PS4 to support 4K resolution – rumor

Wednesday, 22 August 2012 21:42 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

PS4 is rumored to support 4K resolution playback, according to a report on BGR. The report cites a source who said it’s just one of the tech incentives Sony will offer to get consumers to upgrade. Sony’s first step, according to the report, is the selling of 4K Blu-ray players which it’s already doing, and the next is the upcoming 80-inch XBR LED television set, which supports 4K resolution, or 3096 x 3072. The next PlayStation model will be step three, if the report is accurate. Sony has not announced its next console. Thanks, AGB.

What means that “playback”? Its sure PS4 will adopt the 4K standard, in video/movie/photo. In videogames, we could saw dedicated PSN games, something like Wipeout 4K, but its clear that 1080p+60Hz[+3D] will be the full standard for all games.

    Im wrong?

Why bother? We’ve yet to get 1080p as a proper standard, never mind 4k.

Makes sense, Sony needs to get 4k into homes somehow.

This is par for the course with Sony consoles…

    PS2 – DVD
    PS3 – Bluray
    PS4 – 4k

It helps them ensure that most Playstation owners will then potentially buy new TVs aswell or start using the new media format.

Even if this is true it won’t be for games anyway. Who is going to have a monitor that supports the resolution? And for games to support that resolution you’d need much more space to store bigger files and hardware power to render games with that resolution.

    #9 3 years ago
  10. JRNO

I suppose it doesn’t hurt to have it support 4K resolutions, but I seriously doubt we’ll be seeing any more 4K content than we have today aside from showroom demos in the next few years.

  11. Gadzooks!

There’s no way you can trust Sony to follow through with tech promises anyway. 1080p 120fps and dual monitors was what PS3 was supposed to have.

If PS4 did launch with 4k support they would probably find a way to remove it and blame it on piracy or some other shit reason. (OtherOS, PS2 BC, USB ports, Card reader).

Would be a big step forward from the PS3 if the rumors are true. The only problems that I could see with this is that 4K isn’t even the visual standard for most TV’s yet (at least an affordable one). If at least they can make all of their future games run at 1080P standard, then that’d be at least a good start for the next-gen Playstation, and 4K would be a nice way to really future proof the device, once the TV market’s caught up in affordability. I just hope that it doesn’t turn into a niche thing with Sony, like a lot of their products can be.

Post #3 – Gad +1, Sony needs to stop putting more tech in shit then the mass market wants or needs. It only drives up the price with stuff that most people don’t care about.

But could just be a rumor. Couldn’t it?

And here is another thing: If the current trend holds, then 3rd parties will stay with a multiplat strategy. If so, will they(multiplat pubs, like EA/acti) just keep the same res as their xbnxt version? The lowest common denominator wins again.

But the more I think about it, the less likly I think 4K rez will be.

    #20 3 years ago
  21. Digital Bamboo

Seems like something Sony might do.

Push 4K, even though most people won’t have a TV capable of supporting 4K for several years. Release a few showcase titles at launch, while the majority of developers make games at 1080p.

Not that I’m complaining, I hope they do make it future-proof, so that 5 years after launch, about the time I buy one, 4K TV’s should be somewhat affordable & 4K games more abundant.

  22. Dragon246

Again the same haters spray shit. It says it will support 4k , not make it mandatory, because it can’t as 4k res for games will obscene amounts of raw power that’s just not possible yet. For what you know, it can support a goddamn theatre. My guess is that its probably for movie buffs. Again it says playback, so itz probably movies.
    @Monkeyg,
    DVD, BLU RAY, 4k?

With Drag on this one too:

I would like to here from Erth too, I learn a lot from that guy. … Really not kidding lol. Really. He knows his stuff. My understanding tho, is that it will tax the hardware to put it out in 4K. I was hoping for across the borad MS/Sony wise 1080P and 60fps. Does 4K mean only 30fps? Honestly don’t know.

But it seems to me that offering 4K when next to no one has 4K is silly and about one gen ahead of its time. At least. In fact, you could agrue that BluRay was one gen ahead of its time. I know a lot of folks that own PS3s for BR, I also know a lot of folks that don’t give two hoots about BR at all. I am one of those btw, I still buy SD. 480P is great in my book(for movies).

Kind of waiting for Erth on this one too.

Also modern graphics cards support 4k using multiple monitors . It may just mean they are using latest variants of graphics cards.

  25. fearmonkey

Being a techie, I find the 4K rumors facinating.

