Color me not impressed. I am glad they are going to back to the more original MGS roots as I have hated every single one of them bar the first one on PS1 and its remake on Gamecube.

Do NOT expect it to look anything like that on current consoles, although the graphics were nowhere near as good as the press had hyped them to be. I mean, the lighting sure was excellent… it was ALL at night so more or less any lighting will look better. But the textures on the characters were dreadful, extremely low res the dogs in particular look like plastic toys. The cloth dynamics and physics looked pretty cool but lacked any real flow and they moved very unrealistically. If this is meant to be aimed at mid-range PC hardware from current gen tech then fair enough, but I think they could of gotten a little more out of them that this.

Although this is the first MGS game in over a decade that has gotten my attention, in terms of potential gameplay and not graphics.

Looks amazing. I’m glad this is a true MGS title and not some crazy spin-off.

Thank the gods some exciting news has finally come out of the video game industry. I’ve been stagnating on boring crumbs all year. I have a feeling we’re finally getting a glimpse of what next gen console graphics will look like, and I couldn’t be happier!

  11. macronia

That was stunning but i am confused … if it is running on PC , then how come in the end of the trailer it says xbox 360 and ps3 only ??

Because That is the platforms it will be on.

I’m not happy, Kojima 2 years ago when he was showing off FOX Engine said his next project will be a multiplatform title and will be on PC as well, and here there was no PC or Windows anywhere…

But the game looks great, especially animations. Can’t wait for an Englished dubbed trailer.

    #15 2 years ago
  16. Maximum Payne

@15 Well I don’t think they trouble all that like just for one demo ?
Its probably same thing like Battlefield 3 and Star Wars 1313.

    #16 2 years ago
  17. macronia

@16 .. Well PCs are used to develop and demo games, using developer kits based on the hardware/software of the console the game is being made for. The trailer does NOT say it will be on PC, but it does very clearly say it will be on PS3 and 360. A demo running on a PC using a console developer kit DOES NOT mean the game will have a version that will install and run on a regular, windows based PC. Literally every console exclusive game ever made was built using a PC with a devkit, and early demos were running on a PC with a devkit.

Of course i hope a PC version as the game seems it uses heavily graphics

    #17 2 years ago
  18. Yoshi

@8 Well firstly this is Big Boss (original Snake) so it’s not as if this is Solid Snake and that MGS4 ending was just a waste of time :P

    #18 2 years ago
  19. Maximum Payne

@17 I don’t know about that. Games are made on PC but I’am not sure they are run on PC, especially in like PS3 exclusive which architecture is completely different for you can just ”try” and demo on PC.

    #19 2 years ago
  20. Takeshi

Well, not a huge MGS fan, but fuck me, next-gen graphics can’t come soon enough!! I want a new Soul Reaver and the third Batman game with this kind of graphics!

    #20 2 years ago
  21. diego-rbb-93

#18, not really sure about. It could be Solid Snake as hes´s aging, or it could be Big Boss years later ahead of Peace Walker. The key is the eye´s patch, is made of leather. WTF would do SS with one like that? Its definitely Big Boss.

The cage boy cant be Raiden or Frank Jaeger, according to what I´ve read on MGS Wiki, if we take the fact of SS/BB age. In fact, if is BB the one we are playing, that kid could even be Solid Snake.

MGS4 was the end of Solid Snake. There are more stories that could be made about him, but at that point, his history is finished, nothing else can be said about him after the final of MGS4. Kojima made it sure it was done in that way, and he will respect it forever.

About the PC Fact, its probably coming to this platform. Kojima wants it.

    #21 2 years ago
  22. Hcw87

No way in hell this will release on current platforms, it wouldn’t be run on PC if it were. It’s just like Star Wars 1313, a next gen title. And who knows, maybe it’ll look even better on the actual next gen systems. The 360 can’t handle graphics and physics like that, let alone the PS3. And why would they show it running on pc if the graphics will be nowhere near what it shows in the video? It’s just obvious.

For me this was almost as impressive as Star Wars 1313, can’t believe people can bash the graphics shown here. Better than anything we’ve got so far on 360/PS3.

    #22 2 years ago
  23. Dragon246

If this trailer/gameplay graphics are really this gen (which I highly doubt), other game engines should just shut their shops down.

    #23 2 years ago
  24. diego-rbb-93

#22 Fail. The game is confirmed for PS3/360. In fact, the PC where the demo was running use close specifications to the PS3 specs. This game is a prologue for the MGS5 on Next-gen, all webs are confirming it.

