of war 2 won for graphics. Nothing on xbox comes close to mgs3 greatness.

Now mr AntiSony tell me why sales means so much to you. The ps3 lost market share due to the much cheaper wii and xbox 360 as another added competitor. So what? But your logic is flawed anyway. So you would rather a hyundai over a ferrari because it sells more? did you lose money with sony shares? You already won’t admit ps3 has sold better than xbox 360. You don’t care that ps3 has better hardware than xbox 360, or that it has better exclusives. Do you even game at all and care about exclusives?

Keep wasting your time away on cod and kinect. you know nothing about true gaming and what really matters. Keep riding your cheap hyundai.

    #48 3 years ago
  49. Da Man

    No it isn’t.

It’s shit, and it looks like shit too. It just has a fake blurry filter, which makes everything hard to see. It’s not even close to being one of the best looking. Not to mention the abysmal framerate. Besides there’re plenty of Xbox videogames rated the same or better. And that has nothing to do with graphics. God Of War winning awards for best looking ps2 games doesn’t take away the fact the machine was about as good as a 1999 PC.

They don’t, and I’m indifferent. I don’t like clunky hardware and shitty products, both of which can be found amongst MS and Sony portfolio. A better question would be why you whiny little fanboy react to anything remotely Sony dissing, and why keep on posting bullshit using several accounts only to call me anti-Sony.

It’s no Ferrari vs Hyundai. It’s a clumsy piece of shit with unnecessary blu-ray drive, inferior online, inferior Gpu, inferior dev tools and almost everything.

@49, now you’ve pissed me off!! If that’s how your going to be, ok. We’ll play your way. Firstly , it’s an embarrassment for microsoft that ps3 is averaging more sales than xbox 360, considering the year head start it had and how expensive ps3 has been since launch. Too add further insult, the piece of shit rushed hardware xbox 360 came out with to get a head start on sony was so poorly executed, that almost every single xbox 360 red ringed and died!! almost every person who bought a xbox 360 has had to rebuy it 2,3,4, 5 times!! LOL. thats why the sales is soo bullshit, you want an actual figure of what xbox 360 has sold to date, divide it by 3. That’s great hardware for you isn’t it.

You talk about about xbox 360 having a better gpu yet the best 5 looking games this gen are all on ps3, or even top 10!!

And ass for the blu ray player, i have no faults with it and the movies i watch on it is so clear and great! And as for online, i never had to complain about lag! in the end what matters is the exclusives and xbox 360 fails big time. All u got to do is look at the direction theyve gone from a few years ago. They repeat the same bullshit and do a 360 back to where they started, 0, shit, nothing. Halo gears halo gears with a bit of forzaaa and now lets milk everyone with the same shit and kinect to wow people. Wow this is a great hardcore gaming system we have here. All you have to do is look at how geeky don mattrick looks every time he steps on stage to know where xbox 360 is headed towards, lol. I picture u looking like Mr mattrick knowing nothing about great games.

The future of xbox 360 looks like shit, when it comes to gaming. bungie left halo, cliffy b is gone, what is there left?? as for sony we still got quite a few first party studios/3rd party making games with key players still there!! Have fun with halo 5, gears 5, forza 5 next gen. I wont bother mentioning fable, sorry. :)

Kuwa, have you ever considered that PS4 could fail? if it does, what will happen to you :( ?

You might want to accompany your angry assertions in regards to red rings with links, otherwise it’s hard to believe since my 2008 Falcon is still rockin’.

Besides, Ps2 was such an abysmal hardware joke that rrod doesn’t even come close to that pathetically lame dvd-drive and the infamous Dres.

So you might want to divide those 150 million by four, buddy. I myself had to replace the piece of shit.

No they are not on PS3, unless you consider tech demos disguised as videogames as such.

Bungie didn’t leave, most of 343i are ex-Bungie employees, even key ones.

    Ignorance is bliss, Kuwa.

@52, a falcon, wow, so you are an aussie like me. strewth!! raise your standards, don’t be a bogan!!

I had a ps2, not one problem ever. Nor do i know anyone with a ps2 that had it replaced.
Are you actually going to sink this low and say xbox 360 has the best looking games?? lol. enough of this madness already. That is the biggest insult so far. The best looking game on xbox 360 is either gears 2 or 3, and that is easily beaten by games on the ps3. im not even going to list them, because you will make an excuse for it, some how. The internet and everyone else but you knows already the best looking games are on ps3.

    #54 3 years ago
  55. Da Man

I’m not an aussie, and the Falcon sits in another house. I have a black slim 360. I just know that it still works.

@51: i only did read your post yet i must admit, but i have to respond to that before i read any further:

“in the end what matters is the exclusives and xbox 360 fails big time”

    speak for yourself please.

i enjoyed almost every ps3 exclusive but there is nothing like halo on the ps3. mario galaxy and skyward sword are in the same league for being true timeless classic videogames, but while i enjoyed the UC and resistance games. i´d still say ms won in the exclusives department. why? the gears and halo sales compared to the UC or KZ sales prove them right.

i am having no hate for the ps3. i had a psone and 2 as well, but this gen the wii and the 360 have been the winners for sure (if you really wanna do that consolewars stuff – thought that´s so 5 years ago)

ms did a lot of stuff right, better pad, better system structure, better online, better interface, better marketplace and so on….you are right. everything sony had to offer was more exclusives, i don´t think that´s enough though. competiton got tougher. sony kinda underestimated things. i am really curious about what they´ll come up with for ps4. right now i really see them being the weakest of the big 3. they are in the most uncomfortable situation.

