Diablo 3 patch 1.04: Blizzard addresses unbalancing concerns

Diablo 3 patch 1.04 will give players the ability to overpower their characters by augmenting them with 100 new Paragon levels, enhanced buffs and gear, and much more. Blizzard's game director Jay Wilson has explained why making players overpowered isn't an issue.

In a PC Gamer interview, Wilson stated, "Diablo is a very different game than World of Warcraft or StarCraft 2. It’s a lot more of the player against the world, and a lot of the goal of the game is to make sure that the player feels awesome."

"So, as a game," Wilson continued, "we’re a lot less concerned that the player be perfectly balanced against the environment. We’re kind of okay if the players run roughshod over the monsters. We don’t want the game to be unchallenging, but, you know, being a little overpowered is kinda what Diablo’s always been about."

Wilson also admitted that Paragon levels probably will lead to areas that will need nerfed or buffed up further after launch, but stressed that the ability to tweak is the beauty of a PC game like Diablo 3.