    #24 2 years ago
  25. GwynbleiddiuM

@21 You’re wrong, Big Boss lost his right eye, while Solid Snake have both eyes intact. So this is indeed Big Boss and there’s no doubt about it.
The suit that Snake’s wearing in this demo is the exact same suit as Peace Walker.

The game takes place after the events of MGS: Peace Walker and the spanish signs suggests they’re still in south america.

The child is Chico in the cage and there are mentions of Paz, both are MGS: PW characters. Also Big Boss is in communication with Kazuhira Miller, I recognize the voice from Peace Walker Japanese trailer.

Did you even read the subtitles? CHICO CHICO CHICO…

Frank Jaeger was an adult and he was in Portable Ops. You’d know him as Null in MGS: PO.

  26. Psychotext

They need to dial back that wet look, everything looks like plastic. Metal, skin, fabric, rocks… all plastic.

    #26 2 years ago
  27. Dragon246

True. If anything, ps3 version will be the best as KojiPro has worked on ps3 more. Ps3 is difficult to develop for, but best looking consoles games are on it as it beats 360 in processing grunt easily. First party and japanese studios games are proof of that.
And really, if this is ps3 graphics, all other game engines should go to hell for giving us games with sub-par graphics for last 6-7 years.

    #27 2 years ago
  28. GwynbleiddiuM

@27 I’m a PS3 owner and I despise xbox 360, but you’re wrong. Red Dead Redempion looks much better on Xbox and has more details for starters. when PS3 isn’t the lead design platform it always looks slightly worse than 360.

Also, this was a demo, it could look hell a lot less impressive in the final output. We shall see how it’s going to be once in-game footage pops in, and I mean actual gameplay and performance.

    #28 2 years ago
  29. Dave Cook

@28 I’m curious as to why you despise Xbox 360. Not having a go at you, I’m just curious man, nothing more :)

I like to get inside how gamers think about titles and formats as it’s useful for writing our articles. The community on this site is a good place to get inside the mindset of the people I’ve found.

  30. Ireland Michael

So who is the guy with the messed up face supposed to be? Volgin? Decoy Octopus? Someone obvious I’m not thinking of? A completely new character?

@28 That’s one game. He was talking about games specifically made for it. There’s far little argument to be made against the fact that the PS3 is technically the more graphical impressive console of the two.

Impressive demo. The graphics are great, though this is nothing current gen hardware can’t go. Plenty of extremely low res textures are hidden under the graphical impressive atmospheric effect. Still looks great though. I definitely look the more realistic style they’re going for with this.

Movement looks hello more fluid, which is exactly what the series needs. It’s been stuck in the same old stiff, jilted movement since MGS1.

    #30 2 years ago
  31. Dave Cook

’30 I thought it could have been Volgin too, but I’m pretty sure they’re done with him now.

My theory is that – based on how old Snake looks when he takes the visor off – is that the guy in the hat is maybe a failed early prototype of the genome project. Hence looking all messed up.

I first thought Zero, but in MGS 4 Zero isn’t all burned and messed up. He’s just a vegetated old man.

    Hot Coldman?

    #31 2 years ago
  32. KAP

The more you work on an engine the better it looks, the PS2 era was testament of that.
Ubisofts engine “Anvil” back on AC1 was amazing for its time, now AC3′s “AnvilNext” can do stuff they never thought possible way back then, 2,000 NPC in a battle, wide open spaces vastly different climable terrain, weather effects wasn’t even phathomable back on AC1.. now look!

Everyones clammering for next gen, when in actual fact next gen is simply “perspective” in many ways.

“You only need imagination to build the world” – Me.

    #32 2 years ago
  33. Ireland Michael

@31 Yeah, you’re right. It’s definitely Hot Coldman. I was looking at concept sketches of him just now, and the hat is a dead giveaway.

    #33 2 years ago
  34. GwynbleiddiuM

@Dave, it’s a long story, it’s more due to the fact that I resent the day Microsoft entered home console market. After the failure of MSX they planned their comeback well. They blurred the lines of what made computer games and console games different. They engaged in rivalry with everyone else results pushed them to do the same. So then became the day that there were no distinguished difference between each platform, PC, PS3, Xbox… I will always have a deep respect for Nintendo, despite all that they managed to stay true to their path, they managed to stay unique and preserve their identity. That’s the story of my hatred for XBOX 360, or rather Microsoft.

There was a time when I enjoyed consoles and PC games differently, today I don’t really have a good reason to buy a console. You remember the PS2 age? It was fun, and unique and it mattered. I bought my PS3 this gen only to play MGS4, granted I played Uncharted games and God of War and Killzones and Resistances on it too. They were PS3 exclusives and they were great, especially GoW, Uncharted and MGS4, they had a bit of that old flavor in them.

