SWTOR’s transition to F2P was the “right decision,” says SOE president

In a Ask me Anything thread on Reddit, SOE president John Smedley said SWTOR’s transition to F2P was the “right decision.”

“It is the only way to go for new games,” he said. “It was the right decision for SWTOR – which is a fantastic game.”

Smedley also said the firm is working on “undisclosed IPs” in addition to Plaentside 2, which goes into beta on Monday.

“Wait untill you see our next round of games after PS2,” he said, adding that he has worked closely with the team on the design of Planetside 2.

Who knows what Smedley says. He is an utter tool. Yesterday he again repeated claims how bad their decision was (with LucasArts) to turn Star Wars Galaxies into WoW. 6 years too late.

The one thing this week that has risen from the ashes of SWTORs failure to capture a good side player base – are the stupid editorials about how F2P is the only way for MMOs.

Going F2P isnt a guarantee of anything if you have a poor product. Maybe folk should just look at how dull the MMO genre is right now. If Star Wars Galaxies was released today as a sandbox with some themepark elements, I believe it would have given WoW a run for its money
