PS Vita & PS3 bundle could be possible before 2013, says Sony

Monday, 1 October 2012 10:46 GMT By Dave Cook

PS Vita and PS3 could be sold in a bundle deal before Christmas, Sony UK head Fergal Gara has suggested to CVG.

In an interview with CVG, Gara was posed a question about the possibility of a combo bundle with both consoles included hitting retail before Christmas. He replied, “We’d have nothing against that whatsoever, and it’s not out of the question that we would do that this Christmas if we wanted to.”

“We put together packages for retail,” he added, “and there’s no reason why we shouldn’t create a ‘Vita plus PS3′ bundle, which could feature games that use cross-play, as well as include a PlayStation Plus subscription that both devices could use.”

Gara said that such a bundle would underline the connectivity between both devices.

What about you? Is this something you would buy? Let us know below.

    @4

    in this case sony have their remote control(the vita) out before nintendo.. and ps3 with its 8 year old hw can compete and do more than this new wii-u with its 8 year old hw. also nintendo dont have the casual gamer anymore, they barly have the hardcore gamers to support them, after they treated them like trash. they for sure aint going to buy the 210 remake of mario,zelda,donkey kong…. so as i see it this round nintendo have NOTHING to show off.

    its all there for the taking if sony play their cards right… and with a ps3+vita bundle priced right, they can do it.

    It would need to be ~£300 for any sort of impact – which I don’t think they could do. As a package PS3 + Vita + PS+ is pretty substantial though. They just couldn’t keep it within the right boundaries with a traditional purchase model.

    i say $600 is a pretty sweet deal if you include a game for the ps3, 16gb flashcard & a game for the vita. plus a year of the ps+…

    Do what?!

    The PS Vita / PS3 combo is and always will be a completly different beast to the Wii U…

    Same as move and PS3 compared to the Wii.

    No devs are going to take the combination seriously when not everyone owns the same set up. It’s why move failed in a big way.

    Sony need to concentrate on the Vita’s pricing and advertising for it not to go under at this point rather than trying to chase Nintendos customers.

    Also, Wii U will be sold out until at least March next year at the rate pre orders are going. I don’t think they are struggling to find people interested in the console.

    Well, considering that the Wii U will retails for 300€-350€, selling the PS3-PS Vita bundle for around, or even less than 400€ could be a possible solution. It isn’t quite cheap but you get a home console, with an established gaming library, and a handheld with some promising games.

    #12 2 years ago
  13. monkeygourmet

    People complained about the different Xbox SKUs.

    If this happens we will have:

    3 PS3 revisions, some with BC, some without
    Numerous hard drive options
    Move bundles
    Vita bundles
    Bundles with movies / games

    It’s too confusing to the average shopper who just wants to buy there kid a console for Xmas…

    #13 2 years ago
  14. ps3fanboy

    @10

    the vita can and do already now what this wii-u controller do… so there is no different beast to recon with here.

    the move can do the same as wii, it have more or less the same games, but the move got less shovel ware than the wii remote and more quality games.

    the devs are already doing cross game play and more, the vita isnt a year old yet. give it time and you will see…

    yes sony are concentrate on the vita’s pricing, they talk bundles and price cuts…

    the wii-u sold out, in japan the first year, i can see that. the rest of the wold after the japan release not so. retailers always like to hype up things, and that is what it is a hype.

    #14 2 years ago
  15. Deacon

    @8 & 11

    I think £350 tops. £400 is too high imo.

    As DrDamn said, £350 or less would be ideal. But that’ll never happen.

    #15 2 years ago
  16. DrDamn

    @10
    “The PS Vita / PS3 combo is and always will be a completly different beast to the Wii U…”

    Agree – but you know that, I know that, Joe Public on the other hand? It still makes sense as a bundle regardless of the Wii-U. It’s never going to be a viable solution such that a game will come out which *requires* a PS3 and Vita. There is substantial cross over though, and if Sony can shift more PS3s and Vita whilst helping with the confusion around what Wii-U actually is and does then that’s all gravy for them.

    @13
    “It’s too confusing to the average shopper who just wants to buy there kid a console for Xmas…”

    Wii-U regular, Wii-U premium, Wii-U ZombiU pack… that’s before the whole what is it and what does it do question is raised.

