Watch Dogs announced as new IP from Ubisoft

Tuesday, 5 June 2012 00:09 GMT By Stephany Nunneley

Yves Guillemot took the stage at Ubis’s E3 press event to announce the new IP Watch Dogs, which the third-person shooter in the works at Ubisoft Montreal for the last two years.

It takes place in the summer of 2003, where during a blackout in New York a disgusted employee unleashed a virus on the city.

Because of this, the city is now controlled by a computer controlled by a major corporation. The computer knows all your actions, thoughts, etc and links everything you do to the system. All data is interconnected.

Players can control an entire surveillance system in the game, and use the computer system as a weapon once hacked.

The E3 trailer and the stage demo are posted below. There are three screens too.

Its called Watch Dogs I think, bit confusing.

Pretty damn impressed to be honest but I have no idea how to make that into an actual game.

Cover system, take downs eh. Could have been fucking amazing, only impressive now.

    #4 3 years ago
  5. Gama_888

Ubisoft just rocked E3 with that.
Maybe im just a sucker for new IP’s but i thought that looked fantastic!!

    And yeh its called Watch_Dogs.

    #5 3 years ago
  6. ItsFade

Now this right here, this is what I want from E3. Completely unexpected and fucking awesome. Game looks great.

    #6 3 years ago
  7. Maxie1992

Best game so far. Man, all those gameplay capabilities. It was Assassins Creed mixed with Splinter Cell shooter mechanics and Farcry enviromental control.

And those graphics and scale……mind boggling.
    Damn Ubisoft,you struck gold.

(p.s. Were was Rainbow Six:Patriots, if you had that one this easily was the best conference)

I was hoping it was called “Turn Out the Light” I think that would have been a cooler name.

But yeah, that was pretty cool. Gonna be keeping an eye on this. We desperately need new IPs in the market right now.

This is exactly what I’m talking about!
to see something NEW and UNIQUE in an open world game!

not like Sleeping Dogs that plays exactly like other open world games!
although I still don’t have the right to bash and judge it like that, it’s ok/fine for games to play like other games if they offer a different theme.

like Dante Inferno plays like God of War but has a Christian religion theme that makes it feel different.
Which is what Sleeping Dogs is doing.

but i’m so glad for this game man. Watch Dogs…AMAZING!

It didn’t make sense, nothing made sense. Until the guy started hacking, then the game felt new, cool and unique.

As shit as the presentation was Ubisoft EASILY had the best games. This is the sort of thing we should bloody expect not crap like crysis 3

  21. Lightmanone

Okay, Seriously. The girl who wrote this article was all wrong.

    First, as #4 stated, it’s Called “Watch_Dogs”
second: ctOS was introduced because an employee hacked the city main electrical grid, back in 2003, unleashed a virus that, in consequence, blacked out the city.

You can hack into ctOS, and control the city; hack phones, control lights, blackout parts of the city, traffic lights, subway. Everything.

The mission however isn’t really clear here.

But really, before you write an article, get your facts first, okay?

    And one more thing:
THIS WAS AWESOME! I so wanna play this game, tomorrow.. but that probably won’t happen haha.

    #21 3 years ago
  22. Maxie1992

I got the same impression after the demo. The ligthing and water effects almost came straight out of that “Samaritan” demo from Epic Games from GDC 2011.

    #22 3 years ago
  23. Gama_888

@4 that was in game i think, im sure it kept panning to the guy playing it with his controller.

This is what E3 Is about, brand new exciting games that no-one was expecting.

NOTTTT having stupid celebrities on stage doing shit no-one cares about.

While i didnt mind having that girl from friends presenting this one,she was cool, had a nice bit of bant going with that weird guy aswell.
Ea put on a great show overall, Lotsa stuff exploding, Good new footage for some stuff.

Then you have M$ with people flailing their arms around for an hour and a live performance from Usher, Really??

