Blizzard honour sightless WoW player and his guild-mate

The story about two special World of Warcraft players made its way across the Internet in January. Hexu, an enhancement shaman played by British soldier Ben Shaw, isn’t your average gamer. Shaw was on duty in Iraq when a roadside bomb left him completely blind. Remarkably, he has continued to play WoW, and has been rewarded by Blizzard for doing so.

Shaw’s character is aided by Davidian, a Death Knight played by a Scotsman named Owen. Davidian uses a series of macros through his and Scot’s machines to perform a guide’s role for the soldier. Hexu is able to raid, repair, and kill with the help of his buddy.

Blizzard has now honoured the two with in-game items. “Hexu’s Amplifying Helm” and “Davidian’s All-Seeing Eyes” offer tribute to the work of both men. The description on both items is equally heart-warming, as “A man with a friend is never without vision” and “Sharp enough to see for two men” appear.

A lovely way to kick-off Friday.

Cheers Joystiq.

Quite amazing. Gaming needs more stories like this.

What’s amazing? Terrorist goes to Afghanistan where he murders innocent people and when he gets wounded every brainwashed idiot out there brands him a hero? Then he comes home where he receives a high army pension and plays games for fun. Wow! What a said existence! And then Blizzard honors him. Well, this part I expected. It doesn’t surprise me that Blizzard is honoring terrorists. You have to keep giving them some rewards, otherwise who will go and kill innocent people so the brainwashed idiots can live their lavish lives with the loot that their governments are stealing from Afghanistan!?

People moan and complain about Blizzard just using their players for money, and yet they never say anything about the good things that the company does.

It’s amazing stuff like this that separate Blizzard from other developers.

**Mini-rant incoming**

While I most certainly don’t agree with the sentiment that all those in the forces are ‘heroes’, I think #3 could’ve used a little more tact in his comment.

I thought about a career in the forces years ago, but couldn’t stomach the fact that I would be doing the bidding of a more-than-likely corrupt regime.

I don’t doubt a lot of what they do is noble and for the greater good, but in this day and age who really has the right to say who the terrorists are, and who should live and die?

The idea that they’re all out there protecting our freedom is completely untrue to me. Very few know the real motives behind their actions, and conflict generally only breeds more conflict and hatred.

/rant.

Cool story though :)

@3 Most veterans don’t get high army pensions, you obnoxious little ass. America has a serious problem right now in fact where a lot of veterans come back home and unable to obtain stable jobs or a reliable welfare. And these men have more balls than you will ever possess in your entire life.

If you want to scream terrorist, point your finger at the government, not the soldiers.

I don’t care much for WoW anymore (it was a great game once, not anymore) or Blizzard’s games in general, but they’ve always be good with stuff like this. It’s a sweet gesture.

As someone who is legally blind and largely unable to walk, I know just how much little gestures like this can do to lift a person’s spirits. My hat goes off to Blizzard, but especially to Shaw and Owen – one for his bravery, and the other for his kindness.

@10, +1

No one’s innocent in these wars. Why can’t we just throw our guns away & give each other a big hug? I’m serious here, there’s no need to kill each other for a regime led by the corrupt & the insane. The soldiers aren’t the bad guys, it’s the governments & extremists.

@12 – agreed.
Though (and this may be controversial) there’ll always be a minority of thuggish brutes who sign up primarily to satisfy their penchant for violence. Like any career path you get all sorts I’m sure.

We don’t even need to hug, just to realise how futile it all is.

@10 – Well said, anyone that kills is no hero but I still hold my point that 3 is a complete moron. The only wars that have any ‘good’ intentions to them are the ones that go to aid the oppressed or those in need, and even then, war still isn’t good.

War isn’t all bad. It is one of the main reasons we have the current technology at our disposal today…

It’s so much easier to sit in front of a computer screen and enjoy everything you have, than it is to ensure that you keep it.

Okay, let’s abolish all of our armies. You first.

LOL! You brainwashed fucks! This wasn’t even about the money. It was about people who die because these soldiers love to kill. It was about stealing their natural resources. You heartless pieces of s**t! Fine! He’s not getting a big paycheck at the end of his killing spree (though I know some soldiers who do). But this is not about that. They go around killing women, children and disabled people and you think that’s OK because they do it for you, so you can have the resources that you need. And for them of course. There’s nothing like killing women and children! Right!? Also, it’s their choice!! No one makes them join the army. And follow orders that lead to genocide. They could get REAL JOBS! Doh!

Everyone has their hand dirty generally , although taliban is worse than anything else out there. Think about it , every civilian kill by nato when reaches media is dealt with severely which forces them to behave better, but taliban kill more civilians in orders of magnitude and no one reports because its a “common thing” in sharia rule. Comment made by roadkill is a very ignorant one.

Ppl like roadkill are the same.
Yes there is many a hidden government in the background who controls our world etc blablabla, but
1. You can’t do anything about it, so leave it be and live your life
2. You could declare your point of view in a normal way

@Topic Thats awesome and very heart-warming.

If it works for him, I guess.
