DmC project created 'mutual respect' between Capcom & Ninja Theory

DmC: Devil May Cry developer Ninja Theory has shed light on the early days of its reboot project. The studio has told VG247 why the partnership works, and why the final game will be richer for the experience.

Speaking with VG247, Ninja Theory's Dominic Matthews explained that both sides brought unique talents to the table to make DmC a superb game, and that the development process has led to a great deal of respect between both parties.

"There's a lot of talent on both sides," Matthews said, "Capcom has got such a rich heritage in fighting games, probably better than anyone else in the world. So, it's humbling for us to work with these people who know fighting games so well."

"What we bring to the table is a different set of skills. We bring story-telling, visuals, action gameplay that we've shown in our previous games, and there is a huge mutual respect. The relationship between Capcom and Ninja Theory is really strong."

"Actually, we're quite similar in many ways because we have such high standards on both sides on the table. There's a mutual respect because we both know we're pulling in the right direction."

That mutual respect earned Ninja Theory the license to dip in to the Devil May Cry lore and tweak it in many ways to keep the experience feeling fresh. 'New Dante' aside, Matthews happily shared his thoughts on those key changes with us.

"I think there's a level of freedom that actually helped us think about Devil Macy Cry in different ways. There are elements of the game that are entirely consistent with the cannon, there are other elements that we have changed, and we think that it's the right thing to do."

"I would say that the game definitely has a fresh new look and feel, but there are certainly things in there that he fans will recognise. Dante is the guy that everyone knows and loves."

"Characters like Vergil - we know who he is - but we want to show a different part of that story."
