By Brenna Hillier, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 02:19 GMT

Religion is back in the new Civilization V expansion, Gods & Kings. This developer diary explains how the new mechanics integrate with the core game and deliver a whole new world of ways to conquer the globe.

The expansion doesn’t just rehash mechanics from Civilization IV and earlier. Players will found and spread the worship of customised religions. There are two new types of city state, nine new civilisations and wonders, three scenarios, and dozens of new units and buildings. Combat on land and sea has ben overhauled, as have diplomacy and espionage.

Gods & Kings drops on June 19 in the US and June 22 elsewhere.
