The Walking Dead’s zombies can hear and smell you

Terminal Reality plans to have the enemies in its shooter take on The Walking Dead behave like those in the HBO show – which means they will track you down however they can.

Writing on the EU PS Blog, creative lead Angel Gonzalez said players won’t be able to go in gung ho and expect to survive.

“When referencing the show, one of the things that stood out to us was how the Walkers reacted to sound; they were suspicious of gunfire. Seeming to know that only humans were able to wield weapons, the Walkers instinctively moved toward the sounds people made,” he said.

“They are also attracted to other sounds, so someone moving through that world needs to be aware of the amount and type of noise they make at all times. We’re crafting our Walkers to react the same way. In the game, you’ll need to carefully sneak into and out of some dangerous situations and you may meet a few Walkers along the way. If you show up with guns blazing, you’ll quickly find yourself dealing with a much larger crowd and you could easily become overwhelmed.”

If that weren’t awesome enough on its own, Terminal Reality is also exploring a realm games rarely wander into: scent.

“Walkers also have the ability to tell the living from the dead by their sense of smell. Humans give off a scent that the Walkers can detect, and the longer we stand still (like when we are looking at a shelf for supplies) the larger the radius of that scent becomes,” Gonzalez said.

“Stand still for too long and a Walker shambling down the street looking for a meal might just discover you standing inside a store. Our goal in creating our Walkers is to make them as living (or, actually, as undead) as they are portrayed in the series. They see you, smell you, and hear you, and they won’t stop until they find you.”

Woah, okay, you’re selling me now. The Activision-published shooter is expected on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2013.

What? Walking Dead is not on Hbo nor was it ever.

This interviewee is trying to over sell his game. If you look at their previous games I would doubt they will be able to get to making it a COD zombie game.

Maybe, but would Activision really put a brand this large and popular into the hands of a dev they know would butcher it? Actually, they would probably sell millions based on the brand name mixed with FPS alone.

I do hope this turns out better than literally everyone thinks it will.

They already did look at the studio’s previous games none of them are that good even Star Wars Kinect was utter crap and that was a bigger brand than Walking Dead.

@3 Is this a trick question?

This is Activision. They shovel off whatever they can to whomever is available to do it at the time, and they don’t give a rat’s ass about the quality of the final product as long as it sells.

Is this going to be an open-world game or something? I figured it would be completely linear and scripted like every other Activision game. Of course, they could just go the L4D route and spawn zombies based on noise and scent levels.

If they can hear and smell me like in the series then surely If i just hide and be quiet they will walk straight past me. Thinking of the freeway scene where they hid.

    ejams said it.

Really though, I think it does sound pretty great to try and build an actual AI around zombies. That’s really what all of these otherwise good games are missing.

The witch in L4D was always great fun. Classic noob check (that I failed a million times over).

I think games like Zomboid are a better way to go. Or even Rebuild. That’s really the intelligent part about the whole zombie apocalypse theme, actually surviving. Instead, this is going to be about the combat, and you already have L4D and Killing Floor doing a great job of that.