    #16 2 years ago
  17. CyberMarco

    @15 As of now you can buy a PS3 slim (160gb) for 230€ and a PS VITA for 230€, for a total of 460€. Yeah, it’s a bit pricy, but if they can drop the price around 400€ it can be a good deal. Still have to get an overpriced memory card for the Vita…

    P.S. Kill those spammers!!!

    #17 2 years ago
  18. DrDamn

    @14
    It’s a different beast because it is not standard. Nintendo sell 1m Wii-U and devs know there are 1m Wii-U owners. How big is the PS3/Vita combo game market? No one knows – even people with both may not be interested in a game which requires both. Wii was a massive success part because motion control was a standard part of the Wii package. That might also have been to it’s detriment in some respects, but it was a huge part of it’s success.

    #18 2 years ago
  19. Psychotext

    “retailers have been pushing for a ps3+vita bundle from day one of vita release…”

    Sure they have, because at least that way they save all that wasted vita shelf space. I mean, it’s not like anyone is buying the thing so you might as well throw it in with something that actually sells.

    #19 2 years ago
  20. monkeygourmet

    @14, 17

    The best they could muster would be mild disruption.

    Actually releasing this supposed pack would prob cause more problems for them than it would generate profit.

    It sounds good on paper. Some gamers think it would be cool to have something like the Wii U, but for devs it’s going to be a complete pain in the arse.

    All we are going to see is a bit of cross platform stuff and some of the big devs do some kind of vita / ps3 combo features. Maybe Naughty Dog, Killzone devs etc…

    Maybe it’ll work better for PS4 and by then the price of vita will have dropped.

    It just sounds like a head fuck of an Idea at the moment. It didn’t work for the PSP (which had a huge user base) and now they suddenly want to start pushing it because NIntendo have a new machine out?

    #20 2 years ago
  21. ps3fanboy

    @12

    you must also consider that the ps3 is more than just a toy like the wii-u. so if the ps3+vita bundle cost you a £100 more you also get more, if you expect it to be priced the same as the wii-u your just a cheapskate.

    #21 2 years ago
  22. monkeygourmet

    Sony will have to pay devs EXTRA to implement features for potential cross play when it hasn’t even established the VIta as a platform devs want to use yet?!

    It’s all upside down…

    Get devs inboard THEN start to talk up extra features…

    Sony’s game devision should go bust considering the stupid shit they come out with…

    #22 2 years ago
  23. G1GAHURTZ

    Surely it wouldn’t take much to patch existing PS3 games with standard Vita cross play functionality…?

    #23 2 years ago
  24. DrDamn

    @22
    Don’t think you understand what you can do with the PS3/Vita combination – or indeed what is already out there. There are lots of different ways they can interact and mix things together. Remote Play / Cross Buy / Cross Play / Cross Goods / Cross Save / Cross Controller. Of those only Remote Play and Cross Controller are copied by Wii-U ;).

    #24 2 years ago
  25. CyberMarco

    Another thing is that the Wii U-tablet implementation is possible from out of the box for all the games that are going to be released on the system. The problem is that SONY can’t guaranty how many games will support cross-play/control/etc and even if, how many consumers are willing to get them.

    #25 2 years ago
  26. DrDamn

    @23
    Extra features are moot if the overall package is seen as immediately too expensive. Vita is a fantastic little machine by itself but it’s still £50 more expensive than what people expect and want to spend on something of that nature.

    @24
    Cross Play is Vita vs PS3 online – you probably mean cross control? More Wii-U like functionality? Sony haven’t really pushed that yet – certainly not as much as the other features.

    @25
    Do you mean remote play? Streaming the PS3 game to the Vita bypassing the TV? It does require something of an overhead in memory terms. They are patching it into PS2 HD titles like God of War and ICO/SotC but I don’t think that will take off more until PS4 maybe where they can section off some memory for it.

    #26 2 years ago
  27. monkeygourmet

    The thing is, Sony talk a good game when it comes to connectivity of devices.

    But when it comes to it, because they are primarily a electronics company, and they always have to create demand for new tech, these devices aren’t out for long enough to become established.

