Borderlands 2 has 200-300 enemy types, and much smarter this time out

Jasper Foreman, lead AI programmer at Gearbox, has said enemies in Borderlands 2 will be much smarter than they were in the first Borderlands, and there will be 15-20 separate enemies with many variants.

This means, there will be around 200-300 enemy types to blow away.

Speaking with Joystiq, Foreman said two upgraded enemy classes are returning - Skags and Bandits - each with some aforementioned variants.

New enemy types include Threshers and the Goliath, along with robots from Handsome Jack's army.

The robots will come in a variety of flavors such as battle-oriented Loaders, the tankihs WAR Loader and the BUL Loader which mush like a Transformer, can turn itself into a bulldozer.

Other enemy bot types include Surveyors which repair robots you've damaged, and Constructors which can create other robots in the middle of the battlefield.

Borderlands 2 is out in September on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
