Gamescom 2012 attracts 275,000 visitors, next year's dates set

Careful ticketing and event management prevented a repeat of last year's massive crush, but gamescom 2012 still attracted over 275,000 attendees.

In a press release, gamescom organisers said over 600 exhibitors packed out the 140,000 square metres of floor space; the space was upped by 15% from last year.

Koelnmess esecutive director Catherine C. Hamma said the venue had taken steps to ensure ticketing was smooth and attendee numbers were kept manageable.

On top of the 275,000 happy consumers, a repeat of last year's effort, 24,500 trade visitors attended the event, up 14% on last year, as well as 5,300 journalists. General attendees came from 83 countries, as opposed to 2011's 71, suggesting gamescom is reaching further than ever before, and press arrived from 54 countries.

The convention also brought plenty of visitors into surrounding districts Neumarkt, Rudolf and Friesenplatz, where festival events including a 13 band concert attracted 120,000 attendees.

The next gamescom is scheduled for August 21 to August 25, 2013.
