Bungie’s Destiny to contain sandbox elements

Saturday, 6th October 2012 14:51 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Destiny, the latest title in the works at Bungie, is going to either be a sandbox title or have sandbox elements, according to the developer.

Speaking in the latest Mailbag on the site, the firm noted the “sandbox” elements to the game when it was mentioned former Rockstar designer Danny Bulla was hired on.

“We liked Red Dead Redemption so much that we hired Danny Bulla to come here and help us fill your next sandbox,” said the firm. “He’s doing some amazing work and, so far, he hasn’t tried to lash any of us to a pair of railroad tracks.”

Looking over Bulla’s LinkedIn profile, it notes Bungie hired him back in April 2011, so he’s been there quite a while already.

Bulla was a senior game designer at Rockstar Games San Diego, where he worked on Red Dead Redemption and it’s Undead Nightmare and Mode packs.

Before that, he was a game designer at Midway and worked on Blacksite: Area-51.

The Bungie post also notes Destiny will feature sounds effects which required the firm to enlist an “entire orchestra of artists” to create.

Still no word on when to expect the title in 2013, but the firm is currently scouting beta testers for the project.

Thanks, GamesRadar.

@1…i said that already a year ago! ;)
this will probably be a mmofps hybrid thing and it will be huge and awesome…cannot wait for gameplay.
@2: mmo must not be shit. must not be the typical mmo thing going on here. if it is a mmo i believe it will be very very different. imagine something like G1GA said, a massive online open world multiplayer first person shooter, designed by bungie! in my ears this sounds like shooter heaven…
it will be faction based too, they already revealed the names of those. cannot wait to play this beast in the vg247 faction

reason why i say mmos are shit is because there always on pc and never on console plus i just always imagine a mmofps would just play mroe like borderlands and less like halo for some reason

Planetside says hello. Awesome since 2003.

I bet Bungie could do some great stuff with that sort of format. I bet Activision could do some terrible things with it though.

It’s simply not true that scale negates gameplay, like DICE have suggested. For stuff like Planetside, the scale basically makes the game.