    The gaming side is a bit different, but they don’t seem to think of long term investment.

    As shit as Kinect currently is, at least MS is continuing to support it in one way or another.

    In the last 3 years Sony has come up with:

    PSP – PS3 connectivity
    PS3 – sony tablet connectivity
    PS Vita – PS3
    3d TV pushed
    Blu ray for gaming
    Move
    Eyetoy
    Xperia Play PS integration
    Etc, etc…

    All ideas that could be good, but they don’t bother to stick with anything or push it to mainstream.

    Hence, these things tend to fall flat on their arse or become obsolete.

    Jack of all trades, master of none springs to mind…

    I think the key issues here will be price, games that can compete with the asymetrical style of gameplay found on WiiU, if they can coupe with the WiiU performance with the interaction between vita-ps3, and added features, i think this aspects are critical to make this bundle a direct competitor to WiiU, and i think in neither of those the ps3-vita has the advantadge, even in price, unless Sony decides to loss money on the vita and in the ps3, but chances are if they didnt do it with the super slim model, i dont think they can with this, i think it will be better for them to wait for the ps4 to do this type of bundle IMHO.

    #28 2 years ago
  29. ps3fanboy

    @29

    the vita is already in for a 10 year support, that comes directly from sony…

    the ps3 is already 6 years old and will be heavily supported to at least 2016…

    the eyetoy is been here since the ps2 and the move is still here and new games are coming out for it….

    even the psp have new games come out for it… 3d tv still here too, if that ain’t enough establishment for you then i dunno…

    they should do it and do it now – irrespective of the cost…

    This article has helped solidify my theory that if people see stuff in shops, they will buy it -

    There’s a lot of comparison between PS+Vita & WiiU (as always). One really obvious thing noone has mentioned when comparing the two set-ups is that you’re getting two entirely self sufficient systems when you go the Sony route, as opposed to one with a fancy controller. I think that’s worth paying a bit more for, personally.

  31. CyberMarco

    @31 I don’t want to be that guy, but the PS3 launched in November 2006 in JP/US and March 2007 UK/EU, so it’s 5-6 years old. :p

    *EDIT: I see you fixed it! :)

    #31 2 years ago
  32. monkeygourmet

    @31

    Heavily supported till 2016?

    You mean Fifa 2016 and Tiger Woods 2016?

    :)

    I said the gaming side was a bit different, but still, how much support has PSP – PS3, tablet – PS3, 3dtv – PS3, Xperia play really had after the initial unvielings?

    Offering a service and giving continual quality support are two very different and costly things…

    Fact is, there all just disruption tactics, and I can’t see the Vita – PS3 situation being any different given their track record.

    If the cant even get devs on board yet, this idea just seems like pie in the sky…

    As soon as it’s apparent that nobody wants this combo then Sony will drop Vita-PS3 connectivity like a hot shit.

    Just like they fucked their OtherOS users.

    Just like they left all their Move customers high and dry.

    Just like they shut the door on the PSP Go.

    Just like they abandoned all their 3D adopters.

    They are a directionless company, firing out random shit in the hope some of it sticks with absolutely no roadmap, and they don’t give a fuck about the financial casualties they cause on the way.

    The sooner they leave hardware and go software-only the better. It will happen. Their draining financial reserves will dictate just how soon.

    Key issues:-
    1) Price …
    - Agree here – Wii-U will always be cheaper.
    2) Games that can compete with the asymetrical style of gameplay found on WiiU …
    - Again agree because the Wii-U is a standard package, better integrated. Though it does have to rely on other elements – wii-controllers for example, which are non-standard.
    3) Can coupe with the WiiU performance with the interaction between vita-ps3
    - Wii-U has advantage in terms of memory, but PS3/Vita combo has processing. Not just the PS3 but the Vita has it’s own memory, processor, GPU etc. So disagree there.
    4) Added features
    - The PS3/Vita combo is a lot more flexible so in terms of raw features it is better. It still doesn’t get it over the standard and integrated nature of the Wii-U/controller though. So disagree on number and possibilities of added features, but in practice I think the WiiU would see a lot more use.

    yes, the wii-u have this controller with extra screen and mini games. for the mario 210 remake and there the flexibility ends.. while the vita goes beyond that and more…

    You are forgetting the single most important word in that sentence – CAN.

