UE4 platforms “beyond PC” TBA, UE3 supports Wii U

Tuesday, 29th May 2012 10:46 GMT By Johnny Cullen

Geoff Keighley has said in a tweet Unreal Engine 4 won’t be compatible with Wii U, referring to a GDC comment from Epic CEO Mike Capps.

“No, at GDC Mike Capps said Wii U will be Unreal Engine 3,” he said when asked about it by a user.

A representative for Epic told VG247 it hasn’t confirmed UE4-supported platforms “beyond PC,” but that UE3 “does support Wii U.”

Keighley has been working on a GTTV-related special based on UE4 for E3 next week, having said yesterday in a Reddit AMA. He recently filmed interviews with Capps, Tim Sweeney and Cliff Bleszinski on the engine.

The first Unreal 4 blowout was held a few weeks back, ahead of its E3 showing next week.

    I don’t think UE4 will support 360 or PS3 either. Same was for UE3 that didn’t support Wii and PS2.

    @2,
    Wii U will compete with ps4 and xbox720 (whatever their name is), not ps3 and xbox 360.
    @4,
    PS2 was outdated? Little less powerful but definitely not outdated. No console will be able to reach its sales numbers anytime soon.

    #5 – Oh.

    #6 – PS2 became outdated a year after it’s release, pretty much. Sony could’ve waited and launch something along the lines of the original Xbox but they chose to sell it on software. Sadly, the thing kept holding back everything for years.

    Well in the end, PS2 owned Xbox because what matters is software.

    Maybe it wont run this Version of UE4, but if microsoft and sony wont make some changes to their respective next gen hardware, and based on the “not powerfull enough” statement made by epic a few days ago, i think they will tone down the UE4 version, to a 3.5, and maybe then the WiiU will be capable of running that, but thats just especulation at this point, or a possibility if you will.

    It may compete with them but technically it’s on par with PS3 and 360 (with more modern architecture). It’s pretty much the Wii vs 360/PS3 case though this time the new thing (Tablet controller) actually looks interesting instead of the crappy gimmick that was Wii / Waggle-mote.

    PS4 and Next Box might not run UE4 either, by the way Epic have been talking lately, and certainly won’t run all of its features. Epic should focus on supporting devs to make something a bit flashier with much less cost/effort IMO. That’s the real challenge of modern game development. Staying solvent.
