Co-op added to Dead Space 3 so you don’t have to be scared alone

Friday, 20th July 2012 14:11 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

EA’s marketing boss Laura Miele has said Visceral Games made Dead Space 3 a co-op affair after research proved gamers were a bit to scared to go it alone in the franchise.

Speaking with MCV, Miele said: “We were doing research coming out of Dead Space 1 and 2 and we’re really proud of those products. We received feedback to understand how we can take the game out to even more consumers,” she stated.

Miele assured the horror if Dead Space is “still there” in the third entry of the series, and while it remains “true to its roots and is no less scary,” people felt far more comfortable playing it with someone else than on their own.

“We were hearing feedback that they love the thriller game, but it was pretty scary, and the obvious next step was that they wanted to play with someone. So we introduced co-op into the game.

“Personally, I would rather go to scary movie with my husband rather than sit at home with the lights out watching one on my own,” she said. “We’re looking for that to reach out to consumers that perhaps were not open to Dead Space 1 and 2.”

    Fixed.
Honestly, the only thing that actually worked from a horror point of view was the scene in the elevator at the beginning. The rest was what 4 year old girl thinks horror is.

Its insane that people to this day still dont seem to understand that single player for this is actually single player we all know and love.

I for one think this co-op mode didnt need to be implimented but glad it is for a second playthrough etc

I just wonder though who is actually gonna play this co-op on there first playthrough?

If i dont recall wrong, on a previous 24/7 post regarding the co-op for this game, the developer clearly indicated dead space co-op will be handled differently than normal co-op, just in order to keep the terror levels high, if thats the case iam not against it, i hope the co-op is so different as the multiplayer of assasins creed was different from common FPS multiplayer tropes, if it is like that it will be great IMHO.

HAHAHAHHA – Dead Space 1 and 2 were basically action games… In no way were they horror or even remotely scary. You want to be scared? Go play Amnesia. TONS of people barely make it 2 hours in that game, yet you don’t see Frictional Games putting co-op in A Machine for Pigs.

The truth is that EA wasn’t satisfied with the way it was selling as a multi-platform title, so they figured if they would make it more dynamic and action packed while focusing less on horror so it will sell better to the “dude bro’s”.

The reason why people didn’t want co-op is exactly because they want to be scared alone and want EA to concentrate on SP.

I honestly can’t wait wait for this game. Dead Space has always been focused on action horror vs psychological horror like AMnesia or SIlent Hill series. The game will be different from when you are playing SP to when you have a friend join which is a perk to the game. I liked Resident Evil 5 for what it was especially with the co op component.

Everyone should stop dissing dead space 3 because of the 2-player function. THE GAMES NOT EVEN OUT YET HOW DO YOU KNOW ITS BAD? The co-op isn’t even necessary to play the game; their is an entirely different campaign for single players, so why would you get mad about something you dont even have to use? Wait for the game to come out, play it in single- and multi-player, and then whine about how “two players isn’t scary,” but some people might actually like to play this great game with a friend.

^ Are you with EA trying to defend a title on core sites? And how can you know it’s a “great” game?

Same reason why people are saying its a horrible game. Can’t tell yet but since the co op and sp are different makes it seem more promising than that of RE5.

Well, the covershooting gameplay makes it less promising, imo.
