Studio Liverpool was working on WipeEout PS4 before it closed – Report

Wednesday, 22nd August 2012 13:05 GMT By Dave Cook

WipEout was in development for PS4 before Studio Liverpool was closed today, a source has told Eurogamer.

The next-gen WipEout has been called, “dramatically different” by the source, and was said to have been some 18 months along in development.

The source also revealed that the studio was working on a game similar to Splinter Cell. The jury’s out on whether or not this was a continuation of Sony’s Syphon Filter series.

A separate Eurogamer source told the site that the second game used facial mo-cap techniques similar to LA Noire’s and started life as a gangster game before it went down the stealth route.

Unfortunately, all Studio Liverpool projects were cancelled by Sony when it closed the studio this morning.

18 months is very far along, especially when you consider that PS4 isn’t even announced or expected for another 12 months.

Mabye PS4 is destined for next year, after all.

Well its left to Thief to be the last bastion of Stelth it seems.

Fuck they never got to make anything other than Wipeout for such a long fucking time.

Sony can afford to buy Giakia, but can’t fund this studio for a freaken Wipeout game? They better make giakia worth the purchase, because it would seem like they have their priorities a bit mixed up.

#7 Agree OG and i hope this is more of a very well planed relocation of portafolio tittles or anything on those lines, because i fear if they want to go the microsoft route, i mean were games are not the primary focus.

@ #7 – Hear fucking hear. A good WipEout game is still a system seller for many people around the early 30′s age bracket, Sony would’ve done well to remember that.

A bunch of PS4 games canned? With any luck this means the PS4 will be canned too.

Ideal situation: Sony pull out of US and Europe, regroup in Japan and start making good games again. Go smaller budget and focus on the thing they lost this gen – gameplay. No need for new hardware to do that.

The shallow shite they put out this gen simply isn’t good enough.

    Keep hoping. Aint gonna happen.
Its obvious that almost every studio sony owns is working on a ps4 game. But its cleaning baffling why sony closed one of its most consistent studios. London studio was far less prolific than them. If anyone had to face the axe, they were better candidates than liverpool.
Waiting to hear more on this topic. Looks like there’s more than what meets the eyes.

FUck. this makes me think PS4 is coming sooner than we thought and Last Guardian will be a PS4 launch title. Oh well, I’d buy it for sure!

Maybe Manu is right Drag, maybe we will see them shift around projects/staffers. I can’t imagine Sony not doing Wipeout.

Wipeout PS4 is for 18 months in developement and they close this superb studio? Reminds me of SWBF III. What is wrong with the gamingworld?

It was a very odd decision. WipeOut IS PlayStation.

didn´t they say the games sector will be the most important for them in the near future?
@Kabby: be carefull with the”…IS…” stuff. we broke a thread record recently and the …IS… stuff was kinda playing a role for that too.
i agree though, very odd decision.
i don´t think they will drop the whole franchise…if so, that would be just plain stupid. why making an all stars brawler when you even drop one of your stars? not fair. but hey, they raped resistance too with bullshit skies…i am not bashing here, even if it might sound like it. i just cannot understand that decision, but hey what do i know about the sony masterplan ;)

And so, another long line up of gamecompanies my heart went out to. I am really saddened by this new. Wipeout… The name alone brings out the same feeling I have with F-Zero: fast, good, fun and AWESOME.

Why is Sony doing this? Why not close the division and continue with atleast that project? :S

Hmmmm…this makes me sad as Wipeout is one of the few racing games I really enjoy. They could cancel Gran Turismo tomorrow and I wouldn’t give a shit, but this bums me out. I wonder what the sales numbers for 2048 were and if they were lower than expected, if that has anything to do with it.