The question is what 4k standard are they going to use, are they doubling HD and doing the 3840×2160 which is also called QFHD, or are they meaning the 4K video standards which come in different resolutions. This could just mean that the PS4 will support 4K blu-ray (if thats what they call it)

The xbox 360 renders most games sub 1080p and some even sub 720p but uses a scaler to render it to the higher res, so thats a possibility I guess.

We are just now seeing 2500+ resolutions in PC monitors on its way to becoming the norm. Thanks to Apples retina screens and the OLED screens we are seeing higher resolutions in small spaces. I guess Sony is counting on the market to explode with these same size screens but much higher resolutions, and doubling HD video to QFHD.

If the New ipad can display an image of 2048×1536 on a 9.7 inch screen using a quadcore GPU, it doesn’t sound impossible for a console GPU to render 4K resolutions, either by adding cores, adding another GPU for SLI, or using a scaler.

    #25 3 years ago
  26. Lightmanone

    First of all. 4K resolution isn’t: 3096 x 3072. It’s “3996 × 2160″ (check wiki if you don’t believe me.) Anyway.
This is a logical step for Sony. In 2 year times, the tech will be upgraded in such a way that it will be almost “cheap” enough for custumors to buy such TV’s. In 3 years time, more people will buy it, the prices will then drop even more. In 5 years time, 20% of the people who own HD TV’s will have a 4K TV. (i most likely will be one of them at that time.)
If the PS4 will support that resolution, that would simply be awesome :)
It’s only logical this would be the next step.

    Oh an in comparison: 1920×1080 = 2Megapixel resolution. 4K = 8 Megapixel. Such a big upgrade ^^;

Also: full 4K apurture is even larger: “4096 × 3112″ Or roughly 12MP.

  27. Digital Bamboo

Some good points OG & Drag:

I think games in 1080p at 60fps is a reasonable expectation for PS4. The 4K support would likely be for blu-ray movies. If someone does pull off a 4K game, it would almost certainly mean a slash in frame rate.

Now, will it be able to upscale 1080p to look like 4K? I doubt it. Seems like too big a leap. PS4 would have to be a beast, then again, it just may be.

  28. SlayerGT

I read one playstation news story and the comment’s section mostly says, “the current Gen consoles are outdated”. I see this article and think, “oh this should make a few folks excited”. I don’t sit on Sony board of directors nor do i know shit about business. But i do know, as a consumer, I’ll take whatever they think should go in the box. Call it future proofing, call it an attempt to sell 4k tvs..just make it valuable and I’m on board. Might even get one of them there 4k tvs. From what i read in the forums..better graphics make games better??

    #28 3 years ago
  29. Clupula

This makes complete sense. Just like they did with DVD’s and Blu-Ray, and to a lesser extent, 3D, Sony will have this on the system, and eventually, it’ll become the norm. As was said above, when the 360 launched, no one really had an HDTV yet. Now, it’s harder to find someone without one than with.

I’m glad to see that they’ll be pumping up the graphics, honestly, as I’d like to see a noticeable difference between PS3/PS4, just as there was one with PS2/PS3. Either way, my 20 exclusive games rule will still apply before I pick one up.

Exactly true. Somehow logic from evades some minds here.

Also tech grows at a much faster rate than we presume. So its logical to make devices future proof.

  31. xxJPRACERxx

It’s only for movie playback. And considering they now want consoles to last 10 years I think they want to be prepared.

You don’t need a lot of power to play a movie at 4k. You need lot of space and a fast drive.

    #31 3 years ago
  32. Christopher Jack

So much ignorance being vomited around. No! You will NOT be playing Uncharted 4 & Killzone 4 in 4K. It clearly states PLAYBACK, not gameplay. It’s obviously about VIDEO playback. The same way the PS3 currently supports 4k images. Gosh! So many people jumping to the wrong conclusion then criticizing something they don’t understand… especially aimed at gadzooks who still fails to grasp the true meaning of criticism & mistaking it for trolling.

  33. Erthazus

Fucking retards at best. 4K resolution does not mean that PS4 will support it in games. 1080p is probably what this machine will do at best for next gen games with 30 fps.

4K movies? Yeah. Why not? Sony will probably go for 10 life cycle.

