Dark Horse Books and Nintendo have announced The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia, which contains a vast collection of historical information on The Legend of Zelda franchise, will be localized and released in the west in January. The hardcover compilation contains never-before-seen concept art, the full history of Hyrule, the official chronology of the games, and and introduction by Shigeru Miyamoto. As a bonus, The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia includes an exclusive comic by The Legend of Zelda manga creator Akira Himekawa. It will run you $34.99.

I think I prefer the pre-Ocarina visions of Hyrule fleshed out in the various comics and, yes, even that terrible cartoon that we all loved so much as children.

I wouldn’t object to this if it put to rest the obviously nonsensical and increasingly absurd myth (kept alive by Nintendo) that there’s only one Zelda story and one version of the characters and the various games are selected parts of a master timeline kept under Miyamoto’s mattress.

Unfortunately, the opposite is likely to be the case.
