Second Life developer reveals colourful world-builder Patterns

Second Life developer Linden Labs has unveiled its next project, a colourful world-building game that sees players creating their own 3D play space. The developer has also revealed a trailer showing off the game’s building elements and universe. Watch it below.

Patterns gives players simple shapes that they can use to craft objects and manipulate them with physics. It’s Minecraft with curves in many respects, although with a greater emphasis on social interaction and shared experiences.

You can register for the Patterns beta here, and check out the trailer below.

Looks a bit pants, if I’m honest.

I’m intrigued. Minecraft started off as an iterative process that looked worse (and if I’m honest, still looks worse) than this. And Linden Labs has a surprising amount of clout and a good development ethos.

And really? We could use more creative sandbox games. This really is my kind of thing, too. I don’t get into the killing side of gaming, much, which is admittedly 95% of gaming. It takes a really compelling Universe or visual aesthetic to even get me interested in such.

So my desire to game is somewhat limited by that, on occasion. This kind of thing, though? I could get on board with this. To be honest, if I were to be pert, I’d say that this looks like the concept of Eskil Steenberg’s Love game done right.

I liked the aesthetic of Love, but not the content. This seems to have a similar aesthetic, but with content that I find more appealing.