    @58,
If you really think sales make a game great or not, then you are completely wrong. Ps3 beats 360 and wii hands down on exclusives. There is sameness is 360 exclusives that I would say wii ones share too. But not ps3 ones. KZ3, Resistance, GOW, Infamous, LBP, Heavy Rain, UC,MGS4, GT5 and many more. Variety and quality of ps3 exclusives is unmatched, with them having the best rated first party dev this gen. And its a must have for a japanese gaming fan.Best japanese games are on it.
And also for single player games. Most 360 exclusives deform into an empty shell if you take out the multiplayer. Ps3 beats everything else convincingly there.

since this discussion is about who “won” this gen. sales ARE important though. this is a business isn´t it?

i love some of the sony ip´s. i said that many many times. i aprecciate the variety on the ps3…but in the end i believe the xbox360 is still the better videogame machine. that´s not making me a troll by the way….

Also for naysayers, some solid hard true facts (courtesy vgchartz)-
    NA EU Japan Total(this week)
    Ps3- 57,427 106,047 44,511 246,225
    360- 88,090 48,532 4,575 155,110
    wii- 17,586 14,348 4,356 40,295

    So much ps dying.
It sounds laughable when nelson comes bitching that they had half of us market, when ps3 has DOUBLE the sales of wii and 360 combined in eu.

  65. Dragon246

    @Poly
I was referring to trolls here, you are not in it. You will know who is trolling by reading comments.
About sales, lets compare how much is spent on a halo than say a KZ, much more. It needs more sales for the same profit. Most ps3 exclusives are in 2-3 million range or more, which isnt bad at all.
Also if sales is mentioned, then I posted something earlier. Read it.
And about wii and 3ds, I own none. But I played the best of wii on my friends console, and I was glad not to buy it as motion control sucks (move and kinect sucks too, but kinect is an awesome tech). Ps3 is the only home console still receiving awesome amounts of japanese support. And I owned a japanese ds just to play japanese games, but seeing ninty region locking again, I wont buy 3ds for a long time.
Wii pales in comparison to ps3 in terms of j-games.

  67. Da Man

Seriously, I don’t know how you address a person who claims MS exclusives ‘have’ to sell more because they have higher budgets (of course the idiot will tell you it all went to marketing, as opposed to Sony games, despite Sony games having less content, polish and everything..)

And then they say PS3 is a success despite that it’s behind 360 *and* being more expensive to make..

Only PS3 actually cost more to make, while Sony just burned millions on shitty software.

You can’t argue with selective logic and imagination. The moment you make them upset with your criticism they say you’re trolling and start using their wild imagination.

PSX – 70 million in six years.
    PS2 – 100 million is six years.
    PS3 – 65 million in six years.

Xbox went from a late to the party machine with 23 million in 4 years to a 68 million selling machine with potential to outsell Sony’s original. Which brand is a dying one? hmm, tough one.

  70. zinc

@67, I think what your figures point out is that success is not a given… Though tbh all those figures look good to me!

The GameCube struggled, but then the Wii blew everyone away. Maybe the PS4 will too? Certainly theirs around 60 million people who hope so :-)

Personally I believe all 3 main console makers will have healthy shares of the market. It won’t really matter who has the *lead* at the beginning, as it seems to even out as the cycle continues.

Of course if Apple or Valve release a console… Well that would shake up the status quo.

    #70 3 years ago
  71. Da Man

PS1 entered an established market, having zero fan base (let alone mental followers) and zero experience.

PS2 success was built upon it’s predecessor, customer trust and a dozen of other marketing related things.

    PS3.. well, obv. :/

GCN was a logical continuation of N64. Wii was a radical change.

    #71 3 years ago
  72. OrbitMonkey

^ Maybe the PS4 will be just as radical? Lol! Actually knowing Sony their trying to shoehorn a tablet into it as we speak :-D

Oh wait that’s how their trying to save the Vita! :-P

Sorry, trolling aside, I think predicting how things will go, is best left to professionals like Patcher & should be taken just as seriously ;-)

Though if I were a betting man, I would look at what tech Sony are gonna be trying to push in the next year or so, chances are it’ll be in the PS4.

  73. Kuwabara

@58, sales means shit. valkyria chronicles is better than any xbox 360 exclusive and it barely sold. The same with demon souls. The only reason why halo and gears sells is because theres barely other exclusives on it worth playing, and they pour so much money in to marketing the shit out of it and less time releasing great exclusives!

And as for halo, im sorry i played halo 3 and found a decline from the first 2 games on xbox 360. the uncharted series, Gow 3, mgs4, kz2, demon souls, valkyria chronicles, these are all better than halo and gears. But then you also have so much more other exclusives and variety thats missing on xbox 360. So in my view xbox 360 is a big failure of a hardcore gaming console. If you took away party chat and xbox arcade it’s worth nothing.

@ 67, It’s dying!! Use your brains for once in your life. Common sense here. Ps3 sales have dropped in 6 years from ps2 era because there’s already an established 3rd console competing! Imagine if there was no xbox 360, or if xbox 360 was released a few years after ps3 launch.. think about all those millions of parents who have no idea what xbox 360 does differently to a ps3, and that they purchased one because it’s much cheaper than a ps3.. If a console will become obsolete in the future, it will be xbox 360, because they don’t know want console exclusives mean. Like i said it’s because of the xbox 360 sony will be forced to sell ps4 as cheap as it can, to gain market share off xbox 360.