    Atm im saying

  24. lexph3re

You guys surprised Epic full of ish?lol come on you know they just like to design with the highest/easiest specs in mind

    #24 3 years ago
  25. absolutezero

@16 I was mainly refering to how heavily scripted the entire video was, what happens when you do something different thats not quite what you were meant to do?

What would have happened if the guy at the start had just barged straight into the gallery? Or snuck in the back?

What would have happened if he choose to control the train instead of changing the traffic lights? So is there going to be multiple ways of carrying out tasks like it suggests or would he have faced a fail-state if he never followed the correct path?

I get the bullet-time cover shooter parts well enough but yeah.

    #25 3 years ago
  26. daytripper

This has to be PC/Next Gen surely?

(imagine if it was Wii U exclusive…I kid)

    #26 3 years ago
  27. Gama_888

    @22 WTF is your problem???
she wrote the article as it was announced so that anyone who cant watch the stream gets the news as soon as. CTOS was what i thought the game was called aswell until the showed the name at the end.

Jeez chill the fuck out there working hard!!

    #27 3 years ago
  28. manamana

Holy mother of cyberbrains! This is absolutely the greatest gameplay I have seen for a very long time. Can’t believe Ubisoft is doing it but yeah, whenever its preorder ready I’m in. Can’t fucking believe what I saw there.

    #28 3 years ago
  29. TMRNetShark

I’m supposing this is open world too? So it’s kinda of like a nerdy hacker “Live Free or Die Hard” game with GTA elements? I’m in.

    #29 3 years ago
  30. Malmer

Really nice!!! Best of E3 so far.

But that has got to be next-gen or PC-version. No console on the market can produce depth of field blurs with that quality. And the fidelity is way to high for the meager 512 MB of 360 or the split 2×256 of the PS3. I guess it will come with the new consoles next year. And it might even look better once the hardware is locked down even more.

    #30 3 years ago
  31. Moonwalker1982

Do you guys believe that this is on the current consoles? I don’t believe it for a second. It looks even better than GTA IV on PC with the iCEnhancer MOD. It looks way too good for that.

Has to be next gen, but then….next gen wasn’t gonna be at E3, but they could have been lying. I do wonder on what system its played then, to me it sure looked like a PS3 controller.

    #31 3 years ago
  32. xino

    Gama is right.

the news just got announced and she had to type it all fast to get this to you ASAP.

Not to mention all crew will not sleep tonight
    “no sleep for the wicked”:)
Sony’s conference is in another hour.

Man did you guys see the effects when he slow down time? the water dropping on ground in slow motion!?

If you check out Watch_Dawgs website, Ubisoft released 4 screenshots of the game and the graphics are dead sick!

    #32 3 years ago
  33. Phoenixblight

  35. Night Hunter

@33: To me it looked like an Xbox Controller. You could see the Y Button at the top.

My mind is fucking blown! The game looked great, the story seems really interesting, gameplay aside from the gun combat looked rather awesome. easily the most interesting thing so far.

    #35 3 years ago
  36. Gama_888

    @Xino, Thankyou :)
Kid clearly doesn’t realize this is the busiest 3/4 days of the year for gaming journalist.

Im kinda agreeing with some of the others on this one, its did look wayy to good to be this gen. Maybe the released version wont look that good, but the gameplay elements of it still looked amazing Imo.

    #36 3 years ago
  37. absolutezero

@33 It was played with a 360 pad.

So it was running on a PC basically.

Actually its not an 360 controller, it looks like a generic dev-kit thing.

  43. TMRNetShark

Not surprised at all. Even then, a nice PC is needed to run a game that good. Plus I thought Ubisoft HATED PC games? XD

    #43 3 years ago
  44. Phoenixblight

I hope they made the game with modest hardware because if its using some type of super PC than its lying to the consumer and will become a bait and switch when the game actually releases. I can care less about all the eye candy but if they can pull off all that gameplay than I am sold. Hear that Ubisoft? Keep the gameplay!