I can’t wait for 4K res in my games on my PC. I don’t play in 1080p anymore. I use only 2560×1440 resolution/60 FPS and it is beautiful. 4K image is just super mindblown-ish i guess. I’m satisfied to be honest with my res.

this sounds a lot like sony…but i am not sure if this is a good thing. i am not a graphics over gameplay gamer. never was. for multiplat i cannot see 4k happening in a long long time either. but this is sony at it´s best really. they always push the newest tech in order to sell all their other hardware too. it didn´t work so well with the 3d tv´s though and sony said they wanted to focus more on games now as one of their core markets didn´t they? i am not saying all this is a stupid idea, i am just not seeing it working out too well in order to earn lots of cash with the ps4´s…

    #36 3 years ago
  37. monkeygourmet

    @31

    Your such a tool aren’t you…

I never assumed 4k would be used for gaming…

The PS3 cost a bomb at launch, how much would that make the PS4?!

Ensuring Playstation consoles match up with there latest media format is usually reserved for Playback ONLY…

Sorry i didn’t break that down completly for you, maybe a bit tetchy and defensive are we?

previously listing 2 media formats then 4k, i would have hoped you could have worked out i was refering to 4k for playback but obviously not.

Of course Sony use the Playstation brand to advertise it’s new media formats, If you had X amount of million people buying a device, it would be terrible business to not try to make them upgrade their media formats or TV / Audio hardware, considering Sony…

    SELL ALL THOSE DEVICES TOO…

It’s not a bad thing, it’s just business, yet you seem to think it’s an attack on your precious Sony company…

Man, get over it… MS tried the same thing with HD, it was worth a shot but obviously Sony having a Bluray player in the PS3 gave it a massive beatdown.

Sony have always made devices that push new media on people, thats just their business strategy.

It’s not about gaming though, we have still yet to see a game on the PS3 that uses the bluray in any truely groundbreaking way.

The problem is not with Sony using new media formats, it’s the idiots thinking it’s going to make the games a shit load better…

If supporting 4K playback means they stick more GPU memory in the machine then that’s good for games. They won’t run at 4K but would benefit from the extra memory.

1080p/60fps – unfortunately not likely for a lot of games. Simply because people are graphics whores and will buy based on how a game looks in stills. A game running at 1080p/30fps can spend more on frippery and niceties. Maybe there won’t be so much difference next time round and they will target 1080p/60fps. Would be nice if a manufacturer stuck their neck out and made it a requirement.

HDTV, so many people rushed to get them when the HD consoles were out. I know i spent ages saving up for a 37inch in my room at the time.
Then 3D came out and they wanna push people into buying that, no thanks. Not a lot did get the 3D tvs but now they are gonna wanna push 4K, so in the space of less than 10yrs people could have gone through 4TVs

4K for games is still a ways off, certainly at least another generation at 60fps.

Playback though, I could see it (HDMI 1.4 supports 4K).

Erth doesn’t know as much as ye think btw, I’d to explain the correlation between fps and refresh rates to him a while back (though he refused to believe he was wrong, of course).
Also, his explanations can be boiled down to “consoles are shit” most of the time.

@45 Amen, Erth pipes up a lot of stuff he doesnt know about, Think he might have been banned though because this is the exact type of article you’d expect to see him in, Thank God!

Anyhoo i highly doubt 4k will be possible for games. Getting it there for playback of videos is probably what there aiming for.

I imagine All next gen games will be 1080p 60 FPS, maybe even 120fps, The machines will definately be able to handle that.
Especially the PS4 assuming they are going to carry on pushing 3D.
If so it should be supporting 1080p 3D 60 fps, thats allready half way to 4K.
And if its only supporting 4K playback, not gameplay, Then this is the ballpark of power they should be aiming for.

Thats my assumption for next gen.
    PS4, 3D 1080p 60 fps, for non-3D games 1080p 80-120Fps,
    With 4k video playback capable

ah come on erth aint that bad..maybe he should join some anger management meetings from time to time or practice some yoga or whatever helps to calm down a little but i would really miss him here…
and fin, how often did i see you refusing to be wrong? somtimes there just is no right or wrong anyway. your opinions can be boiled down to “nintendo is shit”…most of the time.

“4K for games is still a ways off, certainly at least another generation at 60fps.”

i agree with you this time though

    @42

    What… Are you crazy…?

At first I referred to 4k in relation to media, you came back with its not going to be for gaming…

Next, I mentioned that they couldn’t use 4k for gaming because it would be too expensive obviously… Then you mentioned it was cheap enough for media….

    Fecks sake, stay on topic!

I wasn’t really talking about either of those things anyway…

I was referring to media in the first place and how Sony like to push new media to encourage upgrades.

Why can’t you grasp that simple fact? Oh yeah, because you have your Sony blinkers on again…

    “Defend, defend, that’s all I know…!”
