Splinter Cell: Blacklist response has been “uninformed” and a “kneejerk reaction”

Splinter Cell: Blacklist is in a difficult position. The game must atone for the failings of previous title Conviction, whilst bringing something new to the table. Ubisoft showed off a torture scene at E3, but much of the response has been negative.

Blacklist director David Footman suggests this criticism is unwarranted.

“Everyone can make kneejerk reactions to a vertical slice of the game that are really uninformed as to what the whole experience is like,” he told Eurogamer. “We really have to be patient as we roll out each item about the game.”

“The proof is always going to be in the pudding. Talk is talk, and it is just all talk right now. We really need to get a demo out there, for people to see how you can ghost levels, to see the gameplay. It seems to be an overreaction because people are just seeing the ‘pow!’, the explosiveness.”

Footman comments on the E3 footage, indicating it was shown to promote a reaction.

“What we showed at E3 was very explosive, very violent. That kind of stuff tends to get shown, but as we roll out different aspects of the game you’ll see a lot more diversity and lot more of what hardcore fans are expecting to see.”

The developer suggested such scenes are reminiscent of the real-world.

“What people won’t say, but what they’ll dance around, is that is the price of freedom to protect Americans and their sedans and SUVs.”

Splinter Cell: Blacklist is scheduled for a PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 release in Spring 2013.

    Splinter Cell game can’t have explosive moments. Splinter Cell was born like stealth game and it should remain stealth. He zan talk whatever he wants but Splinter Cell fans are disappointed. Sam Fisher is a ghost not Rambo.

    This just in:

    You should never ever change anything in games, ever, or you’ll piss off a very loud minority.
    Also, gamers know what’s best for a game, rather than developers. They’re able to tell this just from screenshots and videos. Very highly skilled are gamers.

    Sorry but gameplay mechanic like mark en execute is not for stealth game. Splinter Cell was all about planing and hiding with consequences if enemy spot you. Now you can play Rambo style and game wont punish you. For stealth game that is unacceptable.

    @2 Change must reflect the spirit of the game. There are plenty of sequels that evolve the franchise and many reboots that offer something new and unique while capturing the spirit of the original.

    Developers make games for us. Sure, they might say they’re doing it for themselves (like Tameem Antoniades or David Gaider), but in the end they’re putting in a lot of effort to share the game with us – marketing, shipping, polish. Of all games, sequels in particular are made if we like the game enough to support the continued existence of a franchise.

    There is creative freedom, and companies within the entertainment industry are more than entitled to it, but there’s also integrity, which we are also entitled to expect. Remember Dreamfall? I don’t remember either the press or gamers defending that, and now it’s suddenly popular (especially for the media) to defend companies that take franchises in a direction that clashes with its spirit.

    Sure, it’s too early to put out a verdict for Blacklist, but it’s extraordinarily childish to tailor a demonstration for your fans, then claim your fans knee-jerk too much.

    Wait, what, where did that come from? How does this have anything to do with the game itself?

    Anyway, i still consider Conviction to be the best game in the series. The huge problem i have with Blacklist is that the story goes from a more personal tale, back to terrorist hunting. That’s boring. That’s the #1 reason why any of the previous Splinter Cell Stories were boring.

    Ghost Recon FS is a very good example of how to ruin a great game. the GRAW games weren’t even real Ghost Recon anymore, but they were more GR than Future Soldier ever will be. I’m very afraid whats going to happen to Rainbow Six. Ubi’s not what they used to be.

    Ghost Recon Future Soldier – Good game, spent ages on it. the gameplay was fantastic. I admit, I never played it for the story, most games like that end up with Russia being the bad guys somehow and its so fecking predictable. Call of Duty has been doing that for years.
    Splinter Cell: Conviction – Not a true Splinter Cell, but it was a good game. I loved the old Splinter Cell’s (Pandora Tomorrow being my favourite) but that does not stop these ones being great.
    Blacklist: You can still play it as stealth, ergo, it is still a stealth game. You don’t have mark and execute targets if you don’t want to, you can play it Ghost style.

    @10 He seems to be saying that the scenes of ultraviolence and torture that have been shown so far are not only reminiscent of real-world military operations but that such actions are necessary to protect the western way of life. Which tells me all I need to know about this man (who’s probably never been anywhere near armed conflict) and his game.

    Negative response??? This was the best thing at Microsoft E3 press conference in my eyes, it looked amazing.

    And what is everyones beef about SC Conviction? it was by far the best game in the series. Have you actually tried playing them old Splinter Cell games now?? Trust me, it’s hard to do. They modernised it so well with the last one and i cant wait for the next one, looks pretty damn good.

    Just bring back Michael Ironside and i’ll be happy.

    Take a classic stealth series which has mainly been set in its own World away from brown deserts.

    Remove all stealth, have main character re-voiced by someone of lesser talent, have main character smash through doors because thats stealthy and Jack Bauer or whatever the kids still like 24 right? Set game in brown desert. Have some sort of gun modification system and a half arsed multiplayer mode.

    Why the kids not like our game? ;_; knee-jerk.

    @18 stealth only dont know which S.C games you played but they were never that i used to find rooms in the old games to hide piles of bodies 1 for live ones 1 for dead. the thing about the old ones was you could play them either way & it looks like you’ll be able to do that here as well.

    As for Conviction there were story reasons for most of the mechanics in the game and the mark and execute made me feel like a bad ass. as for the black-&-white-o-vision in the earlier games sams suit had an array of light sensors which read out on a meter on his forearm. so no suit equals no meter hence black and white (i loved it by the way)

    The people who enjoyed Conviction prefer shooting over sneaking. The people who enjoyed the previous games (especially the sublime Chaos Theory) prefer sneaking over shooting. Blacklist appears to be trying to cater to both tastes but I’m still skeptical.

    Only (big)difference between Conviction and previous SC is it was much faster and you needed to kill instead of knocked them down.
    You could still pass by them in 80% of the time.
    I still love both Chaos Theory and Conviction equally but they are also different game.

    The biggest problem is that all games are trying to include too many different styles of gameplay.

    Games like Splinter Cell, Resident Evil, Uncharted et all are all using very similar mechanics as each other.

    We start to lose genres if everything plays the same…

    @26 Isn’t it obvious why? Because now they make games to satisfy every taste. As a result, RPG blurs into Gears of War, Stealth blurs into Gears of War, Survival Horror blurs into Gears of War and a game that people loved for those reasons suddenly loses its identity. However sometimes it’s good to expand upon a franchise by taking it to new heights, but most of the time it end up in holes that are really hard to climb out of them. Exactly like Resident Evil games.

    When you’re investing around $50 million USD into a game, you want to ensure it’s received well by the widest audience possible. Games used to go deep rather than wide (e.g. Street Fighter 3), now it’s the other way around. The real problem is that AAA console/PC games take ages to make and cost a shit-ton of money – two factors that will only increase moving forwards… probably.
