PC version of Minecraft has sold over 7 million copies

Monday, 13th August 2012 23:15 GMT By Debabrata Nath

The PC version of Mojang’s indie sensation Minecraft has passed another major sales milestone.

The sandbox indie adventure has sold over 7 million copies on PC alone.

The news was shared by Mojang’s business developer Daniel Kaplan via a tweet.

“More than 7 million minecraft (pc) copies sold,” he said, and also thanked its fans via another tweet. “Thank you all Minecrafters around the world showing such dedication and support.”

Minecraft also has a Xbox 360 version which recently crossed the 3 million units sold mark and currently sells around 17,000 copies daily.

    In a few months the X360 version has sold half of what the pc version has used years to sell. I knew pc gaming was going down the drain but this is just crazy.

    @1 It’s also the fastest selling XBLA game of all time and became the best selling XBLA game in under a month.

    The more front loaded sales are to be expected considering that when the XBLA version was released there was already a tonne of hype around the game, where as the PC version built up slowly over time. The PC version has been sitting at 10-15k per day for the last year.

    Also 3 million is not half of 7.

    Anyway the sales of the game are amazing for both platforms. Very few games sell over 10 million copies even on PC/360/PS3 combined, Borderlands sold 4.5m+ across all three platforms and was considered a runaway success for example, Bioshock managed 4m across all three, Resident Evil 5 across all three managed 5.8m to become the best selling entry in the series etc

    @1 I’m not quite sure how you managed to get to the idea of PC gaming “going down the drain” from the news that a PC game has sold 7 million copies. That is a frankly staggering number.

    @1 The facts have already been stated, so I’ll just echo this: You’re an idiot.

    @3 Troll be trolling. It’s actually pretty common for PC versions to outsell the ones on either console.

    It’s not coincidental that EA are launching their own storefront and focusing on that market.

    @2 But Minecraft also cost 15 euro initially. Not exactly AAA.

    @1, the vast majority of Minecraft PC sales have occurred in the last 18 months (6 million of the 7 million) and around 2.5 million since the start of this year. “Years”. Yeah. Years.

    @5 True but if you compare the game to games of a similar price the picture is even better for Minecraft TBH.

    The point was that even AAA games with massive marketing budgets often don’t even do half of what Minecraft has done, in terms of units sold. In terms of profit margins Minecraft is insane.

    If we compare the sales of other indie and budget releases, we have things like Super Meat boy with 1 million, most of which were on PC, Trials HD with 2 million, Trials Evolution with 2 million, From Dust managed 500k+ on consoles unknown how the PC version sold, Bastion did 500k+ on PC/360 with ~200k on XBLA, ‘Splosion Man did 500k on XBLA, Shadow Complex 600k, Torchlight 1 million, . And most of those games are a lot cheaper than Minecraft is now.

    Minecraft has incredible sales on both platforms no matter the metric you measure it against.

    @7 sad to hear, I hoped Bastion sold better. Best Story Game ever.

    @7 Oh definitely, I wasn’t shooshing it.

    It’s certainly also a perfect example of what can happen when you’re able to publish whatever you want on a platform, without having to jump through hoops or kneel to anyone.

    @8 Not that the games are in any way related, but the narrator from Bastion is currently doing voiceover work for Wadjet Eye Games.

    He’s in Resonance:

    And apparently also the upcoming Primordia, just announced:

    @1 lol.

    It didn’t strike you as anything of value that while your touting Console, and bashing PC the game in question would never have made it to a console had it not been a hit on PC first?

    Hits Minecraft are one of the reasons people boast on PC indies so much. Silly troll.

    @8 don’t worry Bastion was very profitable, enough so that they can self fund their next game from the profits.
