Sony on going first next-gen: “It’s about being the best”

Wednesday, 6 June 2012 11:44 GMT By Johnny Cullen

It’s not about going first in the next-gen cycle, according to SCEA boss Jack Tretton, but rather just to be “the best”.

VG247′s previously been told that Sony has been aiming for a next-gen launch ahead of Microsoft. But the Sony US boss said it’s not about being first.

“We’ve never been first. We’ve never been cheapest. It’s about being the best,” Tretton told Geoff Keighley in a GTTV interview.

“If you can build a better machine and it’s going to come out a little bit later, that’s better than rushing something to market that’s going to run out of gas for the long term.

“In a perfect world you want the best machine that ships first that’s cheapest. But the number one goal is to be the best machine and that’s what we’re always focused on.”

When asked on the status of supposed PS3 exclusive Agent from Rockstar, a game Tretton announced at E3 three years ago, quote of the show emerged.

“You couldn’t have said it better when you said Agent from Rockstar. I work for Sony Computer Entertainment. The second I start working for Rockstar, I’ll have some definitive information for you on Agent.”

Good work, Jack. Catch up on Sony at E3 here.

Makes a lot of sense. MS launched weaker 360 a year earlier and right now nothing on 360 graphically comes even close to PS3 exclusives (and multiplatform finally evened out).
But whole year is too big of advantage.

i can still see some potential for a year, maybe even 2 for the ps3. i really do. as much as i liked my 360…it feels old and dated now, slim and dashboard and kinect are trying their best to cover that with multiple layers of make up…still fall/ winter 2013 is a must for the next ms console imho. overdue already.

I like Tretton, he has said some things in the past that have dumbfounded me but with regards to him there is more positive than negative.

I think his interview with Geoff Keighley, he made a great point in saying Sony knew getting third party exclusives this generation was more difficult as costs for developing games go up so they invested more in first party studios which I think will really benefit them in the years to come.

  22. TheBlackHole

Back on topic… there’s a very good argument to suggest that one of the main reasons MS has been able to catch/surpass Sony’s market share this gen is precisely because it was out 12 months earlier. Also, as one user stated above, it’s taken a LONG time for multiplat releases to reach parity across systems.

I think Sony would do well not to make the same mistakes again.

Yeah, cause it is much better to play Unreal tournament and Tribes bastard child that is in 720p after 6 years (!) finally (!) with green static jungles (that are basically walls aka corridor shooter) + zero mechanics for noobs that can’t shoot shit. Well, at least there are pink gay space marines.

  26. Gekidami

    @22
I dont really think Sony care much that MS has a bigger L2D number to show, in the end they’re probably more bothered about sales since their console actually came out, and globally Sony have managed to outsell the 360 since. Enough to render a 6 million gap (the 360′s sales before the PS3 came out) into a 2 million one.

The multiplat parity (or lack thereof) was mainly because it was fucking hard to make stuff on PS3, so devs made them on 360 and ported them (poorly). I’d assume the same would have happened if the PS3 came out first, except the first PS3 games would have been a lot more stable up in till devs got their hands on the easier to use 360.

Last time MS *needed* to be first, this time – not so much. They’ve built up a good base now.

On the whole which is better? Better is very much a perspective thing, what do you value. What games do you enjoy? On a technical level better is only really comparable with multi-platform releases and the time it has taken to get to the current situation is telling. The PS3 may have some theoretical advantages, but if it can only demonstrate those in exclusive title built around those advantages then it doesn’t matter so much does it?

Only games like Uncharted, Killzone and The last of us show the true power of PS3 and i haven’t seen anything on 360 that is exactly like that. But as for multiplatform, for a long time 360 was better in this and i still believe it is with some games. And Halo 4 says hi, damn impressive for this old hardware. Jack Tretton says its about being the best, well you certainly weren’t with PS3, that’s for sure.

    quote
Native resolution for the game remains as per the alpha and beta code we previously analysed – 1152×720, with just a mild horizontal scaling up to 1280 pixels wide that is extremely difficult to detect by eye in most circumstances.

Erthazus, you have zero authority to make statements like those when you ‘re yet to play the aforementioned video game.

Correction The Last of Us, GoW3,Uncharted, Killzone, Infamous, Heavy rain, and now Beyond.lol I personally hope 3rd party devs start taking notes from Sony’s tactics. I would love to see an AC game or anything else follow these design patterns. Like in dead space 2 how you can tell they took notes from Uncharted. Heck I think they even said that in a dev diary before.

  38. daytripper

@26 True however with multiplats I think with some gamers especially those who own more than console it could come down to what you prefer playing on more, which for me at the moment is the Xbox, for the controller, Live and so forth. That could easily change next generation, it’s all about what I prefer to use from a design outlook and controller feel, it could be Sony next gen or it could again be Microsoft.

I do think they have done well to catch up (Sony) considering the awful launch period and for me they have the better 1st party investment which I think as games cost even more to develop next generation could see a big pay off for them in terms of enticing games only available on their platform. They cannot fuck up the PS4 launch like the PS3 launch surely?

