Sony hints at PS Vita price cut in 2013

Sony’s UK boss has discussed the notion of a PS Vita price cut, but has confirmed that it will have to wait until 2013.

Speaking with Eurogamer, Gara said of PS Vita price cuts, “We always aim to establish price cuts. So the question is not so much if, but when. We won’t have an across the board price down this Christmas.”

“But what you will see us doing is work very hard with our retail partners to add value to the product to make it more compelling,” Gara added, “Even this week there are some tremendously attractive bundles out there, for example wi-fi Vita plus LittleBigPlanet at the £200 price point.”

“There’s the wi-fi product again plus FIFA 13 plus Uncharted Golden Abyss plus LittleBigPlanet at not much above the £200 price point,” Gara continued, “We will be working that very hard over the coming weeks as more and more software arrives.”

When asked if that meant there will be a PS Vita price cut in 2013, Gara replied, “Yes”.

With the Wii U almost out and 3DS XL coming in at a reasonable price point, should Sony be thinking about a Vita cut sooner rather than later? Let us know below.

To be fair, Sony’s portable price cuts have usually meant settling for a shittier screen or some other compromised component. Otherwise, the price-cut is only going to establish a base-line that’s about as expensive as the console can already be had for (Somewhere between Zavvi’s £160 sales a few months ago, and only as good value as the £189.99 Little Big Planet bundle currently on Sainsbury’s).

Great work with killing Vita. Really well done. I mean, even Nintendo failed to resist the urge to kill its system and thus lowered the price in less than a year to avoid its complete and utter death. Sony on the other hand, is in it for the win (Win for Sony = Killing their handhelds).

I wouldn’t mind if there was a Slim edition./

@5 How is a price cut killing the system? Wouldn’t that mean more sales…(Serious question, I’m not trying to troll)

@6
Their point is that not cutting the price *now* and waiting until next year is killing the system.

For the record, it is because Sony put too much tech in the system that they can’t lower the price to a point where average everyday folks will buy Vita. It just costs too much money, Sony would lose too much lowering the price.

That has to be considered when designing a system, handheld or console.

And the old adage of taking a hit on hardware and recouping that loss on software sales, only applies if you can manage to sell enough softrware to make it worth it. If your second or third in the market place, it becomes a lot harder to take that risk.

Now it is cycle that feeds itself. They can’t move units, therefore they aren’t selling games, companies pull suport until more units have been sold, but Sony can’t afford to lower the price in order to move more units, because it isn’t selling enough games.

Tough spot to be in.