  45. xino

our wife Stephany has embedded Youtube link.

let’s all watch it again and compare it to Epic’s Samaritan demo.

    the graphics is intense!
it does MANY things Epic said UE4 can do.
    *floor light reflection
    *deep boken effect
    *reflection detail on cars
    *movie-like lightening lens flare

HAHAHAH…i’m sorry the graphics is intense.
Look inside the car when the protagonist opens the door to the car he approaches and tells the driver in panick to get out.
Just look at the details inside the car.

    #45 3 years ago

    #48 3 years ago
  49. DSB

Looks good for sure, but maybe a little overproduced. I’m kinda tired of flashy icons hovering in midair in pretty much any game these days.

What about a little mystery or immersion?

It’s also a little underwhelming that Ubisoft are once gain latching onto a trend with the whole Dexter/Watchmen schtick. Back when Dan Brown was in style we got Assassins Creed.

Not a major criticism, but it’s anything but unfamiliar.

Either way I’m sure Ubisoft are going to find a way to make PC gamers hate themselves for wanting to buy it.

    #49 3 years ago
  50. Phoenixblight

This is a next gen game they have another year to do what they can with the game and I sure there will be a way of turning off the icons especially for the PC version.

You can tell that by how the game looks overall and there is no way Ubisoft is going to be doing a PC exclusive game that is why there was little to no info about the game.

    #50 3 years ago

Fuck it, this game gets my money, the main character can walk around with the hands in his jacket. Instant win.

Not really a fan of the shooting, looks a little bit too lose. Would’ve loved to see the main character fight his way differently out of the situation.

    #54 3 years ago
  55. Phoenixblight

Thanks man. I can’t imagine the hardware we would need to run this on the PC to make it look like it does at E3. Well I am glad I don’t have to wait until I get next gen console to play this.

    #55 3 years ago
  56. xino

this is definitely a Next Gen game!
i’m watching the video again and inspecting all graphical aspect and many things CANNOT be achieve in 7th gen game, not even big engine like CryEngine 3!

also who remembers the Rainbow 6 Patriot trailer?
that game looked good but that doesn’t even look like a 7th gen title!
My guess is that it’s gonna be a 8th gen title

    #56 3 years ago
  57. Ireland Michael

@58 The game is not *that* impressive looking. I’m really not sure why everyone is going gaga over the graphics. I mean, it’s solid, but it isn’t breaking any ground.

It’s high end PC, sure, but this is not a “next gen game”. It’ll be appearing on all current hardware.

    #57 3 years ago
  58. Phoenixblight

Ubisoft already confirmed its on current gen. I thought the same thing but they are running it on PC and I would assume on newest cards by Nvidia or AMD and we don’t know the actual specs of that PC they used, it will not look like that on the console versions but as long as the gameplay is there I can care less.

    #58 3 years ago
  59. TMRNetShark

Yeah, people… this game is very possible on the current generation of consoles. There are no dynamic reflections, and there is a ton of bump mapping and excellent use of light culling.

If I didn’t know any better, I would think that this game is using the Frostbite 2 engine. XD

    #59 3 years ago
  60. xxJPRACERxx

Yeah, it’s looking good but I don’t see anything that can’t be done on current-gen. It’s looking like an enhance version of the Anvil engine.

@58: CryEngine3 can do even better than that!

Wow, really REALLY in love with this game. Also, it felt like running on PC. There’s no way a 3rd party game would look that good on PS3 and 360.

Yeah but that’s kinda a shame. look at that video, i don’t want to think of the things they have to tone down and simply remove because 360/PS3 can’t handle it anymore.

I say….start making it for the new consoles Ubi, release it as a launch title, that would be so great. I want the game to look exactly like this on new consoles…not some severely lesser game in terms of visuals. Damn…don’t they have MS and Sony’s next hardware to develop for yet then?

    @69 He’s a Wizard! Durp.

@66 Yeah, there is a link on the other page that shows that it will be coming to 360, PS3, and PC. I’ll be getting it for PC (to avoid the so called BF3 syndrome) if it doesn’t have DRM… if it does… I’ll suck it up and get the PS3 version.