Five years ago the internet’s armchair experts were assuring us that the PS3 would flop, Blu-ray would flop, and the console would be a distant third at the end of the gen. Probably even the last PlayStation, they mused. Pounded into the dust by the 360.

But just like that infamous Champions League final when half the Liverpool fans left before the final whistle, you’ll not find many who will admit to it today.

Errr. No, just no. You clearly no nothing about this. They would have all have to leave at half time, not before the final whistle. Liverpool started the comeback on 54′ and were level within 6′ of that.

  47. ManuOtaku

#43 not only losing a huge market share, which if you look globaly is almost 50%, but also going for first to last place and it is fighting for the second position, not good at all, of course it was not their doom like many predicted, but it wasnt a success either, perhaps a flop would be a better term under the circumstances, because the other two main competitors did exactly the opposite, they had growth in market share and they are on top of them, globally speaking.

Thats why i dont understand the things he did said, these were their two most key faults this gen, they came later so they gave the direct competiton a head start, and the price point for being a more powerfull machine, with a very difficult tech, that was done that way maybe to be more powerfull, therefore he is saying they will do it again with their next machine, i dont think so, especially for the vita situation and their overall business situation.

Ps3 is still first place. It has the best exclusives, you just can’t put the wii on ps3′s level. And the ps3 has averaged more sales than xbox 360, cause of the 1 year head start. Ps3 is still the more popular brand, only held back buy the huge price difference between the two, , due to blu ray hiccups, and cell processor costs. Ps3 would have sold millions more had everything worked smoothly from the beginning instead of having to compete with a much cheaper xbox. The difference with next gen is that there won’t be a big gap in release dates and won’t have the same launch price, because of development costs being much cheaper.

  68. manamana

I love how Sony is rolling up impressive games towards the end of its lifecycle. But Microsoft had indeed the better position this gen by launching first, so most third party developers started their gamedevelopement and engines for the Microsoft platform, didn’t they?!

Can we stop talking about the what if’s of Sony? It’s just not progressive at all. We can talk about all the what if’s of all 3 consoles but in the end where here and now.

Sony is delivering phenomenal game’s late in it’s shelf life. They are still showing of that there is plenty of life left in the system for a good 3-4 years. Granted that 3rd party developers are on board.

I think the number one to really think about is what will usher us into the next gen? The same ole stuff from the start of this gen. Or, the things this gen has come to differentiate itself from others at.

I want to see 3rd party games more dynamic like how the last of us is showing. I want to see more intensity being groomed into games going into next gen. That way when we have the technology to boost even more solid performance we can see amazingly in-depth and beautiful games.

We can go on dissing the companies or we can just wallow in the awesomeness of gaming where we are and will go.

A debate like this could go on for years.

No, not the one from Jack about bringing the best hardware to market – price be damned, that too has legs.

But instead the one in the threads, amazing how many MS fans are are experts on Sony. And vica versa. DaMan, calling it like it is man, your trolling. Plan as. You have been doing it for a while now and it is getting worse. You take great joy is argueing(not chating or descusing) just outright agruing with people that like something you don’t. And not just one or two posts. You go on and on about it, throwing hooks, hoping to snag something, someone so you can keep going.

And Gek? Man don’t jump on that hook everytime he casts it. Ignore him.

But in the end, oh well. Arguing is prolly the biggest reason some folks come to web sites like this one. the problem I have with it is that it derails thread after thread. And to tell the truth most people don’t care about you guys, or me, or any other posters personality. They just want to read the articles, and sometimes engage others and read others thoughts on the subject at hand.

Like for example, on the actual article, I think Jack is a little off. I think there needs to be a better balance between price point and quality. I think Sonys recent systems have been tech wonders, but I think high prices have held them back. Not held them back from making great games, but the price keeps those games out of gamers hands.

Not so much with PS3 today, but when it launched. And if a system does burst out the gate at launch and sell alot of units, pubs won’t see the value of making that system a priority. Clealry the Vita risks that, esp when the 3DS sells so well.

I hope Sony would learn a bit from the past gen and try to strike a better balance between hardware tech and price point. Looking at almost any generation of hardware, we can see that it isn’t the best tech that sells the most units.

Agree or not, like it or not, that is what these threads are for. Decusion on the topics at hand. Not attacking peoples character. Not chasing them article to article. Not being a shit just for the sake of it.

Some of you guys are really something.

Sorry Gazdooks,ps3 is ahead of xbox360 in sales lead. You have to take in consideration launch date! ps3 is the best console. The best exclusives and the most recognised/popular worldwide. Only ps3 can sell that many units being 1 year late to the party and being that expensive. There is no way xbox or nintendo can do what sony did in that position. By the time this gen ends, ps3 owners can be pleased knowing they got the best of the bunch and every cent worth it. Come next Gen, you can expect ps4 to reign. And wii u cannot be in the same class as ps4 or xbox^3, because its gonna be atleast 150 cheaper than both consoles.

