Yoshida: Wii and Wii U stand outside generational cycles
Sony Worldwise Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida thinks of Nintendo’s recent consoles as a separate market to that dominated by PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

“Personally, I have always thought Wii was in a generation of its own. I always thought PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are in the same generation, but Wii was not the same,” Yoshida said in an interview with Eurogamer.
“To me, the industry was growing really fast when those three platforms came up because the focus is so different. The PS3 and the 360 were the closest in terms of high definition and networked services. But Wii carved out a large niche to itself. To me, it was like two generations going at the same time.”
It doesn’t sound like Yoshida expects the Wii U to join in the current generation – or kick off the next one, either.
“Wii U is the next generation of Wii. That I understand. To me, it’s its own generation,” he said,
Asked whether the Wii U would be a competitor to next-generation PlayStation hardware, Yoshida politely evaded the question; Sony is yet to confirm the existence of a new console.

@3,
Wii was an excellent innovation for getting that one time jackpot of casual gamers on board, at the cost of alienating everyone else. I dont see a reason why a owner of either of the 3 consoles (ps3, 360, wii) would make the jump to wii u when true next-gen consoles are just 1 year away (ps3 and 360 owners) and all motion games are available on wii for casual gamers. Because of wii, ninty will lose majority of both types of gamers.

Nintendo keeps same games over and over, they haven’t matured with gamers.

This way of thinking might be logical if the Wii U wasn’t already trying to enter the same market of gamers the 360&PS3 are currently holding. A console outside a generation cycle with games inside that cycle does not really work, imho. They are already trying to get some percentage of the core market with Mass Effect 3 for Wii U. If they really ment it, they would focus on special new IPs and projects that made the Wii a success in casual market share. Judging by the presentation of games at E3 I am not really sure what they are focusing on right now.

Just a reminder that people that start as casual, or not ot use this word, say like a “fun hobby”, then within time, they evolve to become more akin to an avid gamer, thats they way it always go and not only in videogames, but with everything in life, therefore one can asume the casuals in wii, will be more avid gamers with the WiiU, and also will keep atrackting firts time players as avid gamers as well, pretty simple.

Astaroth I would disagree with you that Nintendo is trying enter the same demographic space as MS and Sony. I think PRing is a lot like politicing. Sometimes you shake hands, kiss babies, and tell people what they want to hear.
Sure, at a dedicated “hardcore” gaming show Nintendo is going to tell people that they have a healthy line up of core games. And that they will making games squarley aimed at them(the audiance).
Just like a politician would tell labor workers that fair pay, hours, and health benifits are his/her top priotey when speaking at a union hall meeting.
Tell the people what they wanna hear. That is kind of what PR does.
I don’t think Nintendo is out right lying about having some core games. And I think that WiiU will have more 3rd party core games, look at Ass Cred, Blops II, Darksiders II, Batman, and more that are coming to WiiU for examples. But.
But.
Nintendo isn’t going to just stop being Nintendo. They are going to continue to do what works for them.
Sony brought out the Move, and MS Kinect. Both were attempts to woo the nontraditional market. But neither company stoped doing the games that work for them either.
Same type of thing.

You forgot one thing, tendency to gain new habits decrease with age. I think there was a survey that one-forth of US households have a wii, and many people who played them were soccer moms and grannies. Younger people who started with wii may go with wiiu but that is also not always true. Many ninty games are for kids, so some people skip ninty platform for that reason too.
“also will keep attacking first time players and avid gamers as well, pretty simple”
Actually not that simple. wiiu will offer same things (graphics , specs) as ps3 and 360 . So first time players who are not mario fans will probably buy 360 (in us) or ps3 (eu and japan) because their friends play on them. Avid gamers (again leaving aside people waiting to play next mario, zelda and people who own all consoles) will probably wait for what sony and ms offers in next-gen. So again, not as simple.

Nintedo tittles are torwards any kind of people from kids, from adults, from old people, thats their magic, and this will also happen to the wiiU , the same thing is happening again with the 3ds as we speak.

It will not it will be a little more powerfull hence the 1080p, therefore it will be like a dreamcast it will be something between two gerenations, and the difference will be the same as big as with the dreamcast and ps2, which means not the same as this gen.

Correct your details first.

Also for your info, god of war 3, a ps3 title from 2010, runs at 1080p.

“Same thing” only started with wii, before that they were hammered by sony in 1990s and early 2000s, but thats inconsequential. No company shines forever.

I’m waiting for the Ninty marketing machine to crank it up. So far theirs been no real direction for the WiiU, no real target audience as it were.

I can’t see the wii u doing anywhere near as good as wii in sales. The wii had a cheap initial price, and offered something unique or different from other consoles, the whole wii mote and what it showed off,( so far much more generally appealing than the wii u controller) along with the wii fit and sports, hit the casual market head on, along with the hardcore nintendo fans coming off the gamecube. However the wii u wont have the same effect i believe. I think alot of people who bought the wii expecting a more traditional nintendo system or something like last gen will switch to other systems. The hardcore fans will most likely buy the wii u , however i thing the rest of the casual market that bought into the wii sports and fit hype, wont move on to the wii u, because they already got what they need with that system.
The problem now for nintendo is that because alot of that hardcore gaming appeal has been lost to xbox 360 and ps3, the only way they can remain on top is if they have that Casual fan base and sell a shitload of wii U. But i don’t see that happening. So there is a chance that nitendo might get screwed hard, because if the system doesnt sell well, how then will they compete against xbox and playstation when they will own the hardcore market. Nintendo will then have to make a console thats is up there or greater than next gen xbox /ps3 and win back all those multiplat companies and try to gain that crowd back. The longer nintendo tries to stay on the safe side, i think will hurt them later on.
