Bungie founder calls analogue shooters on touch screen devices ‘braindead’

Bungie founder, and founder of new mobile studio Industrial Toys Alex Seropian has revealed that developers should stop lazily porting genres from consoles to touch screen devices like iPad, especially if the control method doesn’t fit. He’s talking about shooters of course.

Speaking with, Seropian explained, “To make a good shooter you have feel like you have a lot of control, you need enough bandwidth in the skill curve so that you feel you can get good at it, that you can master it.”

“The traditional shooter on the PC,” Seropian continued, “where you have a mouse and you can touch any pixel and shoot it – it’s all about that. Having a joystick where you have to push the cursor towards that pixel is so much more of a challenge.”

“So much work and research went into making sticks feel good for a shooter that to reinterpret that on a device where you can touch any pixel is just brain dead, I don’t get that.”

“Our approach is really built toward the device. Our ambition is to reinvent what a shooter is, with touch as the starting point. Some of that methodology trickles down to putting the controls in the game-space, not on the screen space so when you want to interact with the character in the game – to shoot or take cover or snipe – that’s all through interacting with things in the environment rather than through controls.”

What do you think of shooters on touch devices? Do they work, or are they slapdash? Let us know below.

IMO, the best touch screen games only require one finger.

I completely agree with what this chap is saying.

Analogue shooters on touch devices are the typical example of trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.

    It. Does. Not. Fit.

Yet, people still keep on trying and like any good woodworker knows, if you try and grind something that is simply not meant to be, the end result is somewhat of a mess.

Oh, look at that; a woodworking allegory in a games post.

I knew there was a reason why I don’t imbibe coffee from 2:30PM onwards.

And in fact nothing can get anymore annoying that that. My boss spends a lot of good hours on his Galaxy Note playing that annoying as fuck Frontline Commando, that annoys me a lot.

    That game is disturbing.

Newsflash. Joypads/sticks are pretty sub-optimal for FPS games too. Doesn’t stop people playing them, does it?

Straight ports are obviously pretty sloppy but there is scope to add new features for touch.
