The Last of Us – PAX video shows new gameplay
The Last of Us was shown at PAX last weekend, just as promised, and the video featuring new gameplay is posted below.

The video is what was shown behind closed doors to only “a very select few media members” at E3.
In the gameplay demo, Naughty Dog highlights “narrative exploration through interactive prompts,” puzzles, AI, and dynamic stealth elements.
The Last of Us is a PS3-exclusive expected sometime next year.

You could tell just by the composer alone that this game was going to be something special. This gameplay footage just confirms it.

I really wish I could see what everyone else is seeing.
I’ve enjoyed most of Naughty Dogs’ stuff immensely, but the whole formula is just starting to get a bit dull. This just looks like Uncharted with a different colour palette. It feels *so* similar that I find it a little disconcerting.

@6 I think that’s what defines a developer’s work/style/expression. It’s not necessary a bad thing, but all comes down from everybody’s different prospective in the end.

I’m with you, Michael.
It looks good visually and I’m intrigued by it, but every time there’s a post or thread about it, posters go crazy with the hyperbole.
I’m not really seeing it yet.

@6: You could definitely say that the gameplay has alot of similarities, but to me its just the skeleton of the gameplay that is similar. The big difference is how close and slow the gameplay seems to be compared to Uncharted.
Just look at the killing for example. When Joel choked the raider dude, it really seemed very difficult and slow, compared to the fast neck-snap from uncharted. The killing is brutal and painful, reflective of the world they live in.
The focus of the gameplay seems to be more about the interaction between the two characters and their struggle for survival.

i agree this “The Last of Us” smell so much of uncharted that it bore the hell out of me by just looking at that video. i want something new not something uncharted with new skin…

@1o Its Naughty Dawg’s formula and it works. Look at the Uncharted series and as #9 says it may seem similar but they toned down the amount of action to increase the brutality of killing for the sake of survival. Also the stealth component is so much better than Uncharted. Can’t get mad at a studio for doing what they know how to do and it sells.

@6 I tend to find that criticism can be levelled at a number of games that have legions of fans or supporters. Many which show far less variance in their execution.
One mans ‘winning approach’ is another’s ‘lack of imagination’.

It would be very easy to chalk this up as Uncharted with zombies, especially as Naughty Dog’s cinematic flair is very much on show.
But the gameplay is very different and hopefully the claim of being able to approach situations in a variety of ways, prevent it from being too linear.

This looks like uncharted with far better a.i and graphics,It may be more of the same but ramped up another level or 2.Im really looking forward to this game, its going to be the best game in this console cycle without a doubt, all the haters are just being childish,im a pc gamer mainly but id say nothing comes close to this for art direction, gameplay and a.i.
Brilliant.

It looks like Uncharted but with different colour pallete and formula because PS3 can’t do shit more than that.
For F sake. We need next Gen so hard right now.
It’s the same game that everyone makes. The Last Of Us has nothing new that others in this gen can’t to be honest.
the Last Of Us have ok graphics (good for a console), fantastic AI, i hope gameplay is not That scripted. Story is probably good.
It’s just ok. This generation of consoles is predictable and dull as fuck because of 7 year old technology that is 10 year old to be honest.
I don’t want The Last Of Us, for me all PS3 and 360 games this year are just dull. They are pretty, but dull even if it is Naughty Dog and Naughty Dog is an AMAZING developer. One of the best for sure.

I’d love for someone to post a video of a section of Uncharted with gameplay that looks like that.

^It’s the same game. The difference between them that Uncharted is glamour Third Person Shooter with faster movement with responsive shooting mechanic.
It’s the same game, but different setting, different character speed, better AI (i hope that it is not That scripted), TLOU have inventory, both linear.

@18, 20,
^hahaha xD. I mean… it’s core gameplay is probably not the same, but the look of it and feel is the same.
for me it just feels the same but slower and i’m not saying that this is bad or anything. It’s just predictable. I’m not really That excited although when Naughty Dog showed Uncharted 2 for the first time… i was blown away.

Well of course you’re not excited, its not on PC. Good to confirm that the whole “Its the same game” thing doesnt actually stand up though.

“Well of course you’re not excited, its not on PC.”
Your fanboy assumption. I have a console so I don’t see how this could be awesome if this was suddenly a PC game?

