38 Studios collapse may result in sale of Schilling’s personal belongings

According to a Boston Globe report, founder Curt Schilling is in financial difficulties following the insolvency of 38 Studios. Schilling stood as guarantor for “millions” in loans to start and run the developer, and his personal belongings, including valuable baseball memorabilia from his career as a Major Leagues pitcher, are among collateral pledged to his creditors. If you’re a baseball geek you’ll be interested to learn this collection includes the infamous “bloody sock” from the 2004 World Series. For everyone else, there’s this Kotaku article explaining its significance. 38 Studios went bust in May; track the whole sorry story here.

I think way too much negativity has gone Kurt’s way. He’s biggest mistake was putting up way too much of his own money and not bringing in other investors. He went in big and he failed- big deal. It happens all the time in business. Donald Trump declared bankruptcy 3 times for nearly a billion dollars- yes, BILLION with a “B”. Not to mention the fact that the governor of Road Island threw the man and the company under the bus when there was a chance they could have pulled out of it.

No doubt, there was some serious mismanagement and he got in over his head, but I hope he gets another chance to create another game company one day. I mean, come on! The guy was a professional athlete AND a lifetime gaming nerd- thats awesome.

This is all really too bad.

Ironically, Kingdom’s of Amalur is one of the very few PS3 games that I actually bought new/paid full price for. I haven’t yet played it, but it looked far too promising to pass up when it was released. It reviewed very well too; over 80%!

So a pretty great game sold hundreds of thousands of copies and the company still went under, never to develop again. Madness.

I know he might made some mistakes with this company, and they didnt handle so well a lot of factors, but i really hope he can bounce back, and like mreko mentioned he can have another shot in this industry, really sad for him, even if he is the most responsable person for this situation he deserves better, good luck in the future man.