    Vita CAN do more, but due to limited developer support in the majority of cases it WON’T do more, or even equal to, what WiiU does because every WiiU owner has the tablet and there are fuck all Vitas out there.

    We’ve seen it all before fron Sony. We know how it ends, which is disappointingly.

    Take your head out of the sand kid, or smell the coffee, or whatever cliche works for you, but don’t delude yourself that PS3+Vita is anything more than Sony shouting ‘LOOK! A FLYING ELEPHANT!’ at Ninendo’s launch party.

    Disruption tactic is what it is, and it will only last for as long as it serves its purpose which is not long after the WiiU launch period.

    What Gadzooks! said. It’s nothing but empty promises and “potential” at this point. Only people like ps3fanboy actually believe this will ever amount to anything.

    If you want to know how this’ll turn out, just look at the GameCube/GBA connectivity. Sure, it had about 3 games worth playing in the end, which was nice for people who already owned both, but nothing to go out of your way for.

    Oh, and for balance: SmartGlass looks like an even more useless attempt to ape Nintendo’s new idea.

    It makes me laugh how every time Nintendo PR make an announcement you can almost imagine Sony and MS R&D departments frenziedly rifling through piles of half-disassembled products with a roll of sellotape wondering which of their existing products crammed together could do a broadly similar thing as Nintys new thing if shoved on the market within 48hrs.

    For me, the great thing about this bundle wont be the stupid 2 screen gimmick (3D is much better than this shit), buy cross buy, where one version of the game provides other for free. If done properly, cross buy could be really big.

    Wow, there is alot of hate for PS3/Vita here today. Let’s think about this real fast, what does Wii U have over PS3+Vita and vice versa? What’s going to happen is that the PS3 and Vita bundle are going to cost more than the Wii U, everyone knows that, but why? Easy, because you get TWO systems. Cross-Control and Cross-Buy will become your best friend at that point, but the Wii U will be cheaper and it controller will work with every game it has. PS3/Vita will not. But look over here, the Vita and PS3 gives two different experiances that can be put together if you want. In the long run, Wii U, PS3, and Vita can offer different experiances and different prices.

    I own a Vita now, love the device but have only used it to catch up on a few old PlayStation games so far, just don’t have the money to splurge on the several good games it is & will be offering, I’l have to wait for some specials.

  51. DrDamn

    @51
    Well quite. The strength and reality of the Wii-U is very different to the strength and reality of the PS3/Vita combo. Both perfectly valid.

    @52
    Plenty of cheap/free stuff out there too. Not sure on US prices but Everybodies Golf is very cheap digitally here (about £12). Plus stuff like MotorstormRC, Sound Shapes are good value (especially as you get the PS3 versions included). Free stuff like Ecolibrium, Frobisher Says, Treasure Park are good for a try too.

  52. monkeygourmet

    @51

    But thats the whole point of why it’s a stupid venture.

    Of course, a few gamers on this site like the idea of hooking up all your tech, but the average ‘joe blogs’ just wants shit to work…

    It’s like Android over IOS…

    Android offers more functions, but nothing is standerised. Hence why shit always works better on IOS.

    Nintendo games will ALWAYS have certain tablet features.

    PS3 and Vita will have some, but not others… It’s too slap dash to make any sense on a mass market level.

    Oh well, keep dreaming SDF. I thought most of you hated the idea of a tablet controller for gaming anyway.

    Now Sony suggests this wacky business idea, suddenly you all love it…

    Funny stuff…

    @53, I’m Australian- our dollar is currently above parity with the USD, the average Vita game on PSN is $55 but can get much higher, Fifa 13 $80 for example.

    #53 2 years ago
  54. SuperGuyverUSA

    @54

    It can be looked at as either stupid or genius. I find it a little of both. It’s stupid because it will cost alot, but it’s genius because they will give you more than you normally would. I, personally, am looking forward to getting PlayStation All-Stars and Sly on both PS3 and Vita. I’m excited to see how the two systems will work together. One thing the PS3/Vita will have over Wii U is the power to take the game where ever you want with Cross-Save. And by using Cross-Buy, you get two games for the price of one.