Who gives a fuck? There are things I dislike about both companies & both consoles but it doesn’t matter either way so stop acting as if it does.

Back to article, I really do hope Sony take a much more open approach to next gen, proprietary shit like the Vita’s memory cards are real deal breakers. It would not have been as big of an issue if they included at least 16GB of built in storage, then perhaps people would not consider it overpriced.

    #87 3 years ago
  88. Christopher Jack

@87, It is subjective which metrics you use & if they are even considered a standard. For example, the PS3 has sold less consoles to date, but it has sold more during the same period since their respected launch, does it matter to us? No, so why debate it? No comparisons had even been made until you started.

    #88 3 years ago
  89. gomersoul

I am really hoping Sony do take their time with the next console and get it spot on next gen. They had a shaky start but the ps3 has provided the best quality gaming console this gen hands down. I bought one on launch day for £450 and its been worth every penny. We would all like things a bit cheaper but I’m not the sort that wants to sacrifice quality to achieve that…

“In a perfect world you want the best machine that ships first that’s cheapest.”

This is what Sony NEEDS to be striving for Jacky boy. Why does it sound like you’re dismissing this fact like it wont happen? An expensive machine isn’t a deal breaker for me, but at least have the best piece of tech that ships first! If the PS3 came out before the 360 and was $100 cheaper at launch Microsoft’s game division wouldn’t exist today. Sony have all the exclusives and games I want to play, but so help me if Microsoft comes out with a next gen console first that has comparable specs to the PS4, Im jumping ship. I’m on the jonse for some next gen tech badly!

    #90 3 years ago
  91. fearmonkey

We are still having PS3 VS xbox discussions?
Seriously, who cares… Pick the console that offers more of what you want.

That being said, I hope Sony waits and sees what MS does, and then releases a more powerful console. This generation was very close performance wise, not really that much differences between them.

If MS skimps on performance, I hope Sony doesn’t.

@90, The Vita’s hardware is worth MUCH more than the 3DS, from that perspective & so far that one alone, Sony is offering a much bigger bang for your buck.

@92, What are you on about you delusional little boy? You haven’t mentioned any ‘facts’, you’ve just driveled that Microsoft is better, from which perspectives?- I don’t know, I don’t think you even know. You’re just saying random bs without any sources backing you up. You want to be a smart arse, ok then, PROOVE your drivel correct:

“Crysis 2 and Witcher 2 are the best looking console games this gen.” Are you certain about this?

“They also happen to have gameplay unlike the pathetic excuses for games the PS3 gets.”
The PS3 has one of those games & the rest goes down to perspective & the best critics in the world would disagree with your statement.

    @92
Cherry picking aint cool, bro. You know perfectly well that the PS3 has been outselling the 360 since it came out, yet like the dishonest little fanboy you are, you’re going to shift the goalposts and expect Sony to have also sold PS3′s before the console was even out.

-The PS3 came out a year after the 360.
-Since its release, its been selling better than the 360 nearly every year globally.
-The 360 sold 6 million before the PS3 was released, that gap is now at 2 million.

These are the actual facts, the ones you want to ignore because they dont suit your delusion.

And please, cut the crap about not hating Sony and just sticking to the facts. You arent fooling anyone.

    Case in point:
“They also happen to have gameplay unlike the pathetic excuses for games the PS3 gets.”
    lol

    #97 3 years ago

Yes yes you keep pulling the PS3′s one favourable metric. Try last gen vs current gen market share for another example of how well the PS3 has fared.

@98, No they’re not, no one is ‘free’ to do anything, every action has a reaction. Any whos, without going into a physics lecture, I’ll just say that people have been banned on this site for ‘criticizing’. Perhaps you are the one who should grow a pair & learn to live with the fact that people choose to use a Sony branded plastic box to play their games on, your bitching isn’t going to change that, it’s only going to annoy a few people & if that’s your intention, then I think it’s about time that you grow up, or at least take your shit over with you to 4chan where the rest of the trolls thrive upon. It’s not that fact that you’re criticizing Sony, what annoys people are your bias intentions & the way you go about it, acting all innocent. I’ve got my own problems with Sony, Microsoft & Nintendo but I don’t skip past the article after only reading a headline to bitch about it.

    #99 3 years ago
  100. Gekidami

    @98
I thought they were third by every metric? Nice of you to admit that in fact isnt the case.

And actual console sales figures is a pretty important metric, just sayin’. You seem to be basing most of your argument on that very fact, howbeit in a totally dishonest way.

So anyway, now that the actual console sales figures have been blown away, you move onto market share Vs. last gen. Yet to my knowledge none of the current gen consoles have managed to sell more than the PS2, i dont think any of them are even close or ever will at this point (Wii was just under 100 million lacking the extra 50 million, but now Nintendo has dropped the system, the people who buy it will no doubt do the same).

…So what exactly is your point here? that Sony didnt dominate the market, therefore they failed? Why should Sony have to live up to a higher standard than anyone else? Because it gives you ammunition for your hate rampage? Oh, right.
