Rumor – Solid Snake to return in next Metal Gear Solid game

Wednesday, 20th June 2012 16:30 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

The July issue of IG Magazine is rumored to feature an interview with Hideo Kojima in which he claims Solid Snake will return in the next installment of Metal Gear Solid.

According to the French magazine, Kojima said: “About Metal Gear Solid 5, I can tell you two things: there will be much question of infiltration, espionage, and convincing people to give you ‘a favour’ like in the last Metal Gear Solid.

“I liked the idea of social interactions in Deus Ex: Human Revolution, but we will see. And if I say more, the female ninja public relations officer, who is behind the door, I will be carved up into pieces. So it’s better that we meet again when the time comes to talk about Metal Gear Solid 5.”

Kojima was also to have said in the interview Metal Gear Solid 5  will be built with the “new FOX Engine,” and that “Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance never claimed to be a Metal Gear Solid,” as the game is not about Snake.

“It is a spinoff that tries something different,” Kojima was to have said. “We have not yet finished with Solid Snake, despite the fact that I wanted to let him die at the end of Guns of the Patriots.”

Now, calm your blood pressure folks, because this is marked as “rumor” for many reasons: Konami has declined comment on the matter; IG Magazine’s website doesn’t reference an interview with Kojima for the July issue; the magazine is written mainly by freelancers with no one available for comment on the matter; and lastly, the quotes were translated from French to English and we all know things can get lost in translation easily.

We’ll update you if Konami comments on the matter.

Thanks, CVG.

    Never trust cross-language rumours, something’s always lost in translation.

    While your at it, Revengeance isn’t a word. Can you do something about that?

    I’ve just checked the original French text and nothing was lost in translation. Kojima is really talking about MGS5.

    @8: Exactly my thoughts.

    Also, “Kojima was also to have said … that “Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance never claimed to be a Metal Gear Solid,” as the game is not about Snake.”

    What was MGS3 then?

    @11: Considering they genetically look the same (both Snake and Naked Snake) and that everyone came from Naked Snake, then of course MGS3 is still considered a “Metal Gear Solid” game. Simply digging in its very roots, rather than going off a tangent.

    Spin off I see. Well put.

    @13: That’s just bollocks and you know it. He’s just doing the same thing Capcom is doing with DMC.

    “Well, it’s a reboot, no, wait it’s a different universe, yep, that’s it, a different Universe. Er, did we offend anybody?”

    He’s just making sure that when the game fails, you can’t blame him. Love it when developers/publishers do that. Shows how much faith they have in their product.

    The game was about Big Boss/Naked Snake, not Solid Snake.

    MGS(nake) is about Snake’s legacy, which obviously included Big Boss.

    MGR(aiden) is about Raiden’s.

    @14 They’re just waiting to see how it pans out. They’re already more than well aware of how pedantic and conceited the Metal Gear fanbase tends to be. Metal Gear Online was one of the most horrible communities I’ve ever seen in an online game.

    @15: So how come the Metal Gear Titles had no SOLID in them, although they were about Solid Snake? :(

    You gotta tell me about your MGO experience though. Sounds interesting.

    LEAVE SOLID SNAKE ALONE. He has suffered enough and saved the world enough times too. Leave Solid Snake alone. MGS mythology can be used as an Star Wars series but the main story ended 4 years ago. So leave Solid Snake alone… unless it’s a game that tells the stories of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake together.

    @16 Heh.

    @17 You have to remember that the franchise took an almost decade long break between Metal Gear 2 and Metal Gear Solid. After such a long time away, one can only assume they decide that calling it “Metal Gear 3″ would have been pointless, especially considering the series was mostly unknown in the west at that point.

    After MGS1 was such a stellar success, they obviously figured it would make sense to stick with the name. They all make up part of the same story, and they all connect together.

    MGO? The few times I played it the attitudes of players just tended to suck. I’ve heard plenty of horror stories from other people too. They’re just downright unpleasant and snotty.

    @17

    The Metal Gear titles were 2D, thus when they made the jump to better consoles, they added “Solid” to the title to represent the fact that they were now using 3D models and shapes.

    I’d actually argue that Konami has been far more consistent with their press over Rising, than Capcom with DmC. Konami has stood by it as a spin-off and has stated that MGS5 will be traditional. In this sense, fans don’t need to worry. Whereas with Capcom, it’s all dependent on sales, and you know they’ll either axe the reboot or the original series.

    @19: I’m just teasing ya. Still think it’s a lame excuse.

    @20: “The Metal Gear titles were 2D, thus when they made the jump to better consoles, they added “Solid” to the title to represent the fact that they were now using 3D models and shapes.”

    Really? You really, really think that’s the reason?

    #22 2 years ago
  23. Ireland Michael

    @22, Yeah, @20 is partly right. Kojima has gone on record a few times stating that the choice of the word Solid had to do with the jump to polygons and 3D graphics. Obviously there’s more to it than just that, but what @20 said is completely true.

  24. YoungZer0

    @23: Wow, that’s kind of stupid too. But oh well. My love for the series is kind of dying out anyway. Bought the HD Collection a month ago and can’t get myself to finish Peace Walker. Funny, how with age, i can’t stomach the amount of bullshit the franchise always needs to have.

    I mean Big Boss is in a warzone, sitting and talking some emo crap with a woman he just met, while you – the player – have the choice to x-ray her clothes away. Too much fanservice and not enough focus.

    At this point, i’m actually more excited for Revengeance than MGS5. While i didn’t like platinumgames previous works and i bet, they will fail miserably with the story (not that there is much you can fuck up after watching the horrible, horrible ending of MGS4), at least we will have less cutscenes (therefore less bullshit) and more gameplay.

    I just hope it has a more serious tone, less teeny-drama and none of the Japanese naivety i’ve grown to hate.

    Can’t wait for yet another 20 hours of babbling with some attempts at stealth in between which includes pressing a button to change camo or using a box to hide in, artificial intelligence as good as none and overly dramatic voiceovers, as well as a traditionally heart breaking ending.

    @25: And nanomachines. Don’t forget those.

    And back in 2008 i was thinking mgs4 would be the best game of all time and the last game i ever play, lol. I hope the next mgs5 is about big boss and the lead up and incuding his fight with solid.

    Yeah, that sounds like every online gamer ever.

    Why does this rustle your jimmies? Lots of companies do this to show off their innovations to their franchise which is why so many games from the Super Nintendo era start with “Super”.