And also I’m pissed at how cheap XBOX360′s build quality was, It gave me Red Ring of Death. It works and sounds like a dishwasher machine, when it reads discs in high speed, you’re always at the edge of your sit trying to find a safe cover in case it explodes in your face.

All these cheap marketing tactics gave them the edge they wanted to sell loads. And when you’re selling companies wont give a damn if your product is going to fall apart any moment. PS3 was expensive, but the build quality is legendary. Xbox was cheap and the build quality even cheaper.

Not sure if I gave you the information you were after, but that’s my story. :D

@Michael, I doubt that he’s Volgin, he was BIIIG, this one is your average joe. He might have tangled with Big Boss in the past but don’t think it’s Volgin. Maybe Coldman.

    #34 2 years ago
  35. Dave Cook

@34 nah that was a good response. I know what you mean about the level playing field. I love my Xbox 360 and PS3 the same as they both play home to unique games, but yes, Nintendo is the one that always does stuff different – for better or worse.

I’m not a fan of the way that with each new Nintendo format you can bank on there being a new Kirby game, new Zelda, new Mario, and more recently, a new Nintendogs, new brain training. Their lack of new IP irritates me as they used to be better at that back in the day. Their games are great of course, I’m just a staunch fan of new ideas :)

I’m excited to see what Microsoft and Sony do in the next gen. I genuinely believe we could see some radical new ideas emerging, and OUYA could be a neat prospect too. Open platforms breed innovation, so that’s definitely one to watch.

    Cheers man :)

  36. Kuwabara

I’m kinda surprised that they are releasing this game on ps3/this gen. Kojima once complained that he was only able to achieve a tenth of his desired goal, due to the capabilities of the ps3 being less powerful than he expected. So why release a game this gen? this fox engine must be that amazing if he can do a open world game with great graphics. Maybe he wants to take the crown away from naughty dog and have the best looking game.

    #36 2 years ago
  37. Ireland Michael

@36 Because only a shit developer needs powerful hardware to release a good game. Boasting about and overinflating the capabilities of something is pretty common, especially in this industry.

“A tenth of his desired goal” is just a number he pulled out of his ass.

They DID say several times that this was running on a PC with current gen specs. I don’t know if i believe it will really look like this on 360 and PS3 though,we’ll see.

    #39 2 years ago
  40. GwynbleiddiuM

@35 Well, I don’t really had any Nintendo consoles after SNES, just DSi, but you can see from the games they’re making they have a code, a certain principal, that even third party devs follow in order to have a successful title on a nintendo machine.

I just respect them for the effort.

And as for the second part of your comment, at the rate they’re going they’ll probably just kill it off. :P I think consoles will become the new cable. A subscription based service and interactable streaming. Well if buying off Gaikai and Onlive is any indication, things are heading toward another thing I don’t like, mainly because I’m using a 512kbps internet connection in 21st century, in a country that almost breathing is forbidden, and sanctions and trade restrictions are interfering with my current form of entertainment, let alone that I have to stream everything off internet, that’d be a day that I don’t want to live on this planet anymore.

@38 very funny, hurr hurr hurr. Attacking people’s character just because they know stuff that others don’t is completely new, haven’t been done before. I always loved MGS series for it’s story, and that makes me pay attention. I fail to see how that shows I’m in desperate need of going out more…

  41. Kuwabara

@37. Remember this quote after mgs4

“I remember saying three years ago that we wanted to create something revolutionary, but in reality we couldn’t really do that because of the CPU. We’re using the Cell engine to its limit., actually. Please don’t get me wrong, I’m not criticizing the PS3 machine, it’s just that we weren’t really aware of what the full-spec PS3 offered – we were creating something we couldn’t entirely see.”

If he really thinks mgs4 used up all the cell, how does he expect the new game to look better and be open world. Did mgs4 use a shitty engine?

    #41 2 years ago
  42. Dave Cook

@36 he stated at the event that he’s also working on a next gen Fox Engine game, which will probably be MGS5 proper, or that ZOE project.

    #42 2 years ago
  43. Dave Cook

@40 you’ve hit the nail on the head mate. I’m a firm believer in consoles moving to the wayside to make room for services. Imagine if Xbox 720 or whatever it’ll be called as a service, not a piece of hardware.

I’m only in favour of it if it’s like Spotify though. I don’t want publishers holding me to ransom for £60 games over the wire just because it’s the only way to get the content. They need to be smarter than that I think.

So like Spotify. Imagine paying £9.99 a month for Xbox Live if it meant you could stream every game that came out, ever. It won’t happen anytime soon as publishers still don’t ‘get’ the power that would have. They want all the revenue for themselves.

