The Story of Warcraft recaps events leading up to Mists of Pandaria

Blizzard has launched a subsection on which tells The Story of Warcraft from its beginnings in 1994 all the way up to Hour of Twilight – the last content released for World of Warcraft. The section breaks down each bit of lore from Warcraft and World of Warcraft by individual release in the form of chapters offering a synopsis, videos and really nice artwork.     If they want anyone to take that seriously then they honestly need to do a Transformers-style aligned continuity, and then change the content in the game to actually reflect that. As it stands right now, there are so many glaring retcons (many of which Metzen himself admits to) that the lore just doesn’t make any sense any more.

    I believe there was one point where the writers pretty much admitted that ‘with something this large, our attitude has to be whatevs,’ but that doesn’t make for good lore, if indeed good lore is something that you’re after.

    And the problem is is that it isn’t just a few minor errors, either. There are just glaring continuity issues.

    So an aligned continuity would help sort that out.

    To be honest, I might even be inclined to read such an aligned continuity. But as a lore nerd who likes his lore and fantasy writing, I have to say that WoW right now is something of a joke. Not because of its setting or anything ridiculous like that, but simply because the writers straight up don’t care about continuity. They’re just throwing things into the Warcraft melting pot with gleeful abandon.

    Whether these things clash with prior things or not is unimportant. And some things are just ambiguous. I’m not talking about subjective cultural tellings, either. Some things are just objectively outright contradictory.

    So yeah, I’d be genuinely interested in seeing a complete rewrite of the lore, from the ground up, dealing with these issues.

    I would take the inverse point to Wulf’s: WoW’s lore is and always has been a joke. And I don’t mind. The offense lies in their pretending otherwise.

    Blizzard’s practice on lore has always been pretty transparent: their cookie-cutter bullshit is there to service gameplay and is subject to alteration and illogic at any moment. People refuse to learn this, even as every single product branded Warcraft departs from the Warcraft lore up until the launch of that product.

    This has included famous “the new race or class cannot possibly make sense” debates from each expansion. Blizz Don’ Care. They decided that Horde elves, Alliance demons, and both sides allied with a class dedicated to the destruction of life on Azeroth are would be cool and make for exciting gameplay elements. They hand wave past it and move on. Heck, they even changed which powers were had by which classes between WC3 and WoW.

    For God’s sake, these people actually put a jousting faire – in which any class could smite their noble opponents with a lance from their destrier before sampling the exotic delights of the realms – north of Icecrown Citadel while Arthas was still in it – the WoW equivalent of the black plain of Mordor in the shadow of Barad-Dur. Undoubtedly there will be a rewrite — in five years before Warcraft 4, where most of the cruft from WoW will be swept under the rug.

    I always thought that was pretty clear, and that’s why I thought the whole “Pandaren?!” outrage was so ridiculous.

    Warcraft lore has never been rich, it has never set any standard of believability for itself. It’s always been secondary to the games themselves.
