City of Heroes may be saved from shutdown

City of Heroes, City of Villains and Paragon Studios may yet escape a fateful late November shutdown.

According to an in-game message from a City of Heroes admin, “Paragon management is having discussions with NCsoft and investors”.

The message was spotted by a player and posted to the City of Heroes forum, but appears to be genuine, as community manager Andy Belford acknowledged the message and asked fans not to get too excited as “discussions” doesn’t necessarily mean anything will come of it.

But in the meantime, there’s a petition you can sign, and a whole community dedicated to saving the MMO through various means.

The influential MMO’s closure was announced late last week, much to the disappointment of fans.

Thanks, Massively.

Part of the reason I chose to so strongly support this effort is the hope that if we can work out some way of saving City of Heroes in some form, it will set a model for the future. Every MMO that has ever existed had SOME fans who loved it.

Whether they have really thought it through consciously or not, the heroes of Paragon City are fighting for ALL MMOs. Yes, NCsoft is running a business. But the players are their customers, and have invested time, money, and creativity in the virtual world they’ve helped create over the past 8 years. A lot of us believe that a better way can be found than just flipping off the power switch on the servers and deleting all the code and databases.

Whether we’re right or wrong, time will tell. Regardless of the odds, we will fight as politely and respectfully as always, but we WILL fight to the bitter end and beyond. We are heroes. This is what we do.