I don’t think that’s greed though. They’re business that exist to make money, so I can’t blame them, plus many of them are shit scared of how volatile and uncertain the industry is right now.

Once it’s all levelled off though, you will start to see some very interesting things happen in this space I’m sure.

@42, he said it should look like this on the ps3 /xbox, and it might be next gen too.

  46. Gekidami

Apparently Kojima said at the event that it was running on a PC with similar specs to a PS3, so it should look like this on that console.

    #46 2 years ago
  47. Clupula

The console I wonder about for this, to be quite honest, is the 360. I think the PS3 can pull these graphics off, considering some of the graphics I’ve seen in Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2 & 3, and Beyond: Two Souls. The 360 version, on the other hand, I imagine will either be dithered graphically or have to be some sort of 4 disc monster.

And as for games like Red Dead Redemption, it’s a commonly known fact that if your lead platform is the 360, the game will look lesser on PS3, whereas if your lead is PS3, you can usually get both versions looking equal (with the exception of Final Fantasy XIII, where the 360 version was seriously gimped graphically). The fact that they’re saying the PC they showed this on is equal to the PS3 specs says to me that they are most likely using the PS3 as the lead platform.

And as for the mystery characters, the burned man is Hot Coldman. The kid…my first guess would be Chico, but if this takes place as many years after Peace Walker as I think it does, shouldn’t Chico be an adult or, at least, late teenager by now?

    #47 2 years ago
  48. Ireland Michael

@41 Because he’s talking out of his ass.

    It’s caused hyperbole.

@43 That’s never going to happen. The licensing fees would be enormous, and half the devs would never see a return on their investment.

@47 It’s only set a few years after. It’s definitely Chico. It says as much.

    #48 2 years ago
  49. Clupula

@48 – but if it’s only a few years after, why is Big Boss so old? Considering how old Big Boss is, his hair shouldn’t have turned completely white in only 3 or 4 years after Peace Walker. 10, maybe. 15 maybe.

    #49 2 years ago
  50. Clupula

@41 – considering how many developers are still discovering how to get more and more power out of the Cell, to this day, I’d say maybe Kojima meant that he got as much power out of it as he could, at the time, with the knowledge he had then. He’s still had 4 years to figure out more things.

    I hope it’s exclusive for teh ps3.

Stupid MS with their stupid western audience. I miss the days of no online, disc read errors, clicking noises in mah dvd drive and inferior hardware dominating the market so much that companies could get away producing ‘games’ that would otherwise bomb on PC.

  52. Ireland Michael

@49 He’s not all that much older than he was in Peace Walker. He’s just going gray. His hair is for from gone “completely white”.

Its obvious the amount of testing of how the game works with all the varying hardware,OS,configurations where the console has set specs and doesn’r change at all nor do the developers have to worry about what other software is running while the game is playing.

  79. Gadzooks!

Some people talking out their ass about console power need to be reminded that the most technically accomplished console game by a pretty large margin is the Witcher 2.

I’ve played the best the PS3 has to offer an nothing comes close to the opening scene where you walk through the siege camp. Take the best scenes in Uncharted (which are mostly matte backgrounds or elaborate skyboxes, with a tiny play area), but then make them fully explorable and interactive.

The PS3′s crippling memory segregation makes large-scale games very difficult to pull off which is why PS3 exclusives are so lavish but narrow in scope. Uncharted, Killzone, Heavy Rain, GoW. All pretty games, but incredibly restrictive.

    #79 2 years ago
  80. Maximum Payne

@79 Did you play Bad Company 2 or Battlefield 3 ?
I am interested to know how does it look on consoles because 24 players, destruction, vehicles and big maps are not easy to render.

  81. Gadzooks!

I have played them, and visually they are good, but certainly not top-tier. That’s fine though, I’ll take physics, AI and scope over flashy visuals every time.

  82. TheOutcastWolf

This game look really promissing… but I hope the Xbox logo had nothing to do with it… MGS was supposed to be a PS exclusive and rarely a Nintendo game once in a while, MicroSoft will just hold this masterpiece down…

  83. SlayerGT

@79 What’s so “technically accomplished” about the Witcher 2? I have it but have yet to play it. I’m curious.

    #83 2 years ago
  84. TheOutcastWolf

@72 Mate you just went full casual, Witcher 2 is the worst rip-off butthurt game on the 360… but you all care more about shooting there right?

I really like all consoles but I hate MS, again, I like the 360, it can do good things, but sadly MS just keep pulling it down and making crappy sequels… And shall we remember they killed the best 3rd party company that ever walked on earth?

