Wasteland 2 development ‘kicking ass’ thanks to lack of corporate meddling – Fargo

Wasteland 2, the successful Kickstarter revival of Interplay’s Fallout predecessor is in development now and is ‘kicking ass’, according to InXile’s Brian Fargo. The reason? Independence and a lack of corporate interference.

In his keynote address to Unity conference Unite in Amsterdam, Fargo explained how this freedom bolsters development, “We’ve been working on Wasteland 2 for about 100 days, with no distractions from any kind of corporate overlord. “We have hundreds of pages of design done, we have our first music in, we have our basic UI up-and-running, and we’ve taken our first screenshots.”

Fargo concluded, “The bottom line is that, without any interruption, we’re kicking ass.” He’s right, as the project has amassed over a whopping $3 million in crowd funding, utterly smashing its initial target.

    Cool but what happened to the first super big Kickstarter game, the Double Fine on? I hope both of these turn out well because if either one of them fails, the rather promising KickStarter model will take a huge hit.

    However at the same time having corporate people breathing down your neck can be good.. not only in the sense that it puts more pressure to make sure the good is as good as possible but they can also put the brakes on extremely crazy stupid ideas which the devs might think would be fun however they could be just in over their heads and then the corporates bring them back down to earth.

    Well that’s how they should be :P

    I doubt that.

    An executive looks at what’s profitable, not fun, and I fail to see when they’ve ever made a contribution towards making something “as good as it can be”.

    Most of the time the executive touch has been pushing a game out before it’s done, like BF3 or The Saboteur, or Prototype. That’s not something a developer would ever willingly do, and I think it’s pretty obvious that those executives didn’t care about quality.

    If anything, I think the difference is between a studio that’s run by one guy, and a studio that’s able to draw on everyone under its roof.

    I think that’s a classic rule of leadership in any field. A leader can’t be expected to strike a perfect balance all the time, so he needs to have the wisdom, to allow the “lower” ranks to help him do it.

    Someone like Molyneux would do well to keep a couple of guys around to challenge everything he comes up with, because he’s obviously too passionate to really tell a good idea from a bad one.

    If you’re dumb, surround yourself with smart people. If you’re smart, surround yourself with smart people who disagree with you.