Looks outstanding – as per previous footage.
Cynics are of course going to say it’s a re-skinned Uncharted, though I guess we’ll not know exactly how similar / different it plays until release. The earlier video showing the first part of this video played out quite a bit differently with a different approach, so it’s looking like we will actually be able to take on encounters in different ways.
I’m a sucker for any game with interesting characters and a strong, intriguing narrative. The rest is just fluff for me. And god damn does ND’s fluff look good.
I haven’t even played UC3 yet, so I’m no huge ND fan. I just think this looks ace!

My god, you said it best my friend –
One mans ‘winning approach’ is another’s ‘lack of imagination’.
I couldn’t of said it better. Theres a reason Last Of Us is geting so much buzz right now.. and it’s sad to see a select few who hate on it simply for that very reason but yet tell them selfs otherwise.
Quite funny actually.

Crash was nothing like Jak. Jak was nothing like Uncharted.
The Last of Us is kinda similar to Uncharted but not all that much. I think Naughty Dog has alot more to them than just this.
Also have we not already seen most of this footage already? Apart from the goofy glowing immersion breakers of course.

People on this site are so negative, there is plenty about the game play video that looks awesome other then the graphics. The characters reaction with the environment, modded guns and having to preserve ammo and look for health packs fit into the story and help gameplay.
Yet all you people keep saying is “uncharted movie scripted not interested”and you havnt even played the game.
Also if you dont have a ps3 and your being sad lonely PC fanboy just die.

Sorry, but i don’t think this game looks like Uncharted. Besides the design, and some scripted events i think is a whole new experience.
And #15, you don’t need to have a new hardware to have a good experience in games. How many games you have on PS3/360 and PC looking better than this. On ps3: none, 360: none PC: few. So why the need to move on. The answer is really simple very few developers work enough to deliver a complete experience.
I really don’t mind to play 2 more years games looking like Uncharted and The Last of Us if they are true entertainment .
But it’s true that the demos of Star Wars and the Watch Dogs are gorgeous.

noone is hating on it but i cannot get that excited about it either and i can understand the criticism stated here. i will pick it up for sure, it looks fun no doubt! but it does not look like a masterpiece to me. I YET HAVE TO PLAY IT THOUGH! i liked the uncharted games but even those aren´t among my top 15 games this gen, maybe in the top 20´s…it will probably be a great game, no doubt about that but i feel a lot like erth. this year there wasn´t much exciting stuff…for me only some games on the 3ds wowed me. naughty dog are playing very safe with this one: uncharted style gameplay, mixed with stealth/ survival elements and ZOMBIS/infected…this will sell. no doubt. it will be a quality game, but the “best game this console cycle” like nr 14 said, with games like mario galaxy, portal2, skyward sword, orange box and many many more- i highly doubt that…you know, i recently played cave story on the 3ds, never played it before on pc…this little game reminded me yet again: less is more sometimes. tech isn´t always making a great game. creativity is…and this i see lacking here…a bit. no hate. will buy and enjoy. just not hyped. that´s all.

Not really sure why people are comparing it to uncharted, just enjoy it for what it is, why compare everything.

I am avidly anticipating this. Mainly for the story, but if the gameplay goes all Splinter Cell, like it looks, then I could be a massive sucker for that.

I guess any form of realistic shadows went out the window when they made this game LOL.
Otherwise it looks fantastic, great atmosphere and the gameplay looks great. I just hope it has some form of dynamic difficulty as the enemies did seem a little dumb as they seemed to follow set paths depending on where you go. Which for replay value is not going to be good. But as long as this offers 10+ hours of gameplay then I am satisfied
Funny how people thought this was going to be a PS4 game when we first saw it as the VGA’s lol Lacking any form of shadows, static lighting everywhere, low textures, and really could do with some anti-aliasing. But still they work with what they have, and it does look pretty good. However, I think Uncharted looks a little better in the graphics department.

How is this anything similar to Uncharted?
If Uncharted is an Aventador, this one’s a Cee’d. The gameplay looks alarmingly slow and methodical considering it takes about 3 minutes to dispatch 3 enemies. You could deal with the same number of enemies in just 10 seconds in Uncharted.
Okay, maybe the guy who’s playing this could be more accurate with the revolver and I’m guessing there would be a faster and more efficient way in dealing with them.
The difference is mostly in the details but they’re not entirely hard to miss.