    #84 2 years ago
  85. freedoms_stain

    @83, Play it, it’s awesome.

I have it on PC so I have no idea what the hullabaloo is over the xbox version. Probably the best things in the game technically (for me) were the skeletal animations and character texturing. Character animation is incredibly fluid in the game, it’s like someone in the gaming industry finally realised the human spine doesn’t just have one pivot point somewhere near the rib cage and decided to give vertebrae a go. The skin textures are also incredibly life-like, people have pores and their scars don’t look drawn on. Geralt’s 100 year old battle scarred naked torso is a sight to behold let me tell you.

    #85 2 years ago
  86. Christopher Jack

Of course people like Gadzooks has to turn this into a console war “Xbox iz better cuz Witcher 2 lookz better den Uncharted 2″ Apples & Oranges. Then you have Da Man consistently going off topic to attack both a certain machine & its users. We get it, Sony touched you in a naughty place- we don’t care that 4 of your consoles broke. Do you have any idea how many Xbox 360s people have been through? No? Then stop being a fucking hypocrite.

Back to topic: Really nice looking game so far. Would have preferred that they released it on PC as well though.

    #86 2 years ago
  87. Kuwabara

if this game is supposed to release next year, you’d think they’d be showing off footage from a console. Also, i do believe the ps3 can handle this game as is. Just look at the dam ground textures and rocks. It needs improving. Is it hard to make watery /mud ? they need to look at naughty dog. Im guessing their visit to naughty dog last year was to learn from the masters. As for the lighting, i saw the same looking light effects in Beyond: , so yes i excpect the ps3 game to look the same if not improved.

    #87 2 years ago
  88. SlayerGT

@85 its on my list Freedoms. I heard it was good but I feel it will require Heavy Rain or Journey emotional investment. I have to be in the mood for an RPG much less one with enthalling story and scope. I sunk over 150 hours into Dragons Dogma over the summer but was easy since its just a really fun “B” grade adventure. I’ll get to it..if my 3rd Xbox doesn’t break *sarcastically winks at Da Man*

  102. Christopher Jack

@91. I didn’t even see that post but I would not have argued with it. I’ve been RRoD quite a few times & some of my previous 360s really did sound like they were preparing to launch. However, nor I or the original poster of that comment go into every article attacking the Xbox 360 & its users. It’s fair enough to criticize & debate, it’s how we as humans evolve.

Unfortunately neither you or Gadzooks do that, you troll & harass other commenters in an attempt to derail a thread & push your own Anti-Sony propaganda on us all. I don’t care that you hate Sony, I no longer even own any Sony console, but we just don’t want to hear it every thread…

Also to note, I’ve never had a problem- or know anyone who has with the PS2, nor do I know the statistics so I simply don’t comment on it. All I know is that Sony weren’t forced to cover a 3 year warranty so they couldn’t have been as bad as the X360s but that’s an assumption. Doesn’t matter either way, the PS2 is irrelevant to modern gamers. However I’ve been borrowing my sister’s lately to catch up on somethings that I’ve missed c:

  103. ManuOtaku

I dont going to say if is good or bad, but what Da Man and Gadzooks are doing on this thread or other Sony Threads is not any different than some commenters on every Nintendo Thread, they are not the only ones doing it, and yet they are the only ones being called out from doing it.
p.s no wonder why they are so defensive about it.

  104. Christopher Jack

I do like the way the fabrics blow in the wind. Too often, even in huge budget games, attention to detail is heavily overlooked & you end up with games that just don’t feel alive. While only small, having a cape or a baggy outfit that is just unnaturally static can kill the immersion somewhat. I mean, just look at the way the ranger armour moves in Fallout NV, it’s quite frankly disturbing.

    #104 2 years ago
  105. GwynbleiddiuM

I thought by now you learned that you shouldn’t quote or respond to Da Man, that’s what any sensible and sane person should do. But you ignore your brain’s advise and succumb to that urge, the need to enlighten his ignorant ass. Trust me, you were not the first, but as long as you pay attention to Da Man, he has the fuel to go on, you feed him, and he obliges.

@Da Man, as far as you quoting me goes, Dave Cook asked me a question and I answered, based on firsthand personal experience. I never said PS2 was build greatly, it’s ODD was a mess, and I had to buy a second one because at the end of its cycle, replacing an ODD was almost as expensive as buying a new one. So I bought a slim one a 2 years before PS3, and it never broke after that.

My problems with my PS2 was purely ODD based, my problems with my XBOX 360 was beyond just replacing the drives optical sensor, I had many issues and it finally died. So, I stand by my word, XBOX 360′s build quality is utter shit.
