The Banner Saga dev blog shows first combat field

Thursday, 26th July 2012 02:56 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Until now we’d mostly seen character and landscape assets from the ex-BioWare team behind indie strategy RPG The Banner Saga. Behold: an in-game screenshot.

The image isn’t actually finished – the art director noted that it’s still in need of “flickering torches, glowing embers, smoke and snow crawling across the screen, and of course, the parallaxing” – and in one other very important way, it’s not indicative of the finished game.

“This combat board is for our tutorial combat, where the player is learning how the mechanics work. It’s a tiny combat board. It is in no way indicative of the average size of the combat boards in the game. Different battles will vary in size, but I don’t think we have any others this small,” Stoic Studio revealed.

The Bannered Saga will release in two waves; first as a free-to-play, combat only title, and later as a full RPG with a price tag.

Thanks, Kotaku.

It looks good but.. why zoomed out!? That’s the opposite of an immersive experience.

@1, if this is a “tiny” combat board thin it suggests there are much bigger ones which would necessitate the ability to zoom in and out in order to keep tabs on the battle at large, why show a zoomed out version? So you can actually see what the game looks like and not just 5 figures standing on a grid.

@2 But I’m not talking about other possible boards. I’m talking about this one. Please don’t digress!

@3, I answered you on why this one is zoomed out “why show a zoomed out version? So you can actually see what the game looks like and not just 5 figures standing on a grid.”, everything else I said was an explanation that zooming in and out of the board was a likelihood, I did not digress.
